RAF Reservist and former Squadron Commander Clive Mitchell, who is stationed at RAF Lossiemouth, is taking part in this year’s Dambusters 80th anniversary ride.

59 year old Clive is rounding up a team of cyclists to ride alongside him whilst raising money for the RAF Benevolent Fund, the air force's leading welfare charity.

The Dambusters Ride pays tribute to members of the RAF's 617 Squadron, who were assembled to bomb three dams in Germany's Ruhr Valley on the night of 16-17 May 1943 as part of Operation Chastise – also known as the Dambusters raid.

The Dambusters Ride consists of two elements: a Virtual Ride over the weekend of 20-21 May 2023 and a Heritage Ride taking place in Lincolnshire, on Saturday 13 May.

Because of the Virtual Ride option, fundraisers from all over the world will be taking part in the event.

You can donate to Clive's fundraiser here https://rafbf.enthuse.com/pf/clive-mitchell-46de7

A new Fraserburgh housing development is to be named after an iconic fashion designer from the town.

The flats on the corner of Dennyduff Road and Finlayson Street will be called Bill Gibb Court.

The naming is in tribute to the former Fraserburgh Academy pupil, who went on to become one of the most influential designers in the 1960s and 70s, creating outfits for the likes of Twiggy and Bianca Jagger.

Tributes are being paid to a former Aberdeenshire Councillor, who has died.

Norman Smith represented the Mintlaw - Longside and then Central Buchan wards from 2003 to 2022.

He was a long-standing resident and businessman in Longside and served on the Community Council for a number of years, as well as being a founding member of the village's long-running gala.

The council's Chief Executive Jim Savege has described Mr Smith as a gentle giant of a man, whose calm and steady leadership will leave a huge legacy for the communities he served and for the Council.

Can you help Agnese, whose cat is missing from Peterhead

Smokey hasn't been seen since Friday 3/03/23. He is 6 years old male cat and has been chipped but isn't wearing a collar.

Smokey usually wonders around the Watson Crescent and Abernethy Road areas.

Can you please check your sheds and garages and if anyone has seen him please phone 07854797215, that would be greatly appreciated.

An 84 year old grandmother has raised more than £10,000 for a local charity by leading keep fit dance sessions.

Dot Bremner, who is partially sighted and suffers from hearing loss, raised the money for North East Sensory Services over the past five years.

The Elgin woman travels almost 100 miles a week to teach her 'dancercise' classes to over 60s and people with learning difficulties and mobility issues.

Dot only became a fitness instructor at the age of 75 when she returned to education and during Covid restrictions, she entertained people from around the world with an online series of videos filmed in her back garden.

NESS supports thousands of people with visual and hearing impairments across Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Dundee, Moray and Angus.

A charity, which supports blind and deaf people in Aberdeen, has issued a plea for volunteer drivers amid fears a current shortage is worsening problems with isolation.

North East Sensory Services (NESS) runs a series of social groups at its centre on John Street.

Members meet weekly for social activities with teas and coffees and games of scrabble, bingo and bowling.

However, the charity is struggling to find the required number of volunteers to pick up and drop off service users before and after the group meetings.

Service user Linda Reid is partially sighted and struggles to walk after having a knee operation. Linda goes to the NESS group for the over 65s on Tuesday afternoons in Aberdeen.

The 75 year old said: “I enjoy the over 65s group on a Tuesday – it’s a lifeline. We would have tea, coffee and games of scrabble."

“If it's someone birthday we would have cake too. I’m turning 76 soon and I am looking forward to cake on my birthday."

“I can’t get out anywhere. I am disabled and I’m completely reliant on people taking me out."

“If a driver is not available then we all miss out. The drivers are good fun too, sometimes they would stay for the social and join in with us before taking us home.”

NESS currently has seven volunteer drivers in Aberdeen but needs a further six.
