Kenny King remains a local legend and we hope this page has reinstated Kenny and his team as positive figures in the area with Kenny's name in particular only associated with greatness.

STAFF PROFILE

Sylvia Spence played a crucial behind-the-scenes role as the company secretary at Waves Radio, contributing to the station's success and fostering a sense of family among its staff and listeners. While her husband, the legendary Kenny King, took the spotlight on air, Sylvia worked diligently to ensure the smooth operation of the station.

Unlike her husband Kenny, who was a public figure in the world of radio, Sylvia maintained a more private life. Alongside Kenny, Sylvia dedicated over 25 years to running Waves Radio, leaving a mark on the station and its listeners.

In addition to her vital role at Waves Radio, Sylvia Spence also served as the leader of the Peterhead Relay for Life team, affectionately known as The Wavettes, which continues to this day. Under her guidance, The Wavettes tirelessly raised thousands of pounds for Cancer Research UK over the years.

Sylvia and Kenny retreated from the public eye following a failed takeover of the station with only one side of the story ever being publicly told via a local newspaper article. Perhaps one day, the other side of the story will be told so we can finally know what really happened to Kenny King and Sylvia Spence.

Despite their sudden retirement, their legacy at Waves Radio and in the community endures, with their contributions and impact still remembered and cherished by those who were touched by their presence.

PRESENTER PROFILE - RALPH MCDONALD

PRESENTER PROFILE - KEVIN MURDOCH

Bursting onto the airwaves of Waves Radio in the mid-2000s, Kevin quickly rose through the ranks, becoming an on and off figure within the station's lineup over many years.

As the host of "Country Highway," Kevin carved out a niche for himself and his show became a must-listen for fans of the genre, thanks to Kevin's extensive knowledge, sharp wit, and engaging interviews with some of the biggest stars in country music. Kevin's success in the country music scene inevitably led to rivalry among the station's country presenters.

Tragically, Kevin's return to Waves Radio was short-lived as the station met an unexpected and abrupt end in 2023. Like many others involved with the station, Kevin found himself caught up in the chaos surrounding its sudden closure, leaving behind a legacy of unforgettable moments and fond memories.

PRESENTER PROFILE - DUNCAN MCKAY

Duncan McKay's journey at Waves Radio seems to be quite remarkable. Starting as a presenter on Saturdays in 2018, he gradually expanded his role to hosting 'The Afternoon Hitmix.' Alongside his on-air duties, McKay also took the initiative to learn and develop sales skills over the years.

His dedication and skills were recognized when he eventually assumed the role of head of the Commercial Team. This promotion not only highlights his ability to adapt and learn but also his leadership qualities. Under his guidance, Waves Radio navigated through the challenges posed by the pandemic and other adversities, showcasing his resilience and strategic thinking in steering the station through difficult times.

PRESENTER PROFILE - CRAIG SCOTT

Craig seemingly joined Waves Radio whilst studying at Robert Gordons University to pursue Mechanical Engineering.

He was a keen music fan, often found at Aberdeen music venues, either performing or simply enjoying the music scene.

Listeners tuned in to "Happening Saturday" for their chance to win a CD or Waves t-shirt in the exciting competition.

Craig is still in contact with Kenny King who regards him as a "True Friend".

PRESENTER PROFILE - EOIN CHEYNE

The Enthusiastic Voice of Sports Mix who captivated audiences with his boundless enthusiasm and passion for sports. As the youngest member of Kenny King's team, Eoin quickly endeared himself to listeners with his infectious energy and professional demeanor.

When James joined Waves Radio, he found his niche as a presenter on "The Afternoon Hit Mix." This show, with its rotating cast of hosts over the years, benefited from James's unique style and flair, attracting a dedicated audience of music lovers and afternoon commuters.

He became a regular fixture of the station during Kenny King's final years of running Waves Radio and in 2023 when Waves Radio reportedly faced financial difficulties and ultimately ceased operations local rumours point to all staff members having quietly exited the station as it closed its doors for the final time with no official announcement ever being made.

PRESENTER PROFILE - BRIAN EASSON

After displaying a keen interest in Waves Radio, Brian was offered the opportunity to contribute during Peterhead Scottish Week when the studio relocated to new premises on Broad Street in 1995.

Since then, he has become an integral part of the team, reflecting that he must have made a positive impression.

Born towards the end of the 1950s, Brian didn't initially gravitate towards 1960s music. However, due to his older brother's influence, he found himself tuning in to Radio Luxembourg and the Pirates, eventually developing a deep appreciation for them. He fondly reminisces about the 1970s, often triggered by a particular song he hears or plays.

In addition to his radio endeavors, Brian served as a Fire Brigade Officer.

Norman's involvement with Waves Radio has been sporadic over the years, as he balances his responsibilities as a postman with his passion for radio. While he may not have held the spotlight like some of his colleagues, Norman made some contributions to various shows.

Norman appears to no longer be involved with the Radio Industry, having not been heard for many years.

PRESENTER PROFILE - GLENN MOIR

Over the years, Glenn made significant contributions to Waves Radio, both behind the scenes as the Local News & Sport editor and in front of the mic as a versatile presenter. With a career spanning from the early 2000s, Glenn has become a familiar voice in the community, known for his insightful reporting and engaging broadcasting style.

Glenn was instrumental in shaping the station's news and sports coverage. Outside of his journalistic pursuits, Glenn Moir is known for his love of sports, particularly football.

Glenn along with his colleagues have remained out of the industry after leaving the station in early 2023 due to financial difficulties and is surely destined for bigger and better opportunities in his future endeavours, away from local radio.

According to Companies House, the station had been struggling to turn a profit, presumably due to a lack of Advertising particularly from 2020 onwards due to the Coronavirus pandemic which saw station owner Kenny King launching a Save our Station appeal which kept it going by raising thousands of pounds, a remarkable effort by us listeners and was a sure sign of Kenny's respected status in the community alongside his team who all played an important role keeping older people company during Lockdowns.

PRESENTER PROFILE - MARTYN SMITH

Martyn Smith hosted the "Afternoon Hit Mix" Monday through Friday, from 2 pm to 6 pm. Listeners tuned in after the 2 pm news for a blend of current and timeless hits to carry them through the remainder of the workday. They stayed updated with local news, sports updates, weather forecasts, and community events. Plus, Martyn kept them informed about any road issues in the North East as they commuted home.

Now, Martyn Smith continues his radio journey at Original 106 in Aberdeen.

PRESENTER PROFILE - IAIN SMALL

Iain initially joined the Gospel Show on Waves Radio, occasionally sitting in on Sunday evenings shortly after the station's launch. In September 1998, a reorganization of the North East Nightshift allowed him to secure a regular slot. Additionally, Iain has been an early riser, hosting the Breakfast Show on Saturday and Sunday mornings from 6:00 am to 9:00 am, and occasionally filling in for Kenny King on the Seventies Slammer.

Being from Dundee, he holds a special place in his heart for local legends such as Danny Wilson, The Associates, Average White Band, and the remarkable Michael Marra.

PRESENTER PROFILE - IAN MCKESSOCK

Ian hosted for Waves Radio in the early days such as the "Lunch Time Show" from 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm and "Happening Sunday" from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon.

Born in Aberdeen in 1946, Ian has always resided in the North East of Scotland. His interest in broadcasting emerged early, leading him to join the Hospital Radio Service at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary in 1983.

With a background in the public transport industry in Aberdeen, Ian's broadcasting career gained momentum after retiring, as he joined Waves Radio in October 2000..

PRESENTER PROFILE - RITCHIE GRANT

Ritchie joined the Waves Radio team when the station transitioned to full-time operations in December 1997. Initially serving as a stand-in presenter, he quickly carved out his own space with a dedicated program on Friday nights. From selling sausages to spinning songs, he balanced his role as a partner in a local butcher shop.

Ritchie expanded his love of Radio and was involved with Northsound and Original 106. It's not been reported why he left the Aberdeen stations but Ritchie continued to be involved on and off with Waves Radio.

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, a potential sale of Waves Radio in Peterhead to a local consortium believed to have included Graham Barron (Ritchie Grant) had fallen through, as announced by the station on a Facebook statement: “A potential sale of Waves Radio has failed to be completed and, consequently, the station remains under the present ownership, therefore reverting to its current and classic hits format.”

On quiet Sunday evenings, as the sun dipped below the horizon, Waves Radio came alive with the soul-stirring sounds of the Christian Gospel Show. This cherished program, airing from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, was a beacon of faith and inspiration for listeners across the airwaves.

The story began in 1995 when Ken received a humble invitation to host a half-hour Christian Gospel Music Show on Waves AM. His dedication and passion for spreading the message of faith soon led to an expansion of the program to a full hour. With each passing week, Ken's heartfelt presentations resonated deeply with his audience, earning him a place in their hearts.

As Waves Radio transitioned to full-time broadcasting, Ken's role evolved, and he was entrusted with producing and presenting the current Gospel Show. His commitment to his craft and unwavering faith made him a pillar of strength and hope in the community.

Despite being Waves Radio's most seasoned presenter, Ken remained humble, acknowledging his limited knowledge of broadcasting technology. Yet, with the support of his friends and colleagues, he navigated the airwaves with grace and aplomb, continuing to uplift and inspire his listeners week after week.

PRESENTER PROFILE - SANDY WATT

Sandy's journey with Waves Radio traces back to its inception in 1990 when the station broadcasted from the Lido in Peterhead. Despite pursuing other ventures, Sandy made a triumphant return in December 1998.

His influence in the country music scene is undeniable, with a passion for traditional country tunes that resonates through his broadcasts. A defining moment in his career came when he received a backstage invitation to the iconic Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, courtesy of his dear friend George Hamilton IV. It was there, amidst the hallowed halls of country music, that he had the honor of conversing with the legendary Hank Snow.

Sandy's connections include a network of friends in the Irish country music scene, including luminaries like Daniel O'Donnell, Dominic Kirwan, and Jimmy Buckley. He takes great joy in sharing his vast knowledge and extensive collection of country music with his audience.

His Country Highway show was broadcast on Waves Radio twice weekly.

PRESENTER PROFILE - GORDON BATHGATE

During the 1970s, Gordon collaborated with multiple Discotheques in the North East of Scotland and played a pivotal role as a founding member of Grampian Hospital Radio in 1981. Over the subsequent decade, he hosted numerous programs and held various leadership roles, including Programme Coordinator and Vice Chairman.

Among his notable achievements was producing the station's award-winning entries for the British Telecom Awards for Hospital Broadcasting, serving as his swansong. Since then, he has lent his talents to numerous radio stations across Britain and Ireland.

His association with Waves Radio dates back to their inaugural RSL broadcasts in 1991. He later rejoined in 1998, continuing to present shows in his distinctive and cost-effective manner. It is said that his weekly bus journey to travel to Waves Radio was longer than his popular show - The 70s Slammer.

PRESENTER PROFILE - PETE WAYLON

Pete hosted "Rock Rules OK" on Saturdays from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, "Heartbeat" on Sundays from 9:00 pm to midnight, and "North East Nightshift" on Mondays and Thursdays from 9:00 pm to midnight.

He joined Waves Radio in 1995 after meeting Kenny King and conducting a voice test. Originally from Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, Pete's radio journey began during his time in the Royal Air Force.

Marleen Strachan was a familiar voice on Waves Radio, delivering local news in the days before Glenn Moir.

In July 1996, after completing her first year studying Journalism at college, Marleen reached out to Kenny King for work experience at Waves AM. This opportunity led her to read updates during Peterhead Scottish Week. Graduating with an HND in Journalism in 1997, Marleen applied for the News Editor position at Waves Radio, where she remained a valued member of the team for the early years of Waves Radio.

He was a friend to his listeners, offering words of comfort during difficult times and celebrating life's joys alongside them. Whether it was sharing personal anecdotes or dedicating songs to special occasions, Alex fostered a sense of community and connection through his radio waves, making him a cherished icon for generations to come.

Following the retirement of Kenny King, he faded from the airwaves, leaving behind a void in the radio community.

Every weekday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, Brian captivated his audience with his dynamic personality and eclectic music selection on his show "AM 2 PM." Whether it was the latest hits or classic tunes, Brian had a knack for keeping his listeners engaged and energized throughout the workday.

But Brian's dedication to his craft didn't stop there. On Saturdays, bright and early at 6:00 am, he would kick off the weekend with his lively Breakfast Show, running until 9:00 am. Despite the early hour, loyal fans eagerly tuned in to start their day with Brian's infectious energy and upbeat vibes.

Behind the microphone, Brian was a natural storyteller, sharing humorous anecdotes, weather updates and even offering sage advice to his listeners. His warm voice became a familiar comfort to many, and his genuine passion for radio shone through in every broadcast.

Brian bid farewell during a weekend broadcast, his emotions palpable as he confirmed his decision to retire and "hang up his headphones." It marked the poignant conclusion of his illustrious career in broadcasting.

PRESENTER PROFILE - THE MAIN MAN - KENNY KING

The man who initiated it all and turned the dream into reality. From organizing nine Restricted Service broadcasts to planning the full-service experience, Kenny, as he did in the early days, got the North East up and at it in the morning with the Brekky Thing. On weekends, he took a nostalgic trip back to the sixties and remembered the songs that were played on the Offshore stations of the time.

His greatest influence on his career was Johnnie Walker and his August 14th broadcast on Radio Caroline when the station went illegal due to the Marine Offences Bill in 1967. His ambition was to have Rod Stewart sing live on the "Rod on The Radio" spot on the Brekky Thing, as well as to improve Waves Radio and expand the station.

In 2021, he abruptly announced his retirement in mysterious circumstances, leaving fans and according to local rumours even employees puzzled and longing for his return. Despite countless speculations and inquiries, Kenny King has remained elusive, adding an air of mystique to his sudden departure. He is sorely missed by listeners who cherished his voice and revered him as an icon in the industry, with his absence leaving a void that has yet to be filled.
