'Vulture Prince' by Arooj Aftab hits the #4 mark in my favourite albums of the year. Its enthralling mix of both Hindustani and Western classical music, jazz, folk, ambient, and even reggae comes with an astonishing attention to detail - subtle flourishes and harmonies briefly transform delicate compositions before disappearing almost as quickly as they arrived. This is the most beautiful sounding album of 2021.

At #4 in my favourite singles of the year, Indigo De Souza's 'Kill Me' floors me every single time I hear it. Its driving indie rock sounds tortured yet somehow weirdly anthemic at the same time, a perfect match for the absolutely crushing lyrics. This is an inspired example of how powerful the genre can still be after all these years.

'Deep England' by Gazelle Twin and NYX was my album of month from March and is now The Baying of Kazak's #5 favourite album of the year. It fearlessly fuses claustrophobic, agitated electronics with unnerving “English pagan and sacred music” to accompany its lyrical evisceration of a post-Brexit UK. The result is one of the most unique and terrifying records of the year.

#6: As the musical component of a "visual album" that ended up winning a 2021 Sundance Jury Prize, 'Don't Go Tellin' Your Momma' is a lyrically thoughtful tour through Topaz Jones' earlier life experiences. Whilst the topics explored and Jones' worldview provide the record with plenty of substance, its colourful blend of funk, hip-hop, and R&B also make it one of the year's most entertaining romps, offering one irresistible highlight after another.
