Hundreds of lifesaving actions were taken by Newquay's coastal emergency services at the weekend.

Newquay Coastguard Search and Rescue team saw five shouts in just one day, including clearing more than 200 people from Whispiderry Beach back to Porth Beach on an incoming tide.

Newquay's RNLI have reported their busiest week of the year. The volunteer lifeboat crew were tasked a large number of times between Thursday and Sunday - including rescuing a paddleboarder in difficulty in a strong offshore wind close to Dane Rock and assisting those at risk of tidal cut off.

Meanwhile, the town's lifeguards performed more than 50 rescues across the weekend in what's been described as "challenging conditions" - including saving three people's lives on Friday after they were swept out to sea at Watergate Bay.

The services involved have been praised for their teamwork and professionalism.

Newquay's MP says tougher measures are on the way in a clamp down on water firms.

Alongside the other newly elected Labour MPs across Cornwall, Noah Law met with Defra Minister Emma Hardy to highlight the sewage issue along our coast.

He says planned new legislation unveiled in the King's Speech will clampdown on companies. Under the Water Special Measures Bill, they will be answerable for their performance for customers and the environment..

Consumers will also gain new powers to hold water company bosses to account through customer panels. Agreement has also been reached that vital infrastructure investment is ringfenced and can only be spent on upgrades benefiting customers and the environment.

Police chiefs have reassured the public that the ongoing civil unrest across the UK will not impact the policing operation around the Boardmasters Festival.

As the first festival-goers arrive at Watergate Bay today, the site now has an increased capacity of 58,000.

Devon and Cornwall Police Superintendent Russell Dawe said, "I don't anticipate we'll be losing any resources elsewhere in the country." He emphasised that staffing and the "policing footprint" are set as part of the wider security operation.

Police patrols will be increased in Newquay, with visible patrols at the festival sites in the coming days.

A new park and ride is being introduced for festival-goers on fields off the A3059, near the Trekenning Roundabout. Organisers state there is strictly no entry to the festival via the Porth road by car. Checkpoints at four sites will deter festival-goers from using Porth, and a strict closure will be in place for much of the event on Watergate Road.

The festival boasts a bumper line-up, starting at Watergate Bay on Friday with headliners Chase & Status. Sam Fender headlines on Saturday, and Stormzy will close the festival on Sunday.

At Fistral Beach, the World Surf League (WSL) returns, featuring the best UK and international surfers in the country’s biggest surf competition. Pro surfers will compete in shortboard and longboard categories, and the next generation of groms will battle it out in the returning Junior Open competition.

Boardmasters is finally here, and here is our guide to some of the planned road closures around town.

There's a different setup this year, with no vehicle access to the Festival site from Porth. There is a park and ride shuttle system running from the car park near Trekenning Roundabout in St Columb Major - as well as the usual bus shuttle service from the Train Station Car Park.

Meanwhile, the usual closures and restrictions are in place at Headland Road for the surf part of the festival at Fistral.

Stay tuned to Radio Newquay over the next few days as we keep you up to date with the very latest info.

Good luck everyone!

Enhanced police patrols targeting anti-social behaviour in Devon and Cornwall have led to 62 arrests over the past three months.

Since May, the Hotspot Policing programme has seen over 2,000 additional hours of foot patrols in areas like Newquay, Truro, and Plymouth, resulting in the seizure of drugs, offensive weapons, and the recovery of stolen goods.

In Newquay, newly introduced street rangers, funded by the Police and Crime Commissioner, aim to bring reassurance to local businesses. Mark Warren, the Business Improvement District Manager, welcomes this extra resource for the summer, stating, "they will be targeting anti-social behaviour and low-level crime." Commissioner Hernandez has also allocated an extra £200,000 to boost street marshal patrols, emphasising the positive impact of visible policing. PRESS PLAY to listen to our report.
