An essential take on psych-pop futurism and a must for fans of Broadcast, Sun Ra and Ennio Morricone. Establishing the band as innovators in their field, the record was declared âa masterpieceâ by The Line Of Best Fit while The Quietus asserted Vanishing Twin as âone of the most original and exciting acts of the momentâ.
This was the groupâs first LP for Fire Records, at the time of recording the bandâs evolving lineup consisted of songwriter, singer and multi-instrumentalist Cathy Lucas, drummer Valentina Magaletti, bassist Susumu Mukai, synth/guitar player Phil MFU and visual artist/film maker Elliott Arndt on flute and percussion.
The album was produced by Lucas in a number of non-standard, non-studio settings. âKRK (At Home In Strange Places)â summons up the spirit of Sun Raâs âLanquidityâ and âBroadcast And The Focus Group Investigate Witch Cults Of The Radioâ and was simply recorded on an iPhone during a live set which crackled with psychic connectivity on the Croatian island of Krk. The magical Morricone-esque lounge of âYou Are Not an Islandâ, the blissed-out Jean-Claude Vannier style arrangement of âInvisible Worldâ and burbling sci fi funk ode to a 1972 cult French animation, âPlaneĚte Sauvageâ, were all recorded in night-time sessions in an abandoned mill in Sudbury.

âRed Cloudâ, embodies the patchwork approach, written about her motherâs family in the Nebraskan prairies, named after the small town and birthplace of writer Willa Cather. Her voice ducks and dovetails, wavering to speech when she sings of being made coffee and burnt bread. The great plains she paints are barren and desolate, but fertile in her mind. Itâs the place from where her sense of identity originates; here, she cherry-picks stories from dreamlike panoramas, crafting her own false histories, the truth caught somewhere in between. Trust is the centrifuge around which themes of love, family and folklore unfurl across the album. Dust is kicked up from the red scarred earth and, with it, an inexplicable calm settles over these nine songs.
âThe imagery surrounding Nebraska has always been really vivid for me. My mom would tell me about how my grandma would ride a pony to school named Daisy. I guess it brought an awareness of how much the world has changed in such a short time, but it also really tripped me out as a kid. Weâd be watching The Wizard of Oz and I felt like Dorothy was my heritage. So much of your family narrative defines who you are, and so much of it isnât true, or you hear it wrong, or you only pick up this one part, passed down by somebody else who only picked up one part. I wanted to play with that. I had all of these images swirling around me, with me at the center, and none of the sources were reliable.â Marina Allen

This video presented an opportunity to finally let the characters make their getaway. The ârealmâ was one of my first forays into the world of AI.
