The fashion industry faces scrutiny once again as Dior and Armani are accused of exploiting migrant workers in their Italian factories.
While luxury handbags sell for thousands, the workers crafting them earn only $2 an hour.

With companies prioritising profits over people, the question arises: How can we support ethical practices in the fashion industry?

Article Credit: Meena Danishmal, Royal Holloway University student

The 2015 Scottish referendum, in which the voting age was decreased to 16, spurred a debate about whether the voting age across the UK should be lowered to 16. Many people believe that 16-year-olds should be allowed to vote since they are mature enough to be responsible for their own future. The fact that teens may drive at 16 and are regarded competent enough for other adult tasks contradicts the claim that they are immature. Furthermore, 16-year-olds can work, pay taxes, and be prosecuted with crimes like adults, demonstrating their potential to be active citizens. Reducing the voting age would help reduce young people's political alienation and boost their political involvement. Furthermore, young people are expected to obey adult regulations but have no say in their creation, creating a sense of "taxation without representation." Many young people are already involved in politics in many ways, and denying them the opportunity to vote would be hypocritical.

Article Credit: Sav Altair, Royal Holloway University student

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has been on strike since their contract with The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers ended in May. Other screenwriter unions around the world have joined the strike, which has halted production on famous shows including Stranger Things and The Handmaid's Tale. The primary cause for the strike is writers' income, which has been significantly damaged by the changing media consumption landscape. Shorter seasons and increasing competition for smaller projects have resulted in a lack of stable employment and lower compensation for authors. Furthermore, the growing importance of AI in scripting raises questions about the profession's future. In the face of AI-generated material, the WGA is fighting for fair pay and the authenticity and worth of human storytelling. The strike follows a previous one over DVD residuals in 2007-2008, and the WGA hopes for a favourable resolution to ensure that writers are treated with respect and to sustain meaningful and ethical media use.

Is the WGA striking for valid reasons? Is AI starting to become a threat to media arts?

The Online Safety Bill establishes new requirements for companies that host user-generated material and search engines, with the goal of reducing the display of dangerous search results. One source of concern is the idea to eliminate or reduce the visibility of lawful content judged "harmful to adults," which includes disinformation and misinformation. Ofcom has received definitions for these terms, including a category called "malinformation," which relates to true information transmitted with the aim to cause harm. The contradiction arises when citizen journalistic content falls under the nebulous definition of "lawful but harmful," potentially leading to censorship. Despite this, the government and Ofcom are establishing legal infrastructure that will allow them to regulate what the public sees. This jeopardises journalistic credibility and raises issues about free expression. Cases like Julian Assange's highlight the costs of disclosing the truth.

Do you ever wonder how certain leadership styles can affect employee motivation in the workforce?

This article by Meena looks at leadership styles and how they affect employee motivation. It focuses on three significant thinkers: Niccol Machiavelli, Seneca, and Fyodor Dostoevsky. It looks into each thinker's individual leadership styles, analysing their fundamental concepts, looking at real-world examples, and doing a comparative analysis. It emphasises practical aspects of leadership, such as adaptation and strategic use of authority (Machiavelli), the importance of virtues, self-improvement, and ethical behaviour (Seneca), and a knowledge of human nature and moral responsibility (Dostoevsky). Leaders can establish a complete approach to leadership that supports employee engagement and motivation by incorporating these ideas.

Do you agree/disagree these leadership approaches foster a healthy work atmosphere, employee engagement, and motivation, ultimately resulting in long-term organizational success?

Article Credit: Meena Danishmal, Royal Holloway University student

This article explores the concept of wealth redistribution as a solution to address societal inequality, examining the moral implications of different strategies. Philosophical schools of thought, such as utilitarian ethics and Rawlsian justice, offer insights into the ethical dimensions of wealth distribution. Advocates argue that wealth redistribution is a moral imperative to correct market failures and equalize opportunities, while critics contend that it intrudes upon property rights and fosters disincentives to productivity.

Meena delves into various viewpoints, discussing concerns about accurately measuring happiness, the importance of individual effort and responsibility, and potential inefficiencies in government bureaucracies. Additionally, it explores alternative approaches to economic justice, including empowering economic opportunities, Universal Basic Income, stakeholder capitalism, ethical consumerism, and global cooperation. Achieving a fair and just society requires a multi-faceted and inclusive approach that considers the unique circumstances of each community and nation while striving for shared prosperity and well-being.

Do you agree that economic justice encompasses a range of approaches beyond wealth redistribution, including empowering economic opportunities, and fostering global cooperation, as alternative strategies to address economic inequality?

In today's media landscape, characterized by an abundance of content and intense competition, capturing and maintaining audience attention has become a significant challenge. The rise of information overload, fueled by the digital age and the internet, has made it difficult for consumers to sift through the vast amount of available content. The paradox of choice further complicates the matter, as consumers can become overwhelmed and disengaged in their search for something interesting.

Online platforms' algorithms and personalisation algorithms can generate filter bubbles, limiting accessibility to various content. While navigating this competitive market, content creators must provide engaging and valuable material. Consumers can help by actively seeking out different points of view and critically digesting media. Both consumers and creators may contribute to upgrading the media landscape and finding something truly intriguing despite the noise by striving for quality and thoughtfulness.

Do you prefer the media excess on different platforms? or is it hard to find something that entices you?

West End LIVE is a highly anticipated annual event in the London Theatre scene. It serves as a platform for showcasing and promoting the current shows in the UK theatre industry, attracting thousands of fans. The event features upcoming work, classic fan favourites, and highlights the significance of theatre to the wider public. It is the largest free theatre event globally in Trafalgar Square and is organized by Westminster City Council, drawing in over 400,000 audience members each year. It is known for its long queues and lack of seating, which can be a challenge for attendees.

However, understudies often step in to relieve principal actors from the demanding schedule. The event's free entry makes it accessible to people who may not be able to afford traditional theatre tickets, providing a valuable opportunity for young people to engage with the industry. This is important because ticket prices in London theatres have been expensive, making live theatre inaccessible for many, especially young people. Despite the possible chaos of a first-come, first-served entry system, West End LIVE provides a financially accessible weekend for audiences. The event is crucial in keeping young people interested in the theatre industry and has taken on even more meaning since the pandemic, celebrating the art that was lost during the theatre shutdowns.

Should West End LIVE find another venue? or increase their event period to three days? What do you think?

In the Middle East, art and literature are vital vehicles for cultural expression and identity. The region's rich artistic past spans centuries and includes a varied range of cultures and languages. From Islamic calligraphy to Persian poetry, art and literature provide insights into the Middle Eastern people's values, beliefs, and experiences. They reflect distinct points of view, difficulties, hopes, and desires. These forms of creativity have changed and altered over time to reflect societal dynamics and to embrace new technologies.

Islamic art demonstrates aesthetic competence as well as spiritual connection, whereas literature preserves stories, traditions, and ideals. Artists and authors from the Middle East challenge stereotypes, criticise power systems, discuss social issues, and oppose societal restraints. Collaborations between art and literature promote comprehension, interchange, and appreciation.

Do you believe that art and literature have the ability to bridge gaps, transcend barriers, and create spaces for appreciation, resulting in a more inclusive and nuanced knowledge of the Middle East and its people?

Article credits: Meena Danishmal, Royal Holloway University student

The book "The Prince" by Niccol Machiavelli remains extremely influential in contemporary politics. It questions traditional moral concepts and pushes for a more practical approach to leadership, emphasising self-interest, using force, and manipulating public image. These themes are still relevant in today's political environment, when image building, strategic alliances, and the tactical application of power are widespread. However, Machiavelli's theory raises ethical difficulties because it prioritises power over moral values and can destroy trust between leaders and citizens. Leaders must closely analyse the potential repercussions and consider alternate perspectives.
Machiavelli's ideas continue to influence political debate and decision-making. From Winston Churchill to Boris Johnson, British leaders have struggled to integrate Machiavellian techniques into their government while respecting ethical standards. These leaders' examples demonstrate the complexity and quandaries that come when applying Machiavellian concepts to contemporary politics. To ensure the well-being and trust of their constituents, leaders must carefully combine pragmatic decision-making with ethical considerations. We may negotiate the problems of power while respecting moral norms and democratic goals by critically examining Machiavelli's philosophy's strengths and faults. This delicate balance could shape a political landscape that combines strategic decision-making with ethical leadership and ultimately improve society as a whole.

Do you agree or disagree with Machiavellian's beliefs and techniques? Let's hear your opinion! Click the link on our page to read, vote, and comment on this article.

WHERE IS THE NEWS NOW AND WHAT CAN IT BECOME?

Many would argue that the news has not evolved much beyond the inception of Pathe. Newsreaders sit behind desks or stand in front of screens and real life news events are reported from static locations. It is a world where it’s rare not to hear “Queen’s English” accents unless a member of the public is offering their limited input in the form of vox pops. With each emerging generation the news in its current format is rapidly becoming irrelevant, out of sync with modern times and our changing needs. Ask anyone on the street how they feel about the news and the best you may be met with is a “mehhh”. Beyond this, there is fury, a legitimate degree of mistrust, echo chambers and fake news.

We also seem to have taken it as a given that news must be depressing. In fact, sport and celebrity features are the only route by which to find anything vaguely uplifting. Unsurprisingly, younger generations are becoming indifferent to the news and have chosen to disengage with it.

This is where social media steps in. However, current platforms offer us facile connection as they try to cover too many bases, news being just one. Facebook is the most popular social media option for news but good luck wading your way through the endless shots of friend’s lunches in order to locate it. This is sub ideal.

So, what’s missing? I guess the real question is, why when the news affects us all are so few of us actually involved? Especially at a time when to do so has never been simpler. I would argue that, in fact, to do so is the inevitable solution. If we are not invited to the conversation, maybe it’s time to start our own. If we can’t trust them, maybe we can begin to trust us.
