🗣️ BLURT: OPEN CALL FOR SONIC EXPERIMENTS IN TEXT

🪅 DEADLINE 26 MARCH / LAST FEW DAYS TO APPlY

🫨 Blurt is an experimental platform supporting artists to develop text-based works for performance and live-to-air broadcast on RTM.FM. In this testing-site for testing text, TACO! invites artists to consider radio broadcast as an expanded form of publishing. We perform to publish, which is to say, to make public. And our moment of thinking is live on air!

💬 TACO! is seeking proposals for sonic experiments in text: aural encounters, vernacular enquiries, conversations, radio plays and other weird waves.

🌀 TACO! will support four artists or artist groups to develop and test work over a four-week research and development period. This will culminate in Blurt, a public performance series presented at TACO! and broadcast live on RTM.FM.

📡 Selected artists and artist groups will receive: use of studio and production space over 4 weeks; editorial, curatorial and producer input and support; access to audio tech and equipment; a production budget of £250 per project to cover expenses.

RTM Joins the global strike for Palestine today, Friday 20th October. Together with artists and other organisations we will be withdrawing our cultural output.

It’s a small gesture against a humanitarian crisis of historic proportions- but we hope by doing so we can encourage you to join us in solidarity and prompt some reflection on what is unfolding.

The Experimental Tunes and Children show explores DIY instruments! Introducing ambitious labour intensive handmade instruments to circuit bent kids toys, sound making with everyday clutter and crafting orchestras from vegetables. We are very happy to be joined by new resident on the rtm airwaves this evening at 18:00.

We’ve lost the plot, huddled euphori-dwellers think,
mud under feet, endless, rumble
But at least we can hear the wind through the grasses —

Sounds from the Outside is a monthly sonic assemblage drawing from everywhere, from me to you,
everything for everyone.

Tune in.

Tomorrow at 13:00 w/ & - an archival grime project run out of Montreal by collector and producer

The shows name draws inspiration from an era when Grime producers and MC’s would press exclusive, white-label dubplates, by spraying metal discs with acetate, and then cutting them with a diamond lathe. This was the only affordable option. Thanks to the Tottenham based cutting studio ‘Music House’, the Grime scene was able to thrive. The acetates were then distributed amongst sound systems, DJ’s, and pirate radio stations such as Rinse FM, Deja Vu FM and Heat FM. Grime was for most listeners an almost entirely non-visual genre during its formative days. This is the result of a lifetime compiling tapes and records.

Listen back to RTM w/ .

A collage of thoughts and insights on process, practice and performance from guest artists previously featured on the sound and art platform The Thames submarine.

Drawing for me is a receipt of the process of looking
The tea I drink in the morning is not inconsequential at 2 oclock in the afternoon
How do you make a sound installation that lasts a thousand years
The question why don't you answer is like a fundamental question for me all my life
Since I was younger I don't feel comfortable in the collective happiness
I would argue that all sound making to a certain extent is collage
I just can't imagine a time when it would stop for me
A lot of people don't like to revisit their work but i'm sentimental and really nostalgic

Today at 13:00! Tunes by Children w/ 👉

This episode focuses on music made and performed by children, with a consideration for selecting music that’s led and created by them as much as possible. The majority of tunes are home tape and computer recordings with sounds made with found objects, pots and pans, toys, keyboard demos, out of tune instruments, and synths. Lyrics are largely improvised or drawn out from their artwork and immediate environment. The show moves through genre bending sound collages, a 5 year olds vocoder rap to rock and hip hop expressing personal snack choices, introspective lo-fi folk, moody minimal electronica and punchy vocals from one of Columbia’s smallest cumbia singer.

SHOES 05: Mahsa Amini’s Shoes

In the wake of Jina (Mahsa) Amini’s murder at the hands of the Islamic Republic’s morality police on 16 September 2022, SHOES 05 collects sounds from across the subsequent uprising in Iran. With special guest Sanaz Zardosht, we trace rhythms of resistance within early Persian music up to today’s throat-cutting cries for “women, life, freedom”. Protesting feet intermingle with the pre-revolutionary songs our mothers sang. We gather recordings from arrested artists whose contraband songs have become anthems for the uprising. With them, we mourn for the hundreds who have lost their lives, been arrested and tortured in recent months. We listen beyond the nostalgia of pre-revolutionary Iran as it sets the foundation for this fearless generation. Following in the footsteps of their own conviction, we hear a fierce song of transformation in the hope for a future beyond state-controlled violence and oppression.

NEW RTM RESIDENT 👉

This Saturday at 18:00 we welcome The Thames Submarine to the RTM airwaves for a new monthly radio show.

The Thames Submarine began in 2020 as a platform for work that uses sound as an integral or evocative element, working across disciplines of music, art, film, sculpture, sound art and architecture. So far it has featured artists such as Ellen Fullman, Guy Sherwin, Claire Rousay, Maria Chavez, Gala Porras Kim and Athanasios Argianas amongst others and by juxtaposing work with extended informal conversation it hopes to offer new aspects on material, practice and performance.

HYPER CREW👉 This episode reflects on the desires, frustrations and ecstasies of childhood. From the trials of being small and navigating a world made for adults and the injustice of being forced to go to bed to the joy of watching your favourite morning cartoons and losing yourself on a sugar bender. Tunes will travel through pico-pop to improvised tantrum infused noisy punk, hyper jazzy cut and paste electronic pop and genre bending cheer punk.
