A new exhibition by Sohrab Hura is on view at MoMA PS1 until February 17, 2025 ✨

TItled Mother, the showing traverses the artist’s prolific 20-year career through works of photography, film, sound, drawing, painting and text — exhibiting them all together for the first time. The exhibition coincides with the release of his new book, Things Felt But Not Quite Expressed, a collection of soft pastel illustrations published by MACK in October.

Focusing on everyday moments revealing the impact of political and social forces, his multi-disciplinary approach encompasses themes of the legacy of colonial borders, the trauma of partition and the shifting ecosystem of the Indian subcontinent, as well as deeply personal reflections on family life, society and culture.

Hura will be the third Magnum photographer to take part in the Signature Drop, a time-limited release of hand-finished posters and prints, from December 3 to 6.

It’s a dog’s life 🐕

Whether in our homes, along sandy shores or on bustling streets, Magnum photographers have documented the profound connection between humans and dogs for close to a century.

A weary dog takes a rest on the side of a Parisian street in Richard Kalvar’s 1975 capture.

In a photograph from Cristina García Rodero, a woman cradles her two companions awaiting their blessing at the Fiesta San Antonio Abad in Madrid, Spain.

Ferdinando Scianna depicts a pooch perched on a scooter on a Sicily street, taken in 1988.

On assignment for The New Yorker in 2023, Paolo Pellegrin and journalist Ben Taub visited the Norwegian towns of Vardø and Kirkenes, placed a few kilometers from the Norwegian-Russian border and the strategically-sensitive Kola Peninsula. The article, titled "Russia's Espionage War in the Arctic,” examines the increasing intensity of Russia's intelligence operations in the region.

"For the past few years, civilian life in northern Norway has been under constant, low-grade attack. Russian hackers have targeted small municipalities and ports with phishing scams, ransomware, and other forms of cyber warfare, and individuals travelling as tourists have been caught photographing sensitive defense and communications infrastructure,” writes Taub.

For years, Russia has been using the Norwegian town of Kirkenes, which borders its nuclear stronghold, as a laboratory, testing intelligence operations there before replicating them across Europe.

Spanning over fifty years, Burt Glinn’s versatile practice delves into a myriad of subjects across the world, building unique visual stories around his insights into conflict, political figures, society, culture, nature, architecture and more. Throughout the 1950s and ‘60s, he photographed many well-known personalities of the era, from politicians to musicians and beyond.

In 1957, Glinn documented Queen Elizabeth II’s visit to his hometown of New York City, and later followed Robert F. Kennedy on his historic 1968 campaign trail. He also accompanied Sammy Davis Jr. from his Manhattan apartment to the recording studio and stage in 1959, creating a rare and enduring document of the entertainer.

Over the course of 14 years, Jean Gaumy photographed the fierce conditions facing the fishermen who worked on open-deck trawlers in the North Atlantic, capturing the harsh reality of life at sea. These striking black-and-white images would later be published in his book Pleine Mer (Men at Sea) in 2001, compiling work created during a series of long voyages taken between 1984 and 1998 on French and Spanish trawlers.

“Hurled when the boat dives, the steep and greasy stairs we climb become a pestle as we go over a wave,” Gaumy writes in the book. "The iron airlock. The sticky air of diesel vapors. The large linoleum imitation floor, blistered, brown and greasy. Everything flutters about. The portholes’ light is dancing on the walls and behind the thick glass, the sea runs off distorting the vision. The unpredictable gray sky devastated with spindrifts, and the ocean at the edge, full of white flurries.”

Advice for Young Artists, a new photobook from Alec Soth, comprises work created while visiting 25 undergraduate art programs across the United States, embracing the freedom of being a student. Despite its title, the book avoids traditional guidance, instead offering Soth’s unresolved reflections on art, aging and the creative process as it evolves over time.

In the book, portraits of students, candid workshop captures and still life images are accompanied by sporadic phrases written on Post-it notes nodding to clichés of the self-help genre. As a result, Advice for Young Artists serves as both a meditation on the experience of finding oneself as a young artist, as well as Soth’s own contemplations on becoming an old one.

Soth will be signing copies of the book tomorrow, November 8 from 6:30 PM, at the Magnum stand at Polycopies as part of Paris Photo Fair.

In 1957, Inge Morath produced one of her most recognizable images while on assignment for Life.com magazine, featuring a llama perched in the backseat of a car in Times Square, New York City. The llama, named Linda, was traveling from New York’s ABC studio following a television performance, and was one of several animals featured in the Life article “High-paid llama in big city.”

This darkroom guide print, featuring annotations from printer Pablo Inirio, forms part of the latest selection of Magnum darkroom prints, revealing a unique glimpse into the skill and artistry involved in the craft.

Magnum x Polaroid at Paris Photo Fair 💥

Earlier this year, Jim Goldberg, Newsha Tavakolian and Enri Canaj each created a new body of work in their home countries using a Polaroid I-2 camera. This was followed by a global open call, organized by Magnum and Polaroid, inviting emerging photographers to submit their portfolios along with a concept for an empathy-driven story.

As part of Magnum and Polaroid’s ongoing collaboration, an exhibition titled Real Life Is Not Black and White will be on view at Paris Photo from November 7–11, featuring work from the 10 open call winners alongside images by Goldberg, Tavakolian and Canaj. Enri Canaj will also lead a talk with several of the winners on November 9, delving into their projects in more detail.

Today, citizens in the United States head to the polls to vote in the country’s 60th presidential election. Magnum photographers have an 80-year history of documenting the United States' electoral landscape, from national conventions and rallies to activism and protests.

Cornell Capa's 1960 coverage of John F. Kennedy's presidential run stands as both a lasting historical document and a personal portrait of the man behind the campaign.

Susan Meiselas has documented the Democratic National Convention through the decades, from Jimmy Carter's nomination in 1976 to the present day.

Abbas photographed protests against the Vietnam War targeting the 1972 Republican National Convention, resulting in widespread arrests.

At this year’s Paris Photo Fair, Magnum Gallery presents a selection of fine prints that travel through the generations of Magnum photographers, weaving classic with contemporary and monochrome with vibrant color ✨

The 27th edition of Paris Photo sees Magnum Gallery curate a visual journey through the cooperative's vast archive, highlighting a pair of vintage prints from Herbert List. Known for his striking portraiture that combines photography with his fascination for surrealism and classicism, List’s lesser-known still life work reveals the subtlety and introspection characteristic of his oeuvre.

His 1936 depiction of an ashtray intersected by a shadow serves as a study of composition and form reduced to its fundamental elements, exploring the meeting of light, shadow and shape. In another image created two years prior, a single sardine lies in a wrapper placed on a rough surface in a multilayered observation of texture and tonality.

Visit the Magnum Gallery at Booth C02 at Paris Photo from November 7–10.

Happy Halloween 🎃

This Halloween, we trace the Magnum archive for depictions of spooky spectres and apparitions from other realms.

A series of images created by Herbert List in 1937 capture the spirit of Mount Lycabettus in Athens, Greece.

Photographed by Sergio Larrain in 1958, a menacing figure walks down a London pathway, framed by a wrought iron gate.

Susan Meiselas looks straight through the lens and beyond in an eerie self-portrait created in her 1971 Massachusetts residence.

Forty years ago today, former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by two of her bodyguards at her residence in Delhi. Gandhi was India’s first and only woman Prime Minister to date, serving three consecutive terms from 1966 to 1977 and another from 1980 until her assassination in 1984. A polarizing political figure, her tenure in office marked a period of significant change in the country’s politics and development.

Over nearly four decades, Indira Gandhi’s career was documented through the lenses of Magnum photographers. Marilyn Silverstone and Raghu Rai photographed Gandhi throughout the 1960s to 80s, both at home and during public engagements, with Rai attending her funeral in 1984. Gandhi also crossed paths with Henri Cartier-Bresson in 1947, during his photographic journey through India.

On this day 50 years ago, boxers George Foreman and Muhammad Ali stepped into the ring to battle for the world's undisputed heavyweight title, billed as The Rumble in the Jungle. The match would become one of the most iconic and culturally significant events in the sport, with Ali famously winning by knockout against Foreman in the 8th round.

Abbas was on assignment for Jeune Afrique magazine in the then-nascent Zaire, now the Democratic Republic of Congo. He followed Ali from President Mobutu’s palace to the boxing ring, documenting the events leading up to and during the historic match through his lens.

“There is no question that the Americans are vagabonds,” once said Dennis Stock. “Our highway system and size make it very attractive to ‘truck on down’". In his 1971 series, Road People, Stock documents the lives of people living and moving across America in vans, buses, makeshift mobile homes and on motorcycles.

In his image featured in the Square Print Sale, a towering dinosaur looms over a row of parked vehicles, including two RVs and a minivan, evoking the sense of playfulness and adventure that accompanies the spirit of travel.

Driven by his own curiosity, Stock created a raw, unembellished vision of a transformative era in American counterculture, bearing witness to a new generation of people seeking their own Eden on the open road.

Mark Power’s image of Journey's End, a mobile home park featured in his five-book, 12-year exploration Good Morning, America, delves beneath the surface of the impacts of climate change in the United States. While seemingly presenting a pleasant vision of a poolside scene, a closer inspection of the melted furniture and scorched palm trees reveals devastation caused by the 2017 Tubbs Fire.

“Tubbs was, at the time, the most destructive wildfire in Californian history, although it was to be superseded by Camp the following year. Tubbs raged across three counties, claiming 22 lives, but it was the city of Santa Rosa that bore the brunt of the damage, recording nine deaths and the loss of 3,000 homes,” says Power. "At Journey’s End, two elderly residents perished."

In Good Morning, America, Power contemplates the myths, realities and juxtapositions of the United States' landscape, alluding to the underlying tensions of the social and physical environments he photographs.
