With sadness and bittersweet emotion, I share this, the last public appearance of Tom Jones when he came into the Studios, in spite of his frailty, to record and commit his interpretation and performance of “The Old Actor” for JAY’s Complete Recording of THE FANTASTICKS. Fate decreed that ”The Old Actor” was to be his first role as THE FANTASTICKS burst forth into the World and his last performance in a role in the Complete Recording of THE FANTASTICKS. Thank you Tom and May you Rest in Peace.
I am so Sad and Heartbroken to hear of the Passing of Tom Jones. I have been privileged and proud to have met him and Harvey Schmidt when I recorded the Complete Recording of 110 IN THE SHADE and their final Musical ROAD SIDE. Tom (and Harvey) have always been the most supportive and lovely towards those recordings and we developed Close Friendships. I am very proud and eternally grateful that Tom deigned to record his "Old Actor" performance for JAY's Complete Recording of THE FANTASTICKS. He came into the studios even though he was very frail and gave a wonderful performance. I am in total awe of him as a Lyricists and as a performer. I am working on mixing the Complete Recording of THE FANTASTICKS and I am beyond sad that he will not get to hear his wonderful performance in this recording. Thank you and good night Sweet Prince, "May flights of Angels sing thee to thy rest". We will remember you in Light!. The Story Songs, that was once a favoured Art form of Kurt Weill (THE SAGA OF JENNY), Cole Porter (MISS OTIS REGRETS), Stephen Sondheim (THE STORY OF LUCY AND JESSIE), Stephen Schwartz (MEADOWLARK), Tom Jones/Harvey Schmidt (MELISANDE) etc., are now mostly ignored by the current composers and lyricists of Musicals.
Not so Michael Colby, the lyricist. He has devised a whole Musical Revue of his “Story Songs”, that are not only tuneful, witty, clever, interesting and profound but also unusually surprising. Here’s one of them, SINCE I FELL sung by the gorgeously funny La Donna Burns and the Girls.

However, there are some who deem it “dated” and inconsequential. On this day, to celebrate its opening on Broadway, we remember that, compared to the “entertainment” masquerading as “Musicals”, Richard Rodgers’ final Musical stands out miles above them all.
