BRIXTON ACADEMY

Amy Lamé, London’s Night Czar said: “Firstly, my heart goes out to the families and loved ones of Gaby and Rebecca and the woman who remains in a critical condition in hospital following the awful events at O2 Brixton Academy.

“I know how cherished the O2 Brixton Academy is by artists, fans and the local community and how important it is to the UK’s live music scene. I am pleased that Lambeth Council are satisfied that the O2 Brixton Academy can be safely reopened by Academy Music Group. The decision today rightly follows a detailed examination of evidence and the presentation of new plans that will ensure nothing like the tragic incident last year can ever happen again.”

The New Deal between Nigeria and UAE

An article by AA

I look forward to seeing the full details of this pact between Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates but I hope it includes ambitious proposals like this by

Ayo Akinfe

[1] Over the last 20 years of so, rich Nigerians have been flocking to Dubai in huge numbers to throw lavish parties. Even our leaders hold the weddings of their children there, while many Nigerian businesses, old school associations, community groups, etc, who could easily hold retreats in Nigeria, chose to go to Dubai for jamborees. A 30% Dubai Tax will be levied on such jamborees and used to develop the Nigerian tourist industry

[2] Emirates Airlines will take our a 25% stake in Nigeria’s planned nee national carrier

[3] Today, less than 5% of the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) revenue comes from oil. Both governments will work towards Nigeria achieving similar status by 2040

[4] Dubai has been called the shopping capital of the Middle East as it has more than 70 shopping centres, including the world's largest shopping centre, the Dubai Mall. Nigeria will look to match this by 2030

[5] Over the last 15 years, Dubai has invested massively in infrastructure like rail metros, roads, security, hotels, beaches, holiday resorts, conference centres, etc. Nigeria will seek to match this investment on a like-for-like basis

[6] Dubai attracts about 20m tourists a year. Nigeria will to match that under a joint visitors programme the two countries will sign that will offer tourists a visit to both nations for the price of one

[7] Australia has sought to develop Tasmania as a tourist paradise, away from the mainland. Dubai investors will help Nigeris develop a similar island in the Niger Delta. Maybe Opobo

[8] Under the terms of this cooperative agreement, the UAE is committed to investing at least $50bn a year in Nigerian infrastructure and the hospitality industry

[9] Dubai’s Tourist Board will take out minority stakes in Tinapa, the Obudu Cattle Ranch, the Uyo Ibom Le Meridien Golf Resort, the Apex Holiday resort in Abuja, Green House Farms & Resort House Farms and Resort Abuja and the La Campagne Tropicana Beach Resort in Lekki, Lagos

[10] UAE tourist operators will be given 90 year land leases to open holiday sites in Nigeria

STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE

PRESIDENT TINUBU SECURES LANDMARK DEAL WITH UNITED ARAB EMIRATES ACROSS SECTORS; VISA BAN ON NIGERIAN TRAVELERS IS LIFTED IMMEDIATELY

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and President of the United Arab Emirates, Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, on Monday in Abu Dhabi, have finalized a historic agreement, which has resulted in the immediate cessation of the visa ban placed on Nigerian travelers.

Furthermore, by this historic agreement, both Etihad Airlines and Emirates Airlines are to immediately resume flight schedules into and out of Nigeria, without any further delay.

As negotiated between the two Heads of State, this immediate restoration of flight activity, through these two airlines and between the two countries, does not involve any immediate payment by the Nigerian government.

In recognition of President Tinubu's economic development diplomacy drive and proposals today presented by President Tinubu to his counterpart, an agreed framework has been established, which will involve several billions of U.S. dollars worth of new investments into the Nigerian economy across multiple sectors, including defense, agriculture and others, by the investment arms of the Government of the United Arab Emirates.

Additionally, President Tinubu is pleased to have successfully negotiated a joint, new foreign exchange liquidity programme between the two Governments, which will be announced in detail in the coming weeks.

In conclusion, the President wishes to commend the UAE President, Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, for his unalloyed friendship and his determined effort to join hands with him to fully normalize and reset to excellence, the standard of relations between the two important countries.

Amy Lamé, London’s Night Czar said: “My thoughts remain with the families and loved ones of Gaby and Rebecca and the individual who remains in a critical condition in hospital following the awful events at Brixton Academy. It is essential that the venue operators, the police, the council and the community work together to understand what went wrong and ensure it cannot happen again.

“During the course of this week Lambeth councillors will hear a wide range of evidence over several days. They will weigh that evidence against the requirements of the Licensing Act 2003, and decide whether the plans put forward by the venue’s operator - Academy Music Group (AMG) – will enable the venue to be reopened safely.

The Brixton Academy is a well-loved and important live music venue for artists, fans and the local community.. Whatever the outcome of this week’s hearing, the Mayor and I are committed to working to ensure the venue can reopen safely."

Background

Licensing is a democratic process led by elected councillors. The licensing process is there to reassure audiences, artists and the community that the venue can reopen safely.

The licensing hearing will be fully transparent and streamed online.
There is a live police investigation into the incident so some evidence will not be shared in public as it could prejudice any future criminal prosecution.

If the council choose not to grant the licence, it does not mean the end of Brixton Academy. Further work would be needed by all parties to refine the plans or find a new operator for the venue

Newsb.

Mrs Diezani Alison Madueke, a former Nigerian Minister of Petroleum, has been charged with bribery offences following an investigation by National Crime Agency of the British government.

The 63 year old who also served as president of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries—OPEC is suspected by NCA to have accepted bribes during her time as Minister in exchange for awarding multi-million pound oil and gas contracts.

The Delta born flamboyant lady is alleged to have benefitted from at least £100,000 in cash, chauffeur driven cars, flights on private jets, luxury holidays for her family, and the use of multiple London properties.

Her charges also detail financial rewards including furniture, renovation work and staff for the properties, payment of private school fees, and gifts from high-end designer shops such as Cartier jewellery and Louis Vuitton goods.

She is expected to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on 2 October.

Meanwhile, speaking over the development, Andy Kelly, Head of the NCA’s International Corruption Unit—ICU said, “We suspect Diezani Alison-Madueke abused her power in Nigeria and accepted financial rewards for awarding multi-million pound contracts.

“These charges are a milestone in what has been a thorough and complex international investigation.

“Bribery is a pervasive form of corruption, which enables serious criminality and can have devastating consequences for developing countries. We will continue to work with partners here and overseas to tackle the threat.”
