This is a little film which resonated with me - I gave up DJing in clubs nearly a decade ago because I was affected by the very thing these ladies discuss. Do I dare to express an opinion on social media anymore... Well, here goes...
Being constantly told how 'hot' it was to see DJ who also happens to be female behind the decks isn't a compliment, nor is tips on track selection or how I could perhaps doit better or engage better with an audience - a mix of things my awesome and mostly male DJ friends never dealt with much as far as I could tell.
I was never asking for objectification, I just wanted to play tunes I liked and share them with whoever fancied listening. I am glad I have podcasting to channel that now (when I get my arse in gear to make one!). I am so glad to see that world changing for the better - albeit, the numbers are still no better for female to male DJ's.
Its about representation of talent, and nurturing that talent - perhaps I was just a bit s**t, no denying that - but perhaps the industry has a lot of toxicity it needs to deal with first and at least the ladies in this film are trying to address that.
Long live the TUNES!
Studies show less than 5% of the music tech industry is female. This business is trying to change that.
