It’s World Mental Health day today, and I wanted to mark the occasion with 2 unique albums of a musician who sadly took their own life before releasing any music to the public. Those who know about Wacky, knows mental health is at the heart of it. It’s also about the person who’s tragic story and creative excellence inspired the Zine in the first place - my father Mark Ashley Waterfield.

My father Mark was a musician, songwriter, poet, actor, performer… During one of our last conversations in 2016, my father asked me to help him post his music on . Through the grief it has taken me until 2016 to muster the strength to post these tracks. They’re beautiful and haunting and amazing, and I hope you enjoy listening as much as I do. Rest in piece dad, may you live on through your music 🎶

First Album ‘mAw’ (1990) Genre: 80s Electronica

Folk Ballads (2016) an eclectic mix of traditional folk music, ballads, war songs and spoken word performances.

Due to popular demand, Wacky Zine The Eccentricity Issue is now available to buy online as an E-zine! Currently on sale to purchase for £6 only on wackyzine.com/wackyshop/p/wacky-zine-number-1-the-eccentricity-issue

Since I founded Wacky in 2020, I’ve been resisting making the magazine available online. As an artist, I’ve always loved the idea of people enjoying a physical publication, feeling the smell, texture and thickness of the paper. 10 years ago I turned my nose up at digital artwork, but now I’m using it prolifically (including in the Zine artwork itself)! Even though my love for the physical, art and design experience is still strong, and part of Wacky’s mission is to keep printed publications alive, the digital world continues to evolve at an even stronger rate over the last few years. So It’s become evident Wacky should evolve too, and be made available at a lower price online - for those of you who love the digital, for environmental and economical reasons as well as convenience. I hope you enjoy, and I hope this means the Wacky message can be spread further across the world.

Heather Waterfield talks about the definitive moment that meant Wacky Zine had to be born. The magazine about mental health, eccentricity, nonconformity and creativity, became another stage on a personal journey towards self-acceptance. Interviewed by Liso Thole and Joanne Little
in collaboration with All Ears Creative. Filmed by Anthony Gray. Logo by Heather Waterfield.

“Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.” 🧠 Bernard M. Baruch said that in 1948. To this day many of us still strive to be normal. But why?Psychologist Solomon Asch proved in 1950s that most people choose to conform, prefer to blend in to the rest of the crowd than as . Why do we measure ourselves & compare ourselves to everyone around us, when our and celebrating our like ‘ ’, instead hiding them away may make us far happier and more content in ourselves and our lives. This project was born from a need to discover more about myself, and why at age 27 I’m only just learning how to be my authentic self. Like many other people I have discovered I still have many and that need to be unpicked on the path towards and . Wacky’s mission is to encourage others to be more eccentric, express yourself, be , , different sides of yourself, don’t allow others to dim your light. Be true to yourself.

The Wacky logo is here 🧡💙💜✨designed by me 🦊 inspired by my father Mark Waterfield who had a fox tattoo, which became his totem animal.
The logo depicts the 2 main pillars for the brand: Mental Health and Creative Expression.
My father on the right hand side who inspired Wacky Zine sadly due to his mental health problems, and tragic su***de. The fox on the left was my father’s spirit animal. Foxes are mysterious, playful, clever and curious. The image of my father comes from the cover of his first music album released before I was born, symbolising the creative side of the Wacky brand.

Pencil drawing of .taggart 💎🍁🌷👑 Everything about Pomai and her beautiful vibrant clothing exudes fun and colour. She’s one of the happiest people I know and reminds us of the importance of play and pure self-expression in life. If we all just expressed our creativity however we wanted regardless of anyone’s opinions, the world would be a better place 🤩✨💛 original photo by 💛 A5 coloured prints available via the website in bio. ‘Is your favourite influencer even real?’
The piece addresses intellectual and technological greed, via artificial intelligence, a reaction to the fact AI is being implemented into our lives more and more, without our knowledge or real control. Turning the far fetched sci-fi fantasy of robots taking over the world, into a potential reality.

Edited and designed in Adobe Photoshop by Heather Waterfield. Original painting by Giovan Battista Tiepopo Cir, ‘The Angels Appear to Abraham’ (1696-1770).

This traditional, classical painting has been modified to comment on issues surrounding consumerism and overconsumption, to encourage reflection on the inevitable damage we are causing to ourselves and the planet. This piece is part of a series addressing the potential dystopian consequences of the endless greed and hunger for beauty and intelligence in Western society.

This piece represents both our hunger for beauty and for technology. The two figures at the top of the image are AI influencers. The fact that these AI are given fake personas just like real influencers, is an unsettling concept to me. This seems to me like the closest we’ve come to AI being integrated into real life almost seamlessly.

This project is born from a concern that in a post-truth world of fake news and AI, it no longer seems to matter if something is real or fake, truth or a lie, authentic or inauthentic, in order to be consumed. With beauty now extending to artificial/AI standards, this design questions the long- term effects of introducing more figures like Lil Miquela into the social media feeds of highly impressionable young girls - in an already comparison obsessed world.

It’s mental health awareness week, and I want to remind you that It’s okay not to be okay🤍 don’t suffer your demons alone, talk to someone, ask for help. Mental health problems are experienced by 1 in 4 of us, you are not alone, and you are so loved.

Taking inspiration from Chinese Shanzhai imitation culture, the project reimagines and subverts contemporary culture, redefining the original meaning of classical artworks by integrating contemporary figures within historical contexts. I replaced the original subject (Florinda) with Kim Kardashian to draw attention to the modern day idea of the ‘beautiful woman’ and it’s power in our society. Highlighting the contrast between then and now, and all that comes with the knowledge of how Western society has changed since when it was painted in 1852 (for better or worse). The original painting by Franz Xaver Winterhalter, ‘Florinda’, once spent time in the company of royalty, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The project encourages reflection on the effects of consumption, idolatry and the overvaluing of beauty. Made using Adobe Photoshop.

A snippet of Wacky’s new short film 🎥 for No.2 The Collecting issue. Celebrating maximalism and productive obsessions, the Collecting Conversations series explores creative expression through the lens of collecting, and how the objects we make and collect reflect our identities, personalities and affect our mental well-being. As a way of responding and celebrating my own collections, I’ve spent many of the past months making plaster casts of some of my sacred objects, building up a collection of collections. This installation exhibits those plaster casts representing some of my sacred objects and collections. Each one symbolises a memory, a time in my life, my interests and values, or something that inspires me and my creative work. See the full film on the Wacky Zine YouTube channel, and 6 other collectors open up about why the objects are important to them.
