A little test of some printmaking-inspired patterns for a short film we're working on. Our graphic designer buddies have been doing this for, like, a coupla thousand years, but it's actually pretty hard to do in 3D animation. We came up with a new cool way of doing it, using some fancy maths tricks and realtime shaders - no postproduction at all😎 This one's built using & but you should be able to implement the techniques in other 3D packages as well. More to follow 😉

Some from our music video for the fabulous Rina Sawayama! This week we're sharing some of the original colour sketches. These set the mood, and work as a guide for work on both the physical and virtual sets. The steps are simple:

1) establish a rough composition. It's done as so it's super easy to recolor.
2) figure out the value relationships (what's light and dark)
3) tweak the hue & saturation
4) make the video

actually step 4 was pretty involved - thanks to Bild Studios, I am Dave the goldfish and James Medcraft for makin it possible 😘

This was a fun one - a project about our favourite place, space ⭐⭐⭐‍🚀⭐⭐⭐
This one's pretty much Adobe all the way - rough layouts in Adobe Photoshop, clean vector art in Adobe Illustrator, some cute frame-by-frame animations in Adobe Animate and all tied together in Adobe After Effects. Throw in a few controls (with ), a custom IK expression for the hand, animate it around a bit, slap some chill electro music on there and you're done. Simple 😁

It's been 4 years, and nearly 90 projects. We've picked out a few of our faves so you can see where we've been, and where we want to go.

We'd like to take the opportunity to say a massive thank you to all the talented people who've helped us out. In particular, this reel features design work from Alexander Hellebaut & Nick Stoney, design and animation from
Léa Pietrzyk, and - last but not least - modelling, animation and all-round general inspiration from Ed Lim. You guys rock!

Here's a quick time-lapse of some animated concept art for a music video. Really enjoyed experimenting with the colours on this one: night-time scenes can often end up quite blue by default, so was fun to try something different on this one...
