Dandelions provide early forage for Pollinators in the Northern Hemisphere 🌼🌼🐝

Just a reminder to those in the Northern Hemisphere that Dandelions are a key source of early nectar to Pollinators so consider leaving a few to flower if you are mowing 🐝

Dandelion (genus Taraxacum) are flowering plants in the family Asteraceae, which consists of species commonly known as dandelions native to Eurasia and introduced into North America (where other locally native flora provide early forage too), but the two commonplace species in the wider world, T. officinale and T. erythrospermum, which were introduced from Europe and do now propagate as wildflowers in those regions. Both species are edible in their entirety. The common name dandelion comes from French "dent-de-lion", meaning "lion's tooth". Like other members of the family Asteraceae, they have very small flowers collected together into a composite flower head. Each single flower in a head is called a floret. In part due to their abundance along with being a generalist species, dandelions are one of the most vital early spring nectar sources for a wide host of pollinators that themselves are critical to pollination of later flowering plants.

Dandelions are important early forage for Pollinators.. 🐝 πŸ¦‹

Just a reminder to those in the Northern Hemisphere that Dandelions are a key source of early nectar to Pollinators, flowering normally begins in a few weeks time but we're already getting reports of Dandelions appearing across the hemisphere, so consider leaving a few plants to flower if you are mowing 🐝

Dandelion (genus Taraxacum) are flowering plants in the family Asteraceae, which consists of species commonly known as dandelions native to Eurasia and to North America, but the two commonplace species in the wider world, T. officinale and T. erythrospermum, were also introduced from Europe and now propagate as wildflowers in those regions including North Americawhere they are considered introduced. Both species are edible in their entirety. The common name dandelion comes from French "dent-de-lion", meaning "lion's tooth". In part due to their abundance along with being a generalist species, dandelions are one of the most vital early spring nectar sources for a wide host of pollinators that themselves are critical to pollination of later flowering plants. Although they are appearing earlier, May-June is a peak blooming time critical for Pollinators.

Hoverflies (family Syrphidae) are the second most important pollinators.

Hoverflies (family Syrphidae): As their common name suggests, these important Pollinators are often seen hovering or nectaring at flowers; the adults of many species feed mainly on nectar and pollen. They are the second most important pollinator after Bees.

πŸ¦‹ Monarch (Danaus plexippus): This is a milkweed butterfly and the most familiar North American species, its wings feature an easily recognisable black, orange, and white pattern with a wingspan of 10.2cm (4in). This species undertakes huge multi-generational migrations from Mexico, through the USA and into Canada and back!

The World Wildlife Fund have reported that Eastern migratory monarch butterfly populations decreased by an Alarming 59% in relation to the previous year. Scientists studying Monarchs believe some of the decline is due to rising high temperatures and drought in Canada and the USA. The annual survey of migratory monarchs is undertaken by WWF and its partners and Thank you to many members of Wildlife.net who have told us you help with the survey and have alerted us to this worrying trend..
Experts measure the area of forest in which monarch butterflies hibernate each winter, providing a scientific indicator of their population status, see more details from WWF at: https://wwf.to/3UycTnV. πŸ¦‹

UK Wildlife Presenter Chris Packham a good friend of Sir David Attenborough has been assigned a bodyguard for his BBC Wildlife TV Show co-hosted with Michaela Strachan in the UK

Shocking News today that Chris Packham the BBC Springwatch TV Wildlife Presenter in the UK has been assigned a bodyguard due to specific threats..

Chris has been an advocate and key driving force in raising awareness of the plight of Wildlife species and loss of habitat, in addition to raising awareness of, and legally tackling, Wildlife crime and Climate Change inaction.

Sadly, Chris has received threats before - and once had dead crows strung up outside his home and a vehicle set on fire outside his gates.

Chris Packham has been forced to take and win libel suits against him and also bravely filed a High Court legal challenge to the UK Government for a decision to weaken key Climate Change policies. The broadcaster and environmental campaigner has applied for a judicial review of the Government's decision to ditch the timetable for phasing out petrol and diesel powered cars and vans, gas boilers, off-grid fossil fuel domestic heating and minimum energy ratings for homes.

Chris says he has a bodyguard on BBC Two's Winterwatch after "specific threats" were made against him.

For those who are not aware, Chris is a great friend of Sir David Attenborough and he presents the UK's top seasonal wildlife show with the brilliant co-host Michaela Strachan.

"A couple of times recently, before the Watches, we've had specific threats for me," Packham told the Mirror.

"So we've had a person who's there and stays at the hotel, and then goes with me to the place."

The bodyguard is said to accompany Packham during and after filming.

"We have had several threats recently that are not death threats but they're saying, 'We're going to harm you'," he said.

"And they come, unbelievably, from emails.

"So we've got the person's email address, obviously, I've reported them to the police.

"I haven't heard back from the police but they've acknowledged receipt of them. So we've had two in the last month, saying, 'I'm going to harm you and harm your family'."

Chris has received threats before and had dead crows strung up outside his home in 2019 after he supported a legal challenge which led to restrictions on shooting so-called "pest" birds.

His New Forest home was also targeted by arsonists in 2021, with hooded men driving up to his gates and setting a Land Rover on fire late at night.

Packham told the Mirror that police had an idea who was responsible and had described them as "career criminals" from outside the area who were probably paid to do the job.

The Wildlife.net team wish to Thank Chris for making a stand for Wildlife and extend our support to him in his objective of protecting Wildlife in the UK and around the world.
