Thanks to our judge Matt Farnham for this post. We are spreading it.

Don't be fooled by this narrative that retailers will have to cut jobs and raise prices to stay in business. The main complainants made massive profits last year and are on track to make more this year.

Same as the "Retailers" complaining about costs.

Tesco 2023 profit: 2.9 billion
Amazon 2023 Profit: 330B
Greggs 2023 Profit: 188.3M
Next 2023 Profit: 430M
Primark 2023 Profit: 142m
Boots 2023 Profit: 88m

The retailers could easily absorb the costs and still make mammoth profits, just not as big as the ones they made "last year" but they'll try and pass that cost on to us.

Good Afternoon WLFF

It's the 17th again, and we have an update for you.

Submissions Update: 28 talented filmmakers have submitted to 49 categories.

New Website Coming: We are still working on this project and scope possible funding opportunities to make this new website as good as any other website you would find on a major city film festival website. The feedback is that the people from West Lothian are proud of our festival, and we want a website that matches that pride.

Just a reminder that all the categories from 2024 will be returning in 2025, PLUS we have introduced new categories:

- Best Young Person Film (12 years and under)
- Best Young Person Film (13 years to 18 years)
- Best Young Person Film (19 years to 26 years)
- Best of Home Nations
- Best of Celtic Nations
- Best Screenplay
- Best Supporting Actor
- Best Supporting Actress
- Most Authentic Background

We have also made some minor adjustments to the qualifying criteria. Some categories now have wider geographical boundaries. Best Student Film and Best Young Person Film are now open to Scotland, not just the Lothians. Additionally, Best Screenplay and Best TV Series are now available worldwide.

We’re looking forward to another incredible festival in 2025, and we can’t wait to see what you’ve been working on! 🎥

Firefly Arts is a youth theatre company based in Livingston that produces an annual Christmas show with young performers supported by a professional team. The performances will take place in the Black Box Studio at Howden Park Centre, which has a 100-seat capacity and an end-on configuration.

The Role
The Lighting Designer is in charge of all the artistic decisions for the lighting of the winter show production 2024. They will work closely with the director to create the lighting design that’s integral to the overall look and feel. You must have experience with the ETC Nomand programme.

Key Skills
- The ability to turn an idea, concept or mood into lighting
- Working collaboratively and being open to the contribution of others. Also, being objective about whether a lighting state works within the context of the production
- The ability to work under pressure, including time constraints, achieving results thoroughly and quickly
- Good communication skills

Responsibilities
- Reading a script carefully, being aware of references to lighting relevant to both time and place
- Working with the Director and Set Designer to design a world of light that supports the production.
- Drafting a lighting plan and liaising with appropriate personnel to enable them to rig the lights.
- Focusing the lights – pointing them in the correct direction, deciding how large and what shape the light from each instrument needs to be and in what colour.

Schedule
- All rehearsals and performances will take place at Howden Park Centre, Livingston. The schedule is as follows:
- Thursday, 21st November from 5 pm- 7 pm (non-technical run-through)
2 x days of rigging:

14/10/2024

We have had a few emails recently with requests for full waivers. While this is a business, we are not complete ogres. Over £4k worth of discounts were granted to filmmakers to submit to the 2024 festival. This has imbalanced our books significantly, meaning we are not starting from square one for the 2025 festival but from square -1, or in this case, -2500.

In the spirit of community and support for filmmakers, fees could be waived in exceptional circumstances, and these requests must be received no later than December 31st, 2024. They must be accompanied by the following with no exceptions:

- 4K MP4 of Film
- 4K MP4 of Trailer
- A fully tested and verified DCP File
- Press Release Document – Published source or your own unpublished copy
- Cover Letter Addressed to the Festival Director
- High-Res BTS Photography and Stills
- Official High Production Value Movie Poster (40” x 30” or 30” x 40”)
- Assured and Guaranteed Participation in PR-related Activities, e.g. social media, in-person media days, and press conferences.
- British Board of Film Classification (Negotiable)

Contact [email protected] to discuss this. Please note that waivers offered and accepted do not guarantee a particular outcome regarding film festival screening days or nominee status.

Let us know if you have uploaded all of the above to your FilmFreeway profile already.

It seems our modern-day screen heroes are dropping every other week, and this week is pretty tough. The loss of the super Maggie Smith, a talent whose brilliance has illuminated screens and stages for generations. With her unique blend of wit, grace, and a touch of mischief, she brought to life characters that resonated deeply with audiences worldwide.

From her unforgettable role as Professor McGonagall in the "Harry Potter" series to the sharp-tongued yet tender Violet Crawley in "Downton Abbey," Maggie had an extraordinary ability to blend strength with vulnerability. Her performances were not just acts; they were invitations to explore the complexities of human emotion, leaving us both entertained and enlightened.

Beyond her roles, Maggie Smith was a beacon of resilience. Her journey through the ups and downs of life and career inspired many, proving that true artistry knows no age. Her commitment to her craft and her ability to convey profound truths through her characters remind us of the power of storytelling.

As we reflect on her legacy, let us cherish the laughter, the tears, and the unforgettable moments she gifted us. Rest in Peace, dear Maggie; your light will continue to shine through the stories you left behind.
