our trip to Glasgow for was a success ❤️

it was our first attendance at the national conference as a publication and, to be honest, just to be there and shortlisted for an award was a dream! we received invaluable insight from some fantastic speakers and had the chance to meet fellow student journalists from incredible publications across the country 🥰

we also loved getting to see some of the city of Glasgow in our free time (swipe to see a little bit of what we got up to 🤨)

but it’s back to business as usual this week - april pitch call and march article of the month poll are coming tomorrow. members, keep an eye out on your emails!

just a final thank you to for putting such a huge event together and also for making it possible for all of our committee to attend! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

A trip to Vacationland: Portland, Maine

Known affectionately to Americans as Vacationland, Maine’s largest city is not so well known outside of North America. Just a 2-hour bus journey from Boston, the comparatively small city boasts culture, history, and some of New England’s most beautiful scenery.

Having spent 9 months studying abroad there, I may be biased, but Portland is one of the hidden gems of the East Coast to foreign travellers.

REVIEW: 100 gecs – 10,000 gecs: An Irreverent Musical Playground

If you don’t inhabit a certain corner of the internet, you’d be forgiven for never having heard of 100 gecs. The duo, formed of Dylan Brady and Laura Les, were one of the first acts to popularise a genre now known as hyperpop, with their 2019 debut album 1000 gecs.

It’s understandable, then, that the follow up, somewhat confusingly titled 10,000 gecs, has been so hotly anticipated.

REVIEW: Co***ne Bear – A Bear Out Of Hell

What can I say that hasn’t already been said about Co***ne Bear? We all have that weird cinema goblin friend who’s seen it and is more than likely raving about it. I, for one, know that we at LSM have been dying to put out this review for a little while.

Let’s start by getting the obvious out of the way – this movie is about a big black bear that does a lot of co***ne in the Georgian woods and, when the film doubles down on that concept, it shines.

Women in Journalism – Facing Prejudice, Unfair Pay, and a Lack of Opportunities

There have been several cases where women have been treated unfairly in the journalism field, simply because of their gender. Women often do not receive the same pay as their male colleagues, or do not have the same opportunities to higher positions as men.

This is a common occurrence across countless industries, which is why challenging it is so important.

REVIEW: Gorillaz – Cracker Island

Cracker Island is the eighth studio album by popular virtual band, Gorillaz. Lead by Damon Albarn of Blur fame, the band originally started out as a trip hop band - combining dusty drum samples and deep bass lines with catchy pop melodies and unique, but well utilised, special guest features.

Early hits such as Clint Eastwood and Feel Good Inc made listeners aware that Gorillaz were a band to keep an eye out for, and also that Albarn wasn’t just a one trick pony.

However, the band’s latest album, Cracker Island, is easily one of the weakest of their whole career.

REVIEW: London Native Loyle Carner visits Leicester on the ‘Hugo’ Tour

On Friday 3rd March, Leicester saw South London’s very own Loyle Carner perform at De Montfort Hall as part of the hugo tour, celebrating the release of his highly personal and emotional third album.

The concert was supported by up-and-coming London based producer/artist, Wesley Joseph – who performed songs from his most recent project, GLOW, such as the dark and sultry ‘Cold Summer’ or ‘Thrilla’ from the ULTRAMARINE album.

REVIEW: The Last of Us is a masterpiece in video game adaptation

“In a dystopian world, a mutation of a fungus known as cordyceps has infected the human population, turning them into zombie-like creatures. With rampant famine, sickness, and cannibalism, every living person’s only goal is survival. This is the nature of Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann’s show The Last of Us, based on Naughty Dog’s 2013 video game of the same name.”

ARTS & CULTURE: Why is Blue Lock getting so much attention?

The sports genre in anime has been known to unite anime watchers and sports lovers for decades now, going all the way back to when Slam Dunk came out in the 90s. Kuroko No Basuke, Haikyuu and Free are all blueprints for people that love this genre. Unfortunately, they’ve failed to hit the mark when it comes to football – until now.

Blue Lock is the most recent sports anime to come out and already has a huge following. Nevertheless, being a football anime isn’t the only exciting aspect of the show. It explores a concept that has never been done in the sports genre before: every man for himself.

NEWS: ’s Dr Joseph Choonara called upon Vice-Chancellor Nishan Canagarajah to act as a ‘real Citizen of Change’ during a Students’ Union-hosted debate last Monday.

Making reference to the University of Leicester’s marketing slogan, this statement comes after the ‘unprecedented’ move of calling 18 days of strike action over pay, pensions and working conditions.

Although the UCU has since called a national ‘two week period of calm’, the panel debate took place earlier in the week.

NEWS: Recent poll finds Labour and Lib Dems dominant among young adult voting intentions

Young adults are over ten times more likely to vote for Labour than the Conservative Party at the next general election, a recent poll finds.

47% of voters aged between 16-24 said they would intend to vote for Keir Starmer’s party if there were a General Election tomorrow, while just 4% indicated their desire to cross the box for the Tories.
