PhD student studying in UAE jailed for life

Matthew Hedges has been sentenced to life imprisonment in the United Arab Emirates on charges of being a spy for the UK.

Although he is denying the charges saying that he was just conducting research for his PhD, the court still found him guilty on the 21st.

His family claim that the guilty verdict was based on a confession he signed because he was given it written in Arabic so he didn’t understand what he was signing.

They also claim that he was denied the right to a lawyer during the initial investigations and that his mental and physical health has worsened since being detained.

The foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt is apparently in the process of trying to talk to the UAE government to get the charges dropped.

A Conservative MP, Crispin Blunt, told the Prime Minister at Question time that she should make it clear to the UAE government that the UK would not be committed to their defence if Hedges wasn’t released.

Hedges has 30 days to appeal the verdict, which he hopes will get him released.
