There are certain books that leave me thoughtful and encouraged to keep doing the right things. We just finished editing one of such books and we can't wait to release it.

I once asked a question and I still haven't gotten the answer: how did the normal become abnormal and vice versa?

✅How do you stand your ground in an environment where you are the only one saying and doing the right things?

Amazon isn't a shelve for your book; it's a market and you should make sales if you do it right.

What Language Does Your Book Speak?

I need to say this. Amazon is an international platform. While it is encouraged that you publish your books there, you may need to consider the language your book speaks.

Is it strongly targeted at Nigerians?

One of the reasons we recommend Amazon is because it has the paperback option for those who prefer the hard copy of your books (Especially when you are unable to afford printing locally).

However, I strongly believe that if it will be up on Amazon, it should have some global relevance, no matter how small.

You already know that any book on Amazon can be accessed by anyone, anywhere. So, if the title captivates someone in Japan and he goes ahead to buy it, he should find something relevant and not regret he bought your book.

If it's strongly Nigerian, you may need to prioritise local platforms and consider printing hard copies locally.

My point is, who you write for determines how you write and what language you use.

QUESTION: is it right for your audience to choose the title/cover of your book?

Generally speaking, it is right. So many writers have used that method and gladly, it worked for them.

However, I have discovered that the decision of the people may end up not being what you have in your heart so, many times, when you go ahead with it, you live with the discomfort for as long as that "mistake" is not corrected.

I am currently an author of four books. The first design I did for my book was rejected by the audience when I asked them to choose. Truthfully, I wanted the rejected design but they didn't want it. I felt unsatisfied with my book for a long time until I went back to the design in my heart. The truth is, I saw that design before it was even actually designed. Most surprising was that I didn't tell the designer what to do. I just knew how I wanted the book to look and lo, it came out that way.

Guess what, that's my most sold book on Amazon and physically.

I'm not saying you should insist on what you think is fine or better. I think it's wisdom to know when to present a cover of your choice and when to give your potential readers the opportunity to partake in your writing journey by letting them choose what cover they love best.

Same applies when it comes to choosing a title. Remember, your target audience are your heroes and not really you. So, on the long run, if you are convinced a particular cover is what's most suitable beyond sentiments, it may eventually be a good idea for everyone, just like my first book.

As much as I want you to write a book on that subject you are so good at, or even on that experience you had that I'm sure would help so many people, I do not want you to be ignorant of the other aspects of writing a book.

- Don't be the Author who has written a book but doesn't know how to sell it

- Don't be the Author who doesn't know what an ISBN is or if he/she needs one

- Don't be the Author who is clueless about the stages his/her book will go through before it is available for purchase

- Dont be the Author who doesn't understand the value of a well designed cover. Stop saying "ah, this amount for "just" cover design?" Don't undermine creative jobs that way

- Don't be the Author who writes with short cuts all the time

- Don't be the Author who writes his foreword himself and makes it an introduction instead of an actual Foreword

- Don't be the Author who doesn't know what formatting is. You tell me your book is ready for publishing and send me a scattered work in MS word

It's okay if you don't don't know these things yet, but try to know them. It's important because as an Author, you have a new craft and that is the business of writing books!

HERE'S WHY MOST AUTHORS PREFER THE CREAM BOND PAPER TO WHITE

A client who wanted to have his book printed got confused when I asked what paper type he would prefer. He didn't know the difference between the cream bond paper and white (which happens to be the most popularly used for book printing even though there are others).

The cream bond paper is the one that is cream in colour. When you place the white paper side by side with the cream bond, you will notice the contrast even more. So here's why Authors prefer it:

1. It is favourable to the eyes when reading. I have heard many people complain that the white paper is too sharp for their eyes. I haven't experienced this though but many readers would rather buy a book with the cream bond paper than white.

As a book vendor, a client wanted to get over 20 copies of different books. When he discovered they were white, he didn't buy anymore. Now, I sell mostly cream bonded books.

2. It is expensive. Some Authors go for cream bond simply because they want their books to look rich/expensive and not necessarily because they think it is reader-friendly. This one is basically for prestige.

3. Some Authors prefer the cream bond paper because their friends or mentors use it. I'm sure of this one because I have worked with 10s of Authors. They have no idea of what the cream bond is about; they just want to follow someone else. It's okay if you are like that. There's no harm in copying good things.

4. Generally speaking, a book with cream bond paper is cool. This is not to run down the white paper. Funny enough, there are Authors and Readers who will not use the cream bond, not because they cannot afford it but because they just love it.

I have two books in cream bond paper. I have already told myself that one of my books will have the white paper because i love both papers.

In my next post, I'll talk about the factors to consider when choosing what paper type.

I have noticed, with a bit of sadness, that Authors just write their books without ANY idea on basic matters like an appropriate cover design, about the author, about the book, book marketing and sales or even the kind of photo to be used at the slot for about the author.

I get funny questions like:

×On what Platforms will my book sell most?

×Hope you will sell my books?

× Is an ISBN compulsory?

× What do you think of this selfie?

× How do I write an introduction?

× How do I know when to end a chapter?

Etc.

This made me take it upon myself to create an ebook Platform on WhatsApp. It's been in existence since September, 2021 and I have been teaching my members these basics and more. My members can attest. We are currently over 500 in number.

I also give room for questions and as soon as I find the time, I try to respond to them all.

Writing a book is not enough; you should know the ropes. There are questions that shouldn't come as long as you are an Author because it is assumed that from the point of writing to completion, you should have done your research.

But then, it's okay to not know these things and I am glad to help.
