This week at South Street Kids they continued their work in partnership with Suffolk Wildlife Trust, spending the session collaging from wildlife magazines, drawing their favourite wild creatures, plants or scene, and then also writing poems inspired by the theme. In the second half of the session they did a litter pick in the Eastern Angles Theatre Company garden and carpark to help encourage wildlife to return and build their homes, or for plants and flowers to grow come spring! 🌱🐛

The wonderfully talented New Gen youth music group will be launching their 3 track EP around Mental Health that they have been working on since the end of 2022, at The Smokehouse on Wednesday 15th of February! 6 - 7pm. Entry is FREE so just turn up on the day!

South Street Kids has been working on some ideas for an upcoming show we will hopefully be hosting at Eastern Angles on April 1st. It has been full of creative ideas, storytelling, dancing and delegating thus-far! It was fantastic to see the return of previous coordinator Laura Norman and Rosy-May Dancer who has worked with some of our young people at Hamford Hall.

How great does this sound! New Gen has been continuing the recording section of their Mental Health project this half-term, with the help of Punch Studios. The second group of three recorded this week; with group one mixing and mastering their recording from last week and group three rehearsing in preparations for next. We look forward to showing you the final product! 😄

✨ Training the next generation of Sound Engineers ✨

In-house Sound Engineer for The Smokehouse Gareth ran a 2-day training course to give some of the volunteers who were particularly interested in sound engineering an opportunity to learn in a relaxed environment before taking on more critical roles for future gigs at The Smokehouse.

They first looked at some basic sound theory and signal flow in an analogue system. After this they worked on the main PA in the Smokehouse, moving through how the digital hardware and software work, running soundchecks and getting a good audio balance in the room. At some point everyone worked up a front-of-house mix and used an iPad to mix monitors from the side of the stage.

If you’re 16 to 19 and want to learn about or work in film, BFI Film Academy can help.

Aimed at ALL young people aged 16- 19 years, Film Academy is especially designed for young people with some demonstrable film making interest and/or experience. Supported by the Department for Education, National Lottery, Screen Scotland and Northern Ireland Screen, it provides a fast-paced, fun and practical film making experience. This course will take place at the University of Suffolk.

This week BBC Introducing-featured artist Cevanne came from London to deliver a workshop around ‘Sampling for Songwriting’ with New Gen at The Baths. She brought along her Celtic harp which the young people recorded with their phones to create ideas via the BandLab App. They were also introduced to another music software Ableton and able to trigger samples with a launch pad.

🙌 We're thrilled to have received funding from for a brand new project Tune Up at The Smokehouse! We'll be running a new course for 16-25 yr olds in Live Music Events, with industry guests, and the goal of putting on a gig at after the 10 week course!

🗣️ “Encouraging our South Street Kids to think about the environment and how to look after the world we live in, we took a trip to felixstowe to do some litter picking. We had 14 young people attend with an older sibling supporting. They all followed safety rules for collecting rubbish from the beach and reflected on how rubbish is bad for the planet.

Thanks to Ipswich School and their driver Nick for the kind help of the minibus for transport to Felixstowe. “
