Music festivals are created by people with the vision and commitment to jump through hoops and over hurdles, and generally work very hard. Today's episode tells the story of how Allen Valleys Folk Festival came to be, as Craig Atkinson and Peter Alcroft describe how they pursued their ambition to make it the North’s premier small folk festival by involving the community and paying close attention to audience needs.

Is it too early to think about Christmas? Of course it is - there's never a good time, really - but episodes for 3tynespodcast are now recorded and scheduled up to that fateful day. Only the episodes on Bellingham All Acoustic Music Festival (BAAFEST) and the Allen Valleys Folk Festival have yet to be recorded. Still to come this year are features on singer Katie Doherty, producer Julie Bartley, Highlights North Director Kate Lynch, musicians Phil Ogg, Yakka Doon and Celia Bryce, a ceilidh and a pub session, and luthier Gary Southwell. I'm now putting together a list of guests I'd like to talk to and topics I'd like to cover next year so if that phone rings, pick it up! Til then, please subscribe and tell your friends about us!

Today's guest is my good friend Kim Bull, player and maker of the Northumbrian pipes. In this epic three-parter, Kim talks about the history of the pipes and the intricacies of making them. If you ever wondered how one of the UK's premier canoe and kayak coaches became a piper in the outer lands of the 3tynes, then this is the episode for you.
Kim plays several traditional tunes in this episode, including Roy M Higman's Lament of the Border Reiver (played on the Border pipes).
