Are you being paid correctly?

The National Minimum Wage (NMW) and National Living Wage (NLW) are the minimum your employer needs to be paying you, from 1st April 2025.

Your employer should automatically be paying you the correct rate, but it never hurts to check and make sure!

Another key area the Financial Skills for Teens course helps you understand is budgeting.

Being able to budget and understand what you need to include in a budget is the difference between moving into a property you can afford or can not afford.

From rent, council tax, and even utilities the budgeting section helps you understand the average costs of bills, so you have a grasp of how to plan ahead before moving out or moving into a new property.

These are vital skills which are helpful now and in the future, to help you really have a handle on your money and know how much things will cost.

We will explore the average rental costs for each nation in the UK, and you will be given key information so you can see how much things like water rates and council tax will be too.

Considering the average person moves 6 times in their lifetime, budgeting is clearly something that we all need to know and understand.

If you would like to know more about what the course offers, please see the website link in the comments.

Understanding what you can earn in the Financial Skills for Teens course, is a whole section which helps you to understand key areas like National Minimum Wage (NMW), how much graduates can earn, and even the apprenticeships rate of pay and how they work too.

NMW is the minimum your employer must pay you depending on your age - this is reviewed every year, and any increases are implemented on 1st April. This is an important thing to know and understand, so you work out whether you are being paid correctly.

The course provides you with examples of how you can calculate your annual salary or hourly rate so you can make sure you are being paid correctly.

You can also find information on how apprenticeships work, how you can search and apply for these, along with how NMW works for apprentices.

All of this is included, so you are armed with the knowledge of key information and you can make informed decisions on your future.

The course will help you to understand how to deal with your finances and explain key areas such as savings including interest rates, credit contracts such as buy now pay later schemes and how to recognise your needs versus your wants.

Understanding money management includes how to spend your money and also how you can save money too, not just by putting aside money each month but also how to get the most out of your money when you are spending it.

So you turn your laptop on and get this error message - so you need to buy a new one.

But how would you pay for it?

Would you need to use your overdraft or put it on your credit card? Or would you have the money saved?

I'm lucky that I have the savings to pay for a new laptop, and that's exactly what I had to do this week, when my laptop decided to stop working.

I often hear people say "I did have some savings but.....I had to get a new fridge/my car needed a new part etc......" You get the idea - but I always say the fact you had savings was great.

It stopped you having to use credit or borrow the money from the bank for your purchase, but that is not all. You also helped reduce your stress and worry.

You see, having the money saved instantly means you avoid that panic and worry of "how will I afford this/I haven't got the money"

And that to me is PRICELESS.

So the next time you are wondering whether having that emergency fund is worth it, just remember it's not just money you are saving but also your peace of mind.

Money Saving Tip 4 - Pack a reusable or even an empty drinks bottle to refill once you are through security.

Most airports in the UK and even those when returning to the UK have water stations for you to refill water bottles.

With the average price for a bottle of water being anywhere from £2.00 to £3.00 you can easily save you and your family nearly £10..... it might not seem like much, but all these little costs really do add up!

Money Saving Tip 3 - Don't forget to pack the snacks.

We all know the crazy prices you pay at the airport just for a pack of pringles.....just a small tub is £2.00 when you're flying high in the sky.

So by heading into the supermarket before your trip, you could save yourself a fair few pounds by buying a few snacks to take with you.

You can even take fruit and sandwiches through security and aboard most flights, which can save you having to pay extortionate airport and aeroplane prices.

Money Saving Tip 2 - In-flight Meals

Check for discount codes for pre-ordering meals on your flight.

If you download the app for the airline or holiday company you are travelling with, they will send you messages for deals on future holidays and even discount code for pre-ordering food.

I saved 20% off of our lunch order, and the great thing is that on most airlines, as you have pre-ordered, you are served first, too! So not only do you save yourself some money, you beat the queues and wait as well!
