Tip 4

Is there something your child wants that is too expensive to get brand new, or is it something that has been discontinued? Whatever the reason, then vinted, Ebay, marketplace, and even charity shops could be your answer.

From clothes, toys, books, and games, you can get some great deals on some second-hand gifts that are in great condition, with an added bonus of them being more affordable.

So what are you waiting for? Have a look today to see what great deals are available, and save yourself a few £'s this Christmas.

Tip 3

Use Top Gift Cards to purchase items you would normally be buying and get cash back on your spending.

It's simple, create a Tap Cash Back account, and go to Top Gift Cards, and purchase a gift card for the amount you need for the items you were looking to purchase anyway.

From Boots, New Look, and even vintage pubs, there are many options to choose from, and you can get anything from 3% up to 10% in cash back!

So if you were going to purchase goods from a particular retailer and you can get 10% cash back by just buying a gift card this way, it is a great way for our money to go further this festive season.

Tip 2

With the extra spending we do at Christmas, it is always worth checking cash back websites like Quidco or Top Cash Back, to see if they have any offers or cash back available on a website you would be buying from.

Whilst it might only be a few pounds that you get in cash back, the amount you earn can really start to build up, which is basically free money on what you would normally be spending anyway.

Tip 1

Have you seen something on sale or on offer which you think is a great price?

Before you click the “add to basket” or “buy now” button, just take a few minutes to do a quick internet search on the item to see whether what you have seen is actually the best and cheapest deal.

For the sake of a quick Google, you could find another retailer selling the exact item for less, making your money go further this Christmas – even better!

Are you being paid correctly?

The National Minimum Wage (NMW) and National Living Wage (NLW) are the minimum your employer needs to be paying you, from 1st April 2025.

Your employer should automatically be paying you the correct rate, but it never hurts to check and make sure!

Another key area the Financial Skills for Teens course helps you understand is budgeting.

Being able to budget and understand what you need to include in a budget is the difference between moving into a property you can afford or can not afford.

From rent, council tax, and even utilities the budgeting section helps you understand the average costs of bills, so you have a grasp of how to plan ahead before moving out or moving into a new property.

These are vital skills which are helpful now and in the future, to help you really have a handle on your money and know how much things will cost.

We will explore the average rental costs for each nation in the UK, and you will be given key information so you can see how much things like water rates and council tax will be too.

Considering the average person moves 6 times in their lifetime, budgeting is clearly something that we all need to know and understand.

If you would like to know more about what the course offers, please see the website link in the comments.

Understanding what you can earn in the Financial Skills for Teens course, is a whole section which helps you to understand key areas like National Minimum Wage (NMW), how much graduates can earn, and even the apprenticeships rate of pay and how they work too.

NMW is the minimum your employer must pay you depending on your age - this is reviewed every year, and any increases are implemented on 1st April. This is an important thing to know and understand, so you work out whether you are being paid correctly.

The course provides you with examples of how you can calculate your annual salary or hourly rate so you can make sure you are being paid correctly.

You can also find information on how apprenticeships work, how you can search and apply for these, along with how NMW works for apprentices.

All of this is included, so you are armed with the knowledge of key information and you can make informed decisions on your future.

The Financial Skills for Teens course for your DofE Bronze award, allows you to learn valuable skills in relation to money management, but what does that actually mean.

The course will help you to understand how to deal with your finances and explain key areas such as savings including interest rates, credit contracts such as buy now pay later schemes and how to recognise your needs versus your wants.

Understanding money management includes how to spend your money and also how you can save money too, not just by putting aside money each month but also how to get the most out of your money when you are spending it.

These are key skills you can use now and will be of huge value to you in the future, so you can confidentiality make informed decisions about your money and know you are on the right path.

So you turn your laptop on and get this error message - so you need to buy a new one.

But how would you pay for it?

Would you need to use your overdraft or put it on your credit card? Or would you have the money saved?

I'm lucky that I have the savings to pay for a new laptop, and that's exactly what I had to do this week, when my laptop decided to stop working.

I often hear people say "I did have some savings but.....I had to get a new fridge/my car needed a new part etc......" You get the idea - but I always say the fact you had savings was great.

It stopped you having to use credit or borrow the money from the bank for your purchase, but that is not all. You also helped reduce your stress and worry.

You see, having the money saved instantly means you avoid that panic and worry of "how will I afford this/I haven't got the money"

And that to me is PRICELESS.

So the next time you are wondering whether having that emergency fund is worth it, just remember it's not just money you are saving but also your peace of mind.
