Hello, Bob here.

It is with equal measures of excitement and melancholy that I announce PBF Music is permanently closing its doors.

Any current jobs will be finished ASAP but unfortunately I won't be able to take any more on for the time being.

Joe and I would like to thank all of our customers and clients over the years.

I'm re-locating to Cardiff soon but will still be available for tech work and setups. I'll post my new business profile in the near future but if you need to contact me please message this page :)

Another setup out the door!

This lovely example of the older Fender US Deluxe series has had a deep clean, surface marks polished out, frets polished, electronics cleaned, jack upgraded to a PureTone 4-point contact socket, rusted screws replaced, full pocket neck shim, new button felts and a full setup with a set of Elixirs.

Anything loose is now solid and anything sticky is now loose.

Rock and roll 😎

We're open and taking on work again. However, we are now operating on a strictly appointment basis; please message or call ahead to avoid disappointment :)

Gonna be a good 'un!

All the best

Really cool Tanglewood electro-classical which has just had the works. Quick blast through an amp to test it out as the base of the bridge saddle had previously been sanded a bit wonky.

Disclaimer: I cannot play classical to save my life so I treat them like giant ukuleles :P

Another Japanese rock monster from the 80s left the shop today with a refresh and setup, this time in C # standard.

Really cool to see these old instruments still making noise, especially when they're 99% original 🀩

An essential part of doing a setup is putting an instrument through its paces. This lovely 80s Japanese Charvel has just been tuned to drop B with a .145 on the lowest string!

Needs a bit more dialing-in but this old thing packs a PUNCH 😈

Another job done. This Vintage acoustic was brought in pieces. Now, this isn't a repair I would take on normally but breaks were fairly clean and the customer wanted it put together again, even if just for sentimental value.

Dowels, clamps and a bit of love later and she's got a new lease of life!

Another setup about to head out. A very cool 1970s Japanese Maya P-bass tuned to Drop C with a freshly-fitted Fender Original pickup.

This is a little something I put together for myself.

I etched this enclosure a while back with the intent of populating it with two of my personal favourite circuits for blues rock and low gain overdrive:

The right side is a clone of the Analogman Prince of Tone (with the now unobtainium MA856 diodes) and the left is a clone of the Xotic BB Preamp (modded Tubescreamer with active EQ).

Two tiny power conditioners are squeezed inside to ensure as minimal hum and noise as possible and an order switcher on the bottom for added flexability.

We are able to build custom pedals on commission and repair broken ones.

While this hasn't been our focus in the past, please consider a sign of things to come....

This US Music Man Stingray 5 had been in storage with a 9v battery installed. Unfortunately at some point it leaked and caused extensive corrosion on the terminals and wires.

A replacement battery box from Gotoh, some careful cleaning and a bit of soldering later, and good as new.

Always be mindful of active instruments and effects pedals. It's usually worth taking out the batteries if they're going into storage, even if it's just for a few months.

Another job done. Full wiring job and stud install on this customer's very cool kit guitar.

New pot and Seymour Duncan fitted to this lovely Epi Les Paul.

A new pickup can breathe life into an old instrument and even reinvent its character; you can tame a wild axe for the blues or turn a tame guitar into a fire-breather... or get a load of switches fitted and have access to a plethora of new tones.

If you're thinking about a pickup swap or wiring scheme please get in contact, even if it's just for advice. Certain guitars such as SGs, Explorers and Flying Vs can be particular about the tone and output of their pickups.

Testing the trem on a customer's freshly dialled-in Squier Jaguar.

Fender offsets are quirky instruments but can create some magnifiscent tones when setup correctly. The neck angle plays a crucial role in the performance of the bridge and overall tension of the guitar.

Fortunately this one came from the factory with plenty of angle in the pocket and only required heavier strings, widening the nut slots, touch of Loctite on the grub screws to prevent the action dropping during play, tremolo spring adjusted and then completing the setup as usual (with a liberal application of lubricant on all string contact points).

A splash of spring reverb and it's more than happy to do spaghetti-Westerns and surf rock.

Testing out the first setup to come out of the new workshop.

Work carried out on this customer's bass:
- straightened bowed neck
- cleaned and oiled fingerboard
- high frets corrected
- frets polished
- full 0.5deg neck shim
- nut slots cut deeper
- broken tone pot fixed
- new set of Rotosound strings
- pickups adjusted
- action set and intonated
- final clean and polish

If you have an instrument that needs some love please don't hesitate to get in touch!

So things have been up in the air but we finally have some news.

PBF has now officially closed as a retailer. When we opened we thought we would do well to last a year and we managed just over 4.

Bob and Joe would like to thank everyone who has supported us during this time.

Now, it's not all doom and gloom. We are finishing up a new workshop as I type this and will be continuing repairs, mods and setups next week from our new property on Bridge Street!

That's not all: the boys will be tinkering away with a new project focusing on analog effects so keep your eyes (and ears) peeled.

Look out for an official-official announcement next week for our re-launch!
