Hello all! I've had an absolutely mental month, with the last week being especially hard (been working 12-16 hour days as a stagehand, personal assistant, photographer and videographer). So, with that in mind, I am making the difficult decision to prioritise rest. Instead of trying to force out half-baked content in order to publish this month's issue of the magazine before the end of the day, I want to take this time to rest and give you content I really care about at a quality I believe is worth your precious time reading.
I will publish tomorrow, but for now - sleep!

I saw a tweet today that read:
"Support local media outlets. It is the only possible route for us ever to overcome the establishment. As long as the establishment & state control our press, ordinary people stand zero chance of justice." It was written by Howard Beckett (BeckettUnited).

Not to get too political, but WE WHOLEHEARTEDLY AGREE!

The Good News Emporium magazine is proud to be an independent outlet for a variety of important topics. While we maintain a positive perspective in our journalism, we also put a lot of effort into accurate reporting, sharing facts over rhetoric.

It is important to us to maintain our independent status as we grow, and that our readers know this is a fundamental value for us.
Unlike a variety of influential mainstream media outlets over the last few years, no amount of money will ever convince us to sell out this core value.

‼️🫂🗣 GET INVOLVED 🗣🫂‼️
March 21st to the 27th is a week of solidarity for people fighting against racism and racial discrimination. In support of this, the upcoming issue of the magazine will be designed around celebrating influential BAME pioneers throughout history and the modern day.

Each of our 5 sections will include a feature on an influential BAME person. We already have our Discovery section covered, but for the following 4 sections, we are looking for people who inspire you, our readers!!
We are looking for influential people to represent these sections:
💼 BUSINESS,
⚖️ POLITICS AND LAW,
🗺️ WORLDLY EXPERIENCE,
🎨🎭 ARTS AND LEISURE.

Let us know in the comments who inspires you and we will consider them to feature in this month's issue!

Hello all! I hope you are having a fantastic start to 2023!
Unfortunately, I have had to make the very difficult decision to postpone the latest issue of the magazine, due to events beyond my control (horrific food poisoning!)

I intend to get it up and running on the website, as well as sent off to our awesome subscribers, as soon as possible (likely tomorrow).

Please bear with me while I take time to recover my health 🤕

That's another batch of monthly subscriptions sent off to their new homes!! Yaaaay!!

*GIVE AWAY*
With all the disruption caused by the Royal Mail strikes (which we wholeheartedly understand and support, despite it affecting small businesses like ours recently), and what seems to be an administrative error at the printers, we have been sent 7 additional copies of the December issue of The Good News Emporium magazine.

RULES:
- There are only 7 copies available!!
- Like this post and make sure you are following our page to enter.
- Must be based in the UK.
- Please pay postage.

👻 Happy Halloween! 👻
Check out this academic explanation as to why we love spooky stuff!
I'm an avid horror film fan and collector of old books, natural history/entomology, and other oddities.
My fascination for nature and science are two reasons why I started the magazine - knowledge is power and I wanted to create a space where all knowledge is shared and celebrated, because we defeat what scares us when we acquire more knowledge on it...
Except spiders... spiders are always scary 😉

Let us know what your spookiest encounter was or your favourite horror film! 👻👽☠

Wishing a warm and bright Diwali to Hindus, Jains, and Newar Buddhists, and Bandi Chhor Divas for the Sihk community.
For those who may not know, Bandi Chhor Divas celebrates the release of the sixth Guru and 52 other Hindu princes in 1619. It is very important to the Sihk community and coincides with Diwali.

The 10th of October is World Mental Health Day, recognised by the World Health Organi
The theme of 2022's World Mental Health Day, set by the World Federation for Mental Health, is 'Make mental health and wellbeing for all a global priority'.

The Good News Emporium was specifically designed with the purpose of being accessible to all, informative on important topics, and demonstrating how the world does not always have to be all doom and gloom! Balancing positive content with negative is incredibly important for mental wellbeing, and that's where our magazine comes in.

One of our main goals is not only to use our platform to promote mental wellbeing, but also to raise funds for causes and organisations working hard to tackle the global mental health crisis.
We will soon be asking our readers for their input on worthy causes in need of funding, so keep an eye out for upcoming posts!

If you feel like you are struggling with your mental health and need professional advice, check out the NHS or Samaritans websites, or call the Samaritans on 0330 094 5717 (UK only). Reaching out is the first step towards recovery!

07/10/2022

The first Friday of October is World Smile Day! As it is our mission to share positive news stories from around the world, we could not miss the opportunity to share 5 awesome facts about smiling with you all!
1. Babies are born with the ability to smile: Babies learn a lot of behaviours and sounds from watching the people around them, but scientists believe that all babies are born with the ability, since even blind babies smile. Most doctors believe that real smiles occur when babies are awake at the age of four-to-six weeks, but babies start smiling in their sleep as soon as they’re born.

2. Smiling can require the use of up to 53 muscles, but some smiles only use 5 muscle movements.

3. There are 19 different types of smiles: UC-San Francisco researcher identified 19 types of smiles and put them into two categories: polite “social” smiles which engage fewer muscles, and sincere “felt” smiles that use more muscles on both sides of the face.

4. Your body immediately releases endorphins when you smile, even when you force it. Your body is more relaxed when you smile, which contributes to good health and a stronger immune system.

5. Smiles DO NOT create wrinkles! “Nasolabial folds” appear every time you smile. As you age, those happy-face grooves don’t fade away once you stop beaming, explains Dr Marc Glashofer, a New York-based dermatologist. But don’t blame your smile. The real culprit is your skin’s diminishing elasticity.
The biological changes affecting your skin’s rebound abilities are called “intrinsic aging”. These include breakdowns to the underlying structure of your skin due to factors like fat loss and muscle atrophy. Your genetics also affect how your skin holds up to years of smiling. “We know different ethnicities age differently,” says Dr Anthony Rossi, adding that your skin’s natural melanin concentrations and oil production also play a role in how quickly your smile grooves will start to leave their mark. Unfortunately, many of those variables are out of your hands.

World Animal Day was created in Berlin, Germany by Heinrich Zimmerman in 1925 to promote the status of all animals.
One of our core values is supporting individuals, causes, and organisations working hard to save endangered wildlife, conserve habitats, and educate the public on the importance of ecological balance and sustainability.
GET INVOLVED:
Feel free to leave a comment on how you are celebrating World Animal Day, your fun animal fact, or simply your favourite animal!

I absolutely love ecology and wildlife, and it is because of my innate fascination for the natural world that I don't have an all-time favourite animal - I simply cannot pick an all-time favourite, so here's a bunch of animals I love and find fascinating (in no particular order - let me know if you love these animals, too!):
- Whale Shark
- Binturong
- Pangolin
- Sea Turtles
- Amazonian Dart Frogs
- Manatees
- Manta Ray
- Shetland Pony
- Shire Horse
- Asian Short Clawed Otters
- Deaths Head Hawkmoth
- Leafcutter Ant
- Clownfish
- Greenland Shark
- Dumbo Octopus
- European Mole
- Starnosed Mole
- Ammonites
- Snails
Comment any cool facts you may have about these animals or your own favourite animals!

23/09/2022

When I was in secondary school, my peers and I helped to form our school's first club, where we were taught BSL in order to improve the social cohesion of the student body, as SEND students were often isolated from the wider student body. This was over a decade ago now, but I still remember- and sometimes use- some of the BSL I was taught.
I now use BSL in loud and crowded places because I struggle to hear what people are saying to me (my hearing has decreased over the years).
I am a massive proponent of making British Sign Language a mandatory part of the national curriculum, in order to improve accessibility within our communities and widen opportunities for BSL users. Those of us who can hear should be going the extra mile to improve accessibility.

How can you help?
- Know that not all sign languages are the same. Just like all other languages spoken across the world, there are fundamental differences between British Sign Language and American Sign Language (for example).

- Know that not all those who use sign language are deaf or hard of hearing. A wide variety of people use sign language to communicate. Never assume that if someone uses sign language, they won't understand what is said to them verbally.

- Learn some basic signs via YouTube or better yet, community-led classes. Not only will you learn how to communicate better, you can meet some great people through these programmes while doing something good for your community!

- Advocate for teaching sign language in schools, at every level! The more exposure to sign language, the more accessible we will make our world. Teaching children sign language from a young age improves other cognitive abilities, such as their vocabulary and memory retention (Ref: Learning Journals).

Hello World!
Thank you for visiting our page, we really appreciate you taking the time to check out our publication and our cause.
The Good News Emporium was born out of a need for more positivity in an otherwise unforgiving world. We want to break through the monotony of negativity peddled by the mainstream media every day. In each monthly issue, we will share a variety of stories from across the globe within five dedicated sections:
- Discovery (scientific & humanities): Exciting discoveries uncovered either in the field or in the lab!
- Politics/Law: Positive advancements made in politics and law which benefit the environment and our human rights,
- Business (including community initiatives): Local businesses run by awesome people with a cool story to tell,
- Art & Leisure: Everything from poetry to video game news!
- Worldly Experience (Travel): Local/cultural experiences which inspire wanderlust.
Additionally, we have a variety of front page tidbits for people to engage in:
- Message To The World: Submit a kind, interesting, funny, or otherwise positive affirmation/mantra/quote you live by.
- The People’s News corner: Maybe you've just had a new arrival in the family, you've got your first book published, or you've plucked up the courage to do something you've always wanted to do! Whatever your reason for celebrating is, big or small, we want to help you share it with the world!
- Photograph of the Month: One photograph submitted to us will be chosen to feature on the front page with a few words about the photographer and the story behind the photo, so if you've got a beautiful, interesting, or funny photograph you want to share with the world, please send it in!
