"Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said he plans to lower the number of low-wage, temporary foreign workers and permanent residents being let into Canada. Mr Trudeau made the announcement on Monday, on the second day of a cabinet retreat where his team is hammering out their autumn agenda.

It comes as Canada grapples with a rapidly growing population that economists say has put strain on housing and public services like healthcare. The vast majority of Canada’s population growth last year - about 97% - was driven by immigration, according to the federal statistics."

Prime Minister Trudeau announced the change after unemployment rose in Canada and the programme faced UN scrutiny.

"More than 70 people have been killed in four assaults amid several reported incidents of violence in Balochistan province in southwestern Pakistan, according to military and police officials. The country’s military said 14 soldiers and police, as well as 21 militants, were killed in fighting after the largest of the attacks, which targeted vehicles on a major highway in Bela, a town in Lasbela district.

In a separate attack in Musakhel district, local officials said at least 23 civilians were killed after attackers determined they were from Punjab, with 35 vehicles set ablaze. And in Kalat, 10 people were reported to have been killed – five police and five civilians – after a police post and a highway were attacked."

The Balochistan Liberation Army claims at least one of the attacks, with past similar incidents staged by them.

"Israeli strikes in the West Bank have killed at least nine people, according to Palestinian officials. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) have launched raids across the occupied West Bank and sealed off the city of Jenin.

Israeli forces surrounded the city, blocking off exit and entry points and access to hospitals, the governor of Jenin, Kamal Abu al Rub, said on Palestinian radio. The Israeli military confirmed it was operating in the West Bank cities of Jenin and Tulkarm."

Israel has launched raids across the West Bank. Elsewhere, in Gaza, overnight attacks in the city of Khan Younis killed at least 16 people.

"Surging waters have burst through a dam in eastern Sudan, wiping out at least 20 villages and leaving at least 30 people dead but probably many more, the UN has said, devastating a region already reeling from months of civil war.

Torrential rains caused floods that on Sunday overwhelmed the Arbaat dam, which is 25 miles (40km) north of Port Sudan, the de facto national capital and base for the government, diplomats, aid agencies and hundreds of thousands of displaced people."

"Gunmen armed with rocket-propelled grenades have ambushed a police convoy in eastern Punjab province, killing at least 11 officers and wounding seven others, authorities said.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack on Thursday in the Rahim Yar Khan district. The officers were ambushed while on patrol in a deserted area in search of robbers who operate in the region.

Punjabi police said the gunmen were probably robbers and not militants. The victims were taken to a nearby hospital. There has been a surge in violence and attacks by militants in Pakistan in recent years but such a high number of police casualties in a single incident is rare."

"The head of Israel’s security agency, Shin Bet, has warned the country’s leaders that Jewish terrorism in the West Bank is out of control and has become a serious threat to national security.

Bar’s letter focused on Jewish extremists known as the “hilltop youth”, violent militants who have been conducting a campaign of murder, arson and intimidation against Palestinians on the West Bank, aimed at driving them from their land, furthering the far right’s pursuit of complete annexation. "At least 12 Palestinians have been killed in an Israeli air strike on a school housing displaced people in Gaza City, the Hamas-run Civil Defence authority says.

"Opposition supporters have gathered across Venezuela to protest against Nicolas Maduro's disputed victory in last month's presidential election. Opposition leader María Corina Machado joined thousands of protesters in the capital, Caracas, and urged them not to be afraid.

Ms Machado, who had been in hiding after being accused of insurrection, said there was nothing above the voice of the people, and that the people had spoken. Police and the army were deployed in force as supporters of Mr Maduro also held a demonstration."

"An Israeli air strike in southern Lebanon has killed at least 10 people, Lebanon’s Ministry of Health has said, as the Israeli military reported hitting a Hezbollah weapons storage facility.

The death toll from the strike in the Nabatieh area included “a woman and her two children” and left five other people wounded, two critically, the ministry said in a statement on Saturday, adding that a residential building was hit."

"At least one Palestinian has been killed after dozens of Israeli settlers, some wearing masks, attacked a village in the occupied West Bank. Video on social media showed cars and houses on fire in Jit, near the city of Nablus. Israel's military said petrol bombs and rocks were thrown at buildings and vehicles and that it used "riot dispersal means" to end the violence."

Paetongtarn, 37, will be the youngest prime minister to lead the country. Her appointment on Friday followed 24 hours of frantic negotiations triggered by a court ruling that ousted the former prime minister Srettha Thavisin.

She is the youngest of three children born to the divisive political heavyweight Thaksin Shinawatra. Her father was ousted in a coup in 2006, but remains hugely influential.
