Greater Govanhill: Embrace and Support Diverse Voices in the Media
As a fitting end to Source, we wanted to introduce an independent community magazine that is presenting news at the hyper-local level - Greater Govanhill magazine.
We spoke to Editor-in-Chief Rhiannon J Davies about her decision to keep the magazine hyper-local; how community engagement can lead to civic engagement; and why diversity is important in the media.
Greater Govanhill is a free magazine, which is available in most Govanhill cafes and hairdressers, online, or by post if you become a supporting member.
Media like this will not continue to exist without financial support.
Calls for Eviction Ban to Be Extended as Covid Uncertainty Continues
As the majority of Scotland moves out of tier 3, the temporary eviction ban has lifted, and campaigners are anticipating a wave of evictions despite not being clear of the pandemic.
"Clearly, there may be other virus mutations ahead of us, and as we know, easing out of lockdown is subject to the need to return to tougher rules to deal with infection spikes.
Having a cliff-edge end to the temporary eviction ban linked to levels 3 and 4 seems short-sighted when the virus is so capricious. Imagine you are evicted from your home on a Friday, then lockdown goes back up to level 3 or 4 on the Monday. Where is the public health protection rationale in that?" - Mike Dailly, solicitor advocate at Govan Law Centre.
Scotland Must Ban Conversion Therapy Now If It's Not to Be Left Behind.
Trigger Warning: mention of suicide.
The Queen announced in her speech yesterday the UK government's plans to move forward with the ban on conversion therapy.
“Scotland cannot afford to be left behind in banning these abhorrent practices, which have no place in our society. The Scottish Government must act as soon as possible to bring about a comprehensive and final ban on Conversion Therapy.” - Sophie Duncan, End Conversion Therapy Scotland.
