Hello all!
I have put together a short video to mark a little bit of my local history from my home village of Drumnadrochit and its surrounding area.
It has been over 70 years since John Rhodes Cobb made his ill-fated world water speed record attempt on Loch Ness on the 29th of September 1952.
To mark this anniversary I captured parts of the events held by the Glen Urquhart Heritage Group to honour his memory and his impact on my local community.
An exhibition was held on the 30th of September and the 1st of October 2022 to mark this occasion.

After 5 years of development, production and ex*****on, my full documentary of MS, Mexico & Me: Aileen's Story is now complete! ๐
This doc started as my final project at University ( Edinburgh Napier University ) and has turned into a personal project ever since.
My crew and I were very lucky to return to the Isle of Lewis to visit Aileen and Simon just before the lockdown kicked off in 2020.
The documentary now has a full composition of music that was written and recorded by the excellent and wonderfully talented David R Simpson ๐ถ

HSCT is the stem cell treatment which Aileen underwent to treat her MS when she went to Mexico and this piece is dedicated to raising awareness of this and trying to make it more readily available in Scotland and the rest of the UK.

Please check out the sequel to my award-winning documentary which follows Aileen 2 years after her stem cell treatment for MS. Thank you to all of my wonderful cast and crew! Hello! Here is the trailer for โThrough Expressionโ.
This is a video which I edited that follows three groups of people practicing self-expression and shows the surprising ways in which creativity helps them.
For some, art groups can be a way to socialise and help with loneliness. For others, art and poetry can be a way of therapy to ease PTSD symptoms or improve life with dementia.

This online festival curtesy of Lift-Off Film Festival screens a variety of films on Vimeo which are all actually open to accepting public votes! The winner will be screened at the upcoming Lift-Off festival ๐ฝ

There was a special screening of โMS, Mexico & Me: Aileenโs Storyโ at the Santander Universities grant resigning event at Edinburgh Napier University yesterday.
I was very lucky to have been awarded the grant last year which went towards the funding of the documentary including travel for Mexico and more.

I had my first ever Q&A session for MS, Mexico & Me: Aileen's Story at the Santander Universities grant resigning event at Edinburgh Napier University yesterday.
I talked about how the project came to life, getting in touch and meeting Aileen for the first time and how the grant which I received helped with the documentary.

I am very pleased to say that MS, Mexico & Me: Aileen's Story has been selected to be screened at the Hebrides International Film Festival!
I donโt think there could be a festival that was more appropriate than this as it will be screened in several venues across the islands including: rural Lewis(Bernera), Harris, Uist and Barra.
The festival runs from the 19th to the 22nd of September 2018 so if you live in any of these areas I would highly recommend going as they will also be showing international feature documentaries, dramas and short films which link to the theme of islands, environments and remote communities.

This is an online interternational festival and I am amazed and very proud about this! ๐
Sharing Aileen's Story with a wider audience continues to raise awareness of MS and HSCT in a visual format. ๐ Well done to everyone involved!

Black Thistle Media is a video production company based in Glasgow.
Founded in May 2017, Black Thistle Media was born as the internet presence for Calum Menzies video production output.
Since then he has made a variety of video's including the award-winning "MS, Mexico & Me: Aileen's Story". A documentary about a woman from the Isle of Lewis with Multiple Sclerosis who fundraised to get Stem Cell Treatment in Mexico.
As part of this he went to Mexico in February 2018 to capture a part of the production over there.
He has also worked to create video content with the RNLI, The Captain David Seath Memorial Fund, several musicians, actors, friends and animals.
About Calum
Born in the Highlands of Scotland, as a youngster Calum began making videos as a hobby. His love of television and films made him study an HND course, Creative Industries: TV at North East Scotland College in Aberdeen. This allowed him to learn and refine the many skills required in the industry and to specialise in Camera and Editing through work on various projects.
He then graduated with a BA (Hons) in Television at Edinburgh Napier University. During his studies he worked with others on Short Films, Music Videos, Documentaries and many more.
In 2016 when as D.O.P he helped produce an award-winning short film called "Sam" when working at the BFI Film Academy in Aberdeen. One of his proudest moments was when โSamโ won the "Best Live Action, 13-19 years" Film at the Scottish Youth Film Festival.
By working with a variety of people on several projects he has had the pleasure of telling the stories of ordinary yet remarkable people.
