"This week, we listened to three artists with ties to a unique Detroit-based music collective/record label, known as Underflow Records, including Quells, Big Mess, and Of House.

Adam Fitzgerald records a blend of indie rock, shoegaze, and dream pop under the moniker of Quells, and we featured that band’s latest single, “Ice Temple,” on MI Local. It was Fitzgerald who, several years ago, first founded Underflow Records as a collective that could support and celebrate a variety of independent artists around the metro area music scene, but when he first relocated to Edinburgh for a few years — then later to Colorado — he began inviting more and more artists that he met along the way to join the Underflow family, turning into an international label.

Underflow Records’ raison d’être is ultimately to show “a love for under-appreciated artists who deserve more attention,” and that includes Big Mess, a five-piece band born out of the Livonia suburbs that’s been together for more than a decade, featuring longtime friends and musicians Scott Allen, Rob Carden, Pat Carden, and Mike Carden, with Scott’s father Brad joining earlier this year. Big Mess makes a cinematic composite of swooning, contemplative baroque-pop, and we heard “‘I Am Loved’ By The Losers” from their latest album …from Sheldon Hall to Wonderland Mall.

Underflow has several other artists who have recently released new music, or are on the cusp of doing so, including Pesky Kid, almost the band and more."

"Underflow Records artists Quells (Adam Fitzgerald) & Pesky Kid (Benjamin Champagne) recently returned over the summer with their collabrative single “Real Love”.

The groovy track is about the “healing & the hurting involved with real love” and blends dance rock, pop, and r & b with a smooth summer romantic feeling in the air that calls to mind some of the early days of Chromeo. This is the sort of track that delivers a blend of melancholy that feels like the sort of summer nights we held onto desperately enjoying them as much as we are afraid that they would slip away.

The music video for “Real Love” was filmed in Detroit’s Eastern Market and directed by Shane R. Hillier, starring Fitzgerald, Champagne, and two dancers – Ernesto and Cindy.

Big Mess is a project born from the enduring friendship of musicians who have been playing together on and off since 2008. The band is composed of high school friends Scott Allen, Brad Allen, Rob Carden, Pat Carden, and Mike Carden, making it a tight-knit group that thrives on their shared history and musical chemistry. Known for their seamless collaboration, the band handles every aspect of their music themselves, from recording to engineering, creating a truly self-contained musical experience.

While Scott Robert Allen is best known for his work in Thunderbirds Are Now!, a band that brought Detroit’s experimental rock scene to the world stage, Big Mess showcases a different side of his musical evolution. Moving beyond the genre-defying sounds of his solo project Scoffs, where he honed intricate arrangements and sincere vocals, Big Mess blends all these influences into a cohesive sound. Their music echoes the experimental folk rock pop traditions of Buffalo Springfield, the Beach Boys, Wilco, and Damon Albarn, with songs that range from the bombastic to the intimately stripped-down.

Their third album, “...From Sheldon Hall to Wonderland Mall,” released worldwide on September 3rd, 2024, through Underflow Records, is a tongue-in-cheek homage to their hometown of Livonia, Michigan. The album’s nine tracks explore themes of art, music, love, and loss, all with a distinctive flair that balances humor with heartfelt emotion. Big Mess invites listeners to journey through urban decay, nostalgic suburbs, and quirky adventures, offering a sound that is both hilariously humble and deeply sincere, reminiscent of the spirit of Harry Nilsson.
