This ‘Citizenship Education’ will enable them to acquire the correct understanding and greater awareness of democracy. Thus creating a spirit of responsible participation to hopefully promote an effective democratic society in Sierra Leone.
2. The Betrayal of a Nation
This is a historical account of the emergence of a nation-state. It explores her struggle in her formation during British colonial campaigns. The divide and rule policies of the colonialist who had transported a rebellious group to settle in the nation state by according them an elite status to the demise of the early settlers. The appeasement by the colonialist changed the landscape of the nation-state and hostilities began against the new comers. The struggles brought the inevitable - peace, as the factions involved in the hostilities decided that peace would bring about unity and understanding. This was partially achieved and it brought about the struggles for independence from the colonialist. The joys of independence faded away as soon as it was achieved. Divisions and distrust brought the country to see many civil upheavals that affected many innocent and unarmed populace. A new kind of elite came in and submerged the social, economic, cultural and political structures that had brought the unity and independence into the abyss. A percent of the populace created a world that embarked on monopolising all the fabrics of socio-economic, culture and politics. The book will explore reason and present an unbiased narrative to show how the few, entrusted and empowered by the votes of the many betrayed these trusts.
3. The Sierra Leone Trade Union History -1930–2015: Industrial Relations in a Developing Country
A combined autobiographical and research study showing the problems of trying to assert a union position in a State determined not to recognise it. The experiences of the strikes of 1977 and 1981 will add an overall historical picture depicting the advances and setbacks for the labour movement in Sierra Leone. The aim of the publication is to offer an account both as a contribution to the knowledge of the Sierra Leonean situation and to comparative study of industrial relations in other developing countries. CWEP is a business and will make financial benefits from its undertakings in the publishing and rare book vendor business. Another area CWEP is exploring is to seek agreements with holders of book rights to numerous African publications that are out of print. CWEP aim to vigorously create a market for these rare prints.

A FRIEND OF OVER 30 YEARS

Today 14 August 2024, I celebrate the birthday of a dear friend of over three decades. True friendship is never smooth! I have fought with Esther Hutchinson on countless occasions! The interests - honesty - by both is what kept us so tight. She is naturally intelligent and I owe her a lot. She does not mince her words and will tell me, to my face, when I am doing or not doing the right thing.

Her wisdom is exceptional! Today, she advances in the sequence of the chronological assessment of ageing - she is plus 1 today and I am wishing her a happy birthday and wishes of more healthy birthdays to come!

Esther, you are a treasure, no wonder I continue to be that friend that fights and comes back to fight again and again!

More blessings and more wisdom! Amen 🙏🏾

*EXPOSING THE INHUMANE EXPLOITATION BY THE US INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT FINANCE CORPORATION IN SIERRA LEONE*

*by Mahmud Tim Kargbo*

According to criminal psychologists, the thrill of stealing often stems from a sense of invincibility, the ability to commit theft without fear of detection. However, when the victims become aware of the crime, the pleasure derived from criminal activities diminishes significantly. This concept sheds light on the exploitative practices of entities like the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), who have been accused of bleeding Sierra Leone dry with well-inflated loans that burden the suffering majority (https://www.dfc.gov/media/press-releases/dfc-approves-more-3-billion-across-priority-sectors-third-quarterfy23, https://www.enr.com/articles/58828-us-approves-412m-in-financing-for-126-mw-sierra-leone-natural-gas-power-plant).

While Sierra Leone's major political parties were embroiled in allegations of election malpractice, neocolonialist and imperialist organisations, including the DFC, were busy imposing inflated loans on projects such as the Lungi International Airport and the cycle gas-to-gas thermal power plant. These actions highlight a disturbing trend of exploitation and profiteering at the expense of the civilian population, with dire consequences for the country's social and economic well-being.

The continuation of these exploitative practices raises questions about the motivations of those involved. What joy can these individuals possibly derive from their continued criminality, knowing that their actions are causing great suffering and injury to the people of Sierra Leone? The deliberate undertaking of well-inflated contracts, driven by self-aggrandisement and greed, points to a high level of criminality and exploitation at the expense of the vulnerable civilian population.

The impact of these well-inflated contracts on the civilian population of Sierra Leone is devastating. The deprivation of essential services, deterioration of living conditions, and dehumanisation of the population are direct consequences of these well inflated loans. The deliberate exploitation and corruption embedded in these contracts perpetuate cycles of poverty, inequality, and suffering among the most vulnerable in society.

The inhumane nature of these exploitative practices financed by the DFC is glaring and evident in the human suffering, social unrest, and violence that ensue. From deaths to forced displacements, mental and physical torture, and sexual exploitation, the consequences of large scale corruption in these inflated contracts are a stark reflection of the inhumanity and disregard for human rights exhibited by those involved.

It is essential to hold accountable those responsible for these inhumane practices and to implement measures to prevent further exploitation of the vulnerable populations in Sierra Leone. The actions of the DFC and other neocolonialist organisations that engage in such inhumane practices must be exposed and condemned. It is time to put an end to the exploitation and corruption that have plagued Sierra Leone and to strive for a more just, equitable, and humane society for all its citizens.

The inhumane exploitation by the US International Development Finance Corporation and other neocolonialist entities in Sierra Leone underscores the urgent need for transparency, accountability, and ethical practices in international development financing. The suffering majority in Sierra Leone deserve justice, dignity, and a future free from exploitation and corruption. Let us stand together to demand accountability and fight against the inhumanity of corrupt practices that perpetuate suffering and injustice in our society.

A COMMUNITY AT A CROSSROADS: THE COMPLEX DYNAMICS OF DEVELOPMENT IN MARAMPA CHIEFDOM
By Chez Winakabs for Marampa Times

On 29 April 2023, President Julius Maada Bio handed over a cheque for $1.7 million to the people of Marampa and Marfoki Chiefdoms. This sum, representing 1% of the gross sales of iron ore exported by Marampa Mines Limited (MML), was paid into the Community Development Committee (CDC) account. The ceremony was attended by a large crowd from both chiefdoms, alongside various state stakeholders, marking a significant moment of triumph and potential for local development.

However, beneath the surface of this celebratory occasion lies a simmering tension. The CDC, elected by the people to manage these funds, faces scepticism and distrust from MML’s directors and managers. This has led to confusion and frustration among the community members, raising critical questions about the relationship between the company and the local leadership.

THE UNDERMINING OF LOCAL LEADERSHIP

One of the most glaring issues is MML’s apparent lack of confidence in the CDC’s ability to manage the funds effectively. This scepticism undermines the very foundation of local governance and raises a troubling question: Why was the CDC elected if their competence is now being doubted by the very entity that provided the funds? The people of Marampa and Marfoki Chiefdoms deserve clarity and respect from MML regarding their elected representatives.

LACK OF TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY

MML’s reluctance to disclose the gross sales figures for the iron ore exported in 2022 further fuels distrust. The community has a right to understand the basis for the $1.7 million allocation, yet their inquiries have been met with silence. This lack of transparency contradicts the principles of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and good governance that MML should be upholding.
Moreover, the delays in instalment payments to contractors working on community projects like the Town Hall and Clock Tower are another point of contention. These projects are vital for local development, and any hindrance in their progress directly impacts the community’s welfare. MML’s failure to facilitate timely payments suggests a deeper issue in their engagement with local development initiatives.

THE ROLE OF CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

MML’s CSR efforts should extend beyond financial contributions. True CSR involves active participation in the socio-economic upliftment of the host community, fostering trust, and building sustainable relationships. MML must realise that a good neighbour is one who collaborates and supports, not one who controls and dictates. The company’s current approach is perceived as paternalistic, hindering the community’s autonomy and self-determination.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR MOVING FORWARD

To mend this fractured relationship, MML must adopt a more inclusive and cooperative stance. Here are some recommendations:
1. Transparent Communication: MML should provide clear and detailed reports on the financials related to iron ore sales and the allocation of community funds. Transparency is key to building trust.
2. Support and Empowerment: Instead of undermining the CDC, MML should focus on empowering them through capacity-building initiatives. This can include training sessions on financial management and project implementation.
3. Collaborative Planning: Engage the community in planning and decision-making processes for development projects. MML cannot fully understand the community’s needs without consulting them directly.
4. Timely Payments: Ensure that all contractual obligations, especially payments to contractors, are met promptly to avoid delays in development projects.
5. Monitoring and Evaluation Committee: Establish a joint committee comprising MML representatives, CDC members, and community leaders to monitor and evaluate the progress of funded projects. This committee can provide regular updates to the community, ensuring accountability.

UNANSWERED APPEALS TO THE PRESIDENCY

In light of these challenges, I have personally taken steps to address these issues at the highest level. I have written more than two Open Letters to President Julius Maada Bio, appealing for his intervention in the slow pace of implementation and disbursement of the community development funds. Despite these efforts, there has been little to no response from the President's office. This silence only exacerbates the community's frustrations and delays the much-needed development in Marampa Chiefdom. The people are left questioning why their concerns seem to fall on deaf ears, especially when the funds have already been presented with much fanfare. It is crucial for the President to take decisive action to ensure that the allocated funds are utilised effectively and that the community's development needs are met promptly.

The potential for Marampa and Marfoki Chiefdoms to flourish through the funds provided by MML is immense. However, this potential can only be realised through mutual respect, transparency, and collaboration. MML must shift from a position of control to one of partnership, recognising the value and capabilities of the community and its leaders. By doing so, they will not only contribute to the socio-economic development of the chiefdoms but also foster a legacy of trust and cooperation.

The concerns raised by the community are valid and must be addressed with urgency and sincerity. MML’s future in Marampa Chiefdom hinges on their ability to adapt and engage positively with the community. It is time for MML to demonstrate their commitment to being not just a corporate entity, but a true partner in development.

TIME REMAINS TIME

Time remains time while we burn calories and cells deteriorate. God be praised as we continue the journey. One thing though, I do not believe in the chronological assessment of ageing.

📷: Policemen es**rt Pakistan's former Prime Minister Imran Khan as he arrives at the high court in Islamabad, May 12, 2023.

👉 Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was granted bail Friday by the Islamabad High Court, after his arrest on graft charges this week sparked deadly clashes before being declared illegal.

Khan was manhandled into detention by paramilitary troops at the court on Tuesday, but the Supreme Court later declared the arrest unlawful and demanded the process be "backtracked."

On Friday, after arriving back at the Islamabad High Court in a secure convoy and walking into the building flanked by dozens of police and paramilitaries, he was granted bail.

"The court has granted Imran Khan a two-week interim bail and has directed the authorities not to arrest him in the [graft] case," Khan's lawyer Khawaja Harris told reporters afterwards.

PTI lawyers gathered in front of the court ahead of the hearing shouted, "Khan your devotees are countless" and "the lawyers are alive," as the ousted leader raised a single fist above his head.

But the legal saga seems far from over.

Supreme Court on Thursday declared arrest "invalid and unlawful," ordering Khan to be immediately released

MARAMPA MINES LIMITED: NO NEGLECTING LIABILITIES

It is not ethical or legal for a company to change its name to avoid or neglect the liabilities of the old company.
When a company changes its name, it is still the same legal entity with the same obligations and liabilities. The company cannot simply shed its responsibilities by changing its name. Attempting to do so is often referred to as "fraudulent conveyance" or "fraudulent transfer," and is illegal in many jurisdictions.

Furthermore, neglecting the liabilities of the old company can harm stakeholders such as employees, customers, suppliers, and creditors, who may be left with unpaid debts or damages. It can also create an unfair advantage for the company, which can harm competition and the overall market.

In general, it is important for companies to act ethically and responsibly and fulfill their obligations and liabilities, even if it requires making difficult decisions or facing financial challenges.

Companies that seek to avoid or neglect their responsibilities can face legal and reputational consequences, and may ultimately harm their long-term viability and success.
