Al and Nigel, had run smaller studios from home. In light of the the growing amount of prestigious work that was coming their way, the obvious solution was to open a dedicated facility. The blend of Al’s Rock/Classical influence with Nigel’s Pop/Jazz skills meant that from day one, Shabbey Road Studios was in high demand. Projects were often led by one person but completed as a partnership, both for live and studio projects. The philosophy of imparting a musical ‘identity’ was, and still is, one of the Shabbey Road trademarks. Projects were not just recorded, but rather steered and shaped. Musical arrangements are a distinctive part of the Shabbey Road sound. Full orchestral scores and Big Band charts do not appear ‘by accident’. Each note needs to be crafted, and then performed by hand-picked musicians, to the highest standard. Nothing less will suffice. Although the studio does not specialise in any one area, the last few years have seen a large increase in songwriters. Some, like Ian Mitchard, and Darren Parry, will come and complete a song in a few hours. Others like Dan and Laura Curtis will work on large projects over months. This prompted the enlistment of Rob Sherwood, a brilliant young guitar/bass/piano/vocalist, and a talented arranger. Shabbey Road Studios also has the resources of The-E-Spot, a graphic design company under Ceri Darknell, and and is shortly to be launching Grownup-Records, a forward looking record company.
