Your work Christmas party: make it memorable for the right reasons

To Britain’s office staff, the annual work Christmas party is a chance to eat, drink, be merry… and, in some cases, behave inappropriately.

It’s OK for your guys to let their hair down for a bit. It’s heartening to see people relaxing and bonding over a mince pie.

But – and we don’t want to dampen the Christmas spirit too much here – mixing alcohol, a party atmosphere and a generous splash of inhibition doesn’t always make for an evening of measured fun.

If things do get out of hand, our old friends ‘gross misconduct’ and ‘disciplinary action’ can make two pretty unwelcome party guests.

Work Christmas party dos and don’ts

10 Tips to make your Christmas Party a success

Christmas party season is almost upon us, so if you’re planning this year’s festivities, here are 10 tips to ensure your Christmas party is a roaring success. Make the most of the most wonderful time of year by planning a party that your guests will remember for years to come.

1. Plan Well In Advance
Planning as far ahead as possible is always advisable. It allows you to secure the venue you want and get good deals on food and drink. Your stress levels will also be dramatically lower. However, if you are planning later, just follow some of these tips and you’ll be fine.

2. Budget For The Party
Ensure that there is ample money available for Christmas office party expenses in your annual budgeting process. Carve out money to cover the cost of things like, venue, food, drinks, invitations, activities, decorations, gifts and transportation.

3. Choose The Perfect Venue
The old saying location, location, location – is so true. Think about the venue you want to use for your party and choose it carefully. Make sure it provides the vibe, resources and location that will make your party a success. For instance, a venue in the hip part of town that has exposure to other Christmas festivities will surely set the tone and atmosphere for your party

4. Prepare the menu.
You don’t want your employees to remember this year’s office Christmas party as “the one with the terrible food.” So, make sure to coordinate with the caterer and pick a menu that everyone will appreciate. Consider the different food preferences of your employees. Ask around if there’s anyone who needs kosher or halal meat? Are there any vegetarians in the office? Make sure there’s something for everyone (aside from the wine, of course). For larger groups, a buffet would be ideal, as this enables people to eat at their own pace and come back for seconds. Drinks will be flowing, and people tend to get hungry again after drinking. You don’t want your employees heading out to another bar or restaurant just because you ran out of food.

5. Include Family
There are several advantages to including an employee’s family at the annual Christmas party. First it will make spouses and significant others feel like they are included. This simple gesture not only speaks to family members but ensures employees feel valued. Secondly, the mere presence of family members will help to minimize those inappropriate co-worker relationships.

6. Have a Christmas party theme.
Here’s your chance to get creative. Pick a theme that ties everything together, whether that’s ghosts of Christmas past or the elves of Christmas future. A theme helps boost the excitement for the party. You can even ask your employees to come in costume. If you chose a winter wonderland or white Christmas theme, then ask your employees to come in white! Perhaps you can also provide novelty hats or pins at the entrance which employees can wear during the event.

7. Speak to everyone
Use this as an opportunity to catch up with your team and those people you always say hi to in the lift. It’s a great way to network and build relationships you wouldn’t usually have the chance to.

8. Make it a social media free zone
Put your phone away for the night. You don’t know what you might put on social media and whether it’s good or bad, you don’t want to be embarrassed in the morning.

9. Don’t talk about work
You’ve been discussing work all week, it’s a cardinal rule, a Christmas party is a work-free zone! a buzz that will have everyone wishing they could win something next year.

10. Have an amazing time!
Finally, have a good time and allow yourself to let your hair down. You’ve worked hard all year so enjoy it

Curious Kitchen Restaurant Review, Aztec West Hotel

Nestled inside the upscale Aztec West Hotel, the Curious Kitchen is a hidden gem of a spot for a Sunday lunch just outside of Bristol. Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly and shown to our table in the inviting, light-filled dining space with a high-vaulted ceiling. There was a buzzy atmosphere, with families and couples tucking into delicious-looking food, and we were looking forward to a hearty three-course meal.

A glass of sparkling wine (included in the price) arrived swiftly at our table, which we enjoyed while perusing the menu. To start, I enjoyed hot smoked salmon and prawn Marie Rose on crisp gem lettuce, with fresh tomato and cucumber. My dining partner chose the heritage tomato and mozzarella salad with rocket, balsamic dressing, and basil – which was wonderfully light and fresh.

For mains, of course we couldn't resist a roast – I savoured 16-hour roasted rare beef (cooked to perfection, and the highlight of the meal for me) drizzled with a rich jus gras. My partner plumped for the roast of the day, which was delicious glazed gammon ham with herby parsley sauce. We also piled our plates high with an impressive array of trimmings: triple-cooked roast potatoes, creamy cauliflower and broccoli cheese, tangy braised red cabbage, pigs in blankets, buttery peas, and an enormous Yorkshire pudding that was crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Perfection.

Having clocked the dessert table as soon as we walked in, we couldn’t wait for our third course. My raspberry and gin cheesecake was indulgent yet light, while my partner's lemon meringue pie was bright and zesty. He also added a helping of salted caramel profiteroles, which were seriously decadent. Next time, we're definitely going to try the chocolate fountain with toasted marshmallows and strawberries.

Throughout our meal, the service we received was excellent; the head chef was even on-hand to talk us through the options and make suggestions. All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our Sunday roast at the Curious Kitchen and are already looking forward to our next visit.

Dine in style whilst accompanied with by fantastic live music on the first Sunday of every month ! The next dates to book this fabulous Sunday roast experience are Sunday 3rd August and 1st September – Get booking.

Top Tips on organising a corporate dinner event

Negotiate.
Especially if your event is not happening on a peak date, such as a Thursday. Proactive venues will offer you a discount for a Monday & Tuesday, others will not.

Put your table plan in alphabetical order, surname first!
Ideally table plans will be in alphabetical order. We strongly suggest avoiding name place cards on the table. Scanning for your table in a sea of 400 names can be very time consuming.

Think about tables!
Round tables of 5ft or 5ft 6in are the best for social talking. Any larger than this and it is difficult to engage with everyone at the table.

Don’t block heads with the wrong shape table centres.
These should not act as a block across the table. Again this makes it easy for guests to chat with those around the table. Most good florists or light installers will appreciate this.

Keep your guests entertained.
Having some form of entertainment during dinner can lift the room and give it a shot of energy. Dance acts, opera singers, west end performers etc all work; it really depends on your audience.
