The staff and trustees of KWMC offer our deepest sympathy to the Royal Family at this time of national mourning. Seven decades of service is an incredible achievement. Queen Elizabeth II personified dignity and service in public life. Knowle West lad George Gallop captured Her Majesty's visits to Bristol through those years as The Bristol Evening Post photographer. We remember Her Majesty through his archive, which he entrusted to Knowle West Media Centre: shorturl.at/jOX56.

For , we would love to showcase our latest powerhouse mentor & trainee combo; photographers, Charley (Mentor) and Angela (Trainee). Our trainee scheme brings together emerging creatives and established artists to collaborate on Eight’s commissions.

This is what Angela had to say about the experience of being a trainee on a photography project with Eight:

“Photography, for me, is a way of capturing feelings, movements, and textures. I suggest these words in their vaguest and broadest sense purposefully. My motivations arise from the brevity of life, the interactions we hold are so fleeting and meaningful that I want to capture even just a sliver of them whenever possible.

With Eight I spectated the growth of a group of young adults and was given the opportunity to visually record it. From the Future Legacy Project I gained a better perspective on the generations that have grown after my own, as well as their ambitions and awareness of the society we are in. I gained greater experience of working in a welcoming, diverse, and female-led team; something which the creative industry vehemently lacks.

Working with a mentor was priceless. Charley welcomed me into the space with enthusiasm and care. She never made me feel like I was invading, misplaced, or anything other than her equal. Charley also took the time to help me understand the benefits of shooting in RAW and took me step by step through the post-production of the files as well. This has changed the way I take photos completely, and I thank her endlessly for it. I would do this for the rest of my life. I hope to do this for the rest of my life”.

We champion female creatives all year round. If you’re looking to get involved, please introduce yourself by emailing [email protected].

We are excited to share the next live video from our Soundwave: Sessions series...

Listen to Jess Duck’s piece “Remote Xianggelia”, composed by Zhang Nan, that she completed for her Grade 8 Piano Exam in December of 2020.

Jess took inspiration for this work from her love of Chinese music to form this incredible piece, that is a true testament to 11 years of practising her craft. She aims to become a professional pianist in the future and we wish her all the best in her endeavours.

Check out her performance and let us know what you think in the comments!

Ella is the Emerging Creatives Assistant here at Eight Creative Agency!

After graduating from Westminster Film School, Ella was selected by BBC Arts New Creatives to write and direct a short dance film. As an emerging creative themself, Ella has joined the Eight team to help nourish the existing trainee scheme. Ella also grew up in Knowle so is really happy to be involved in the community they were raised in.

They are passionate about ensuring accessibility in the creative sector, with an emphasis on neurodivergent and LGBTQIA+ communities.

Ella works alongside Stephanie on the Eight’s traineeship scheme. So, get in touch if you’re an Emerging Creative with an interest in getting involved with Eight and sharing your skills.

Outside of work, Ella loves video games they probably should have grown out of years ago (Animal Crossing) and browsing the latest skincare trends.

Meet Rediat, one of our talented freelance Animators!

We first met Rediat on a filmmaking programme at Knowle West Media Centre which was all about supporting women looking to make a career in film and TV.

We asked Rediat to share her experience about working with us at Eight as a freelance Animator...

"What I love about working with Eight is that all the projects I've been involved in are on topics that are important to me. They are community-based, positive, inspiring.”

Rediat also loves supporting and nurturing young people, she works on her own creative projects and runs animation workshops here in the UK and Ethiopia. Rediat believes that “young people are the most important part of our modern community and it would be a privilege to inspire, support and put a positive influence in their journey.” 🌎

Rediat creates fantastic animations and we are looking forward to collaborating on the next project!

“I use animation as a tool to express myself and to be able to do the things I can't do in real life. The more I do it the more I realise how powerful it is. “🖌

We have recently finished an Animation for The University of Bristol's Centre for Academic Primary Care (CAPC) which is all about bringing the community together with researchers to help improve Primary Care for all!

We loved the ethos of this project and an Animation is a brilliant way to engage with their audience and to encapsulate just who CAPC are. Everyone's healthcare experiences are different, so it’s important for people to have their say when it comes to research and making changes.

We really enjoyed working with one of our trusted Animators, Rediat on this project, whose ideas are always engaging, inclusive and clear. Also, a big shout out to Holly for the brilliant voice over!

Get in touch if an animation is what your project is missing!

Meet Stephanie 👋

Stephanie is the Producer here at Eight Creative Agency!

She will be the first person to greet you if you are looking to team up with Eight on an exciting new project or an Emerging Creative with an interest in getting involved with Eight and sharing your skills.

Stephanie has been supporting Eights Trainees and Mentors on commissions for 3 years now, and loves building connections with emerging creatives, nurturing and supporting them as they grow within the creative industry.

She supports Eight’s trainees and mentors throughout all of the commissions and works alongside clients to craft and tell their story!

After graduating from Cardiff School of Art and Design, Stephanie led art workshops and craft sessions for people living with a Dementia. Since then, she has become a certified coach to strengthen her skills at supporting, listening to, and empowering the creatives she works with.

With a background in Art and Design and the ability to connect with people to develop new skills, Stephanie is committed to supporting the next generation of creatives on their journey.

Outside of this Stephanie is a dedicated Yoga student and yoga studio helper, with a new found love of reading fiction and unapologetically watches her favourite TV shows over and over and over again.

We had an excellent time last week taking photos for the SS Great Britain.

The 'Opening Up' project that we took part in involved bringing in a range of emerging photographers and give them a platform to interpret the historic ship in their own way.

Each photographer took their own different approach to the project which is looking to create a real visual medley at the exhibition in late July.

Image 1: A wide photo from the reverse of the SS Great Britain. It has a black hull, gold decoration and is flying a large collection of international flags up the rigging.

Image 2: In a board room, a group of photographers holding cameras are discussing photographs laid out on the table in front of them.

Image 3: A young woman is standing at the end of a thin wooden corridor of beds. The beds are from the living quarters of an old boat and a candle-lit lamp shines brightly in the foreground. The woman is holding a DSLR camera and looking at it.

Image 4: A young woman is holding a DSLR camera up to her face whilst taking a close-up photo of glassware in front of her. Behind her are velvet red benches and long dinner tables.

Image 5: A young man is holding a DSLR camera at a ninety degree angle and looking into the viewfinder. He wears a cap and hoody.

Image 6: A young woman is holding a DSLR camera up above her head. She wears a blue face mask and glasses. She is in an old-time kitchen with dozens of dated pots and pans hanging behind her underneath a warm lamp.

We're going to start highlighting the creatives that make us proud to share our work far and wide ❤️

We want to share not only the work they do but WHY they do it, as the creative industries are about enjoying the journey as opposed to getting to a destination.

This week in our , we're looking at one of our mentor creatives, Jonathon , and why he does what he does:

"Every single filming day is different, and there’s a fresh creative challenge each time I’ve got a camera in my hands.

I love meeting interesting people with something to say, and working out how best to tell their stories in a visually compelling way"
