Exploding Appendix

Exploding Appendix Fortnightly Art & Research Group. On Zoom * Online magazine * Podcast * Movie Production
We seek to melt and meld, mince and mash, flip and fuse.

Exploding Appendix is the subsidiary remnants of a philosophical masterpiece. Part wasteland of once refined, part architecture built of dismembered pieces. Exploding Appendix uses cultural fragments and artistic expressions to explore philosophical, political, and cultural ideas. Bursting through your intestinal tract, Exploding Appendix offers an online platform combining essays, articles, web s

hows, podcasts, photography, comics, and other art pieces to provide a multimedia rupture to your pleasant morning stroll. We hold a suspicious distaste for the etiquette of any shade. We like our art brewed in the murky sewers of scandal and controversy; our theory was born out of a disregard for tradition. We seek to bring the most unexpected together in a feverish gourmet of irreverence. We like our culture to be challenging and unexpected. Whether it is dark and macabre, strange and absurd, insightful and thought-provoking, or just plain mesmerizing, we like artistry that doesn’t exactly do what it said on the tin. We like our politics to be equally challenging. We would like to imagine a future without victims or parasites, where the emancipation of all grounds the fearless invention of tomorrow. Yet we will hold no fe**sh over which path will take us there. We seek to use thoughts, theories, traditions, and ideas like an experimental chef concocting the most unexpected cuisine. No tradition is sacred. All traditions will be ours.

🥸It’s Q&A time🥸

We hope you are having a great summer so far! As we prepare for the end of the year at EA we wanted to reintroduce ourselves and give you the opportunity to ask any questions about who we are, our sessions and projects or anything else that is popping in your head!

As we love a great collaboration, we will then gather all the questions and create a video answering them for you!

Don’t by shy and write it in the comments or you can also send us a DM!

For the last 5 years (2020 onwards), I have been collaboring with an amazing selection of dancers, poets, photographers, cinematographers, fine artists and musicians to think through and explore rhythms and their disruption. It has been a labour of love. Over the next two weeks we are doing a number of shows. Come if you can. It is going to be amazing.

Disrupted Rhythms is a collaborative multimedia project suited to an era of disrupted rhythms, economic crises, pandemics, social upheavals and global political uncertainty.  Disrupted Rhythms is a poetic phenomenological investigation into this sense of disruption.

Since 2020, a group of musicians, dancers, essayists, filmmakers, fine artists and photographers began a collaborative venture to explore the nature of rhythms, and their disruption, by creating a series of dance inspired happenings, and documenting them via film, photography and essays.

Tonight, they will be bringing all aspects of this project together: Film, photography, live performance, and a live improvised score. Expect a multisensory, multimedia event involving live dancing, live drawing, live violin, and projected film.

Finally I can talk about this!

A new project with texts by Chris Kelso, recited by Elle Nash, Timothy Jarvis, Brian Evenson, Graham Rae and Stuart Dahlquist.

Music by me, Stuart, Christopher Manning, Lizzy Carey, Kianna Blue and a Tbilisi choir.

Mastered by Toby Driver.

To be released on vinyl on Merrigold records with artwork by Carmen Palth and Edging On Death.

Some of you in Tbilisi may have heard early versions of this when I got buried alive onstage at Junkyard.

Hugely excited for this release. It’s the first in a projected series of Vantablack pieces too.

How is your bank holiday weekend going? 🐣

We have been diving into the “Anthology of Black Humour” by André Breton and preparing the presentation for tomorrow’s Exploding Appendix session.

👀Here’s a short extract:

‘It is now time,’ says Freud, ‘to acquaint ourselves with some of the characteristics of humour. Like wit and the comic, humour has in it a liberating element. But it has also something fine and elevating, which is lacking in the other two ways of deriving pleasure from intellectual activity. Obviously, what is fine about it is the triumph of narcissism, the ego’s victorious assertion of its own invulnerability. It refuses to be hurt by the arrows of reality or to be compelled to suffer. It insists that it is impervious to wounds dealt by the outside world, in fact, that these are merely occasions for affording it pleasure.’ Freud gives this common, but adequate, example: the condemned man being led to the gallows on a Monday who observes, ‘What a way to start the week!’

This is the perfect topic after coming back from holidays! We will have a good laugh! 😆

🥸 See you tomorrow 🥸

Our first session of 2024 is here!

We invited Rachel Stenner for this interactive conversation where we will explore interplay between the printing press and literary works. Drawing upon her concept of the Typographical Imaginary we will explore how writers imaginatively and self-consciously explored the materiality of the book.

Her innovative perspective highlights the way writers during the late medieval and early modern periods utilised imaginative portrayals of the print trade to dissect their evolving media landscape and comment upon it.

Happy New Year 2024!

We have a great year ahead filled with more talks, workshops, performances and shows! We started the year reflecting on our values and how we want to approach this new chapter.

This year we will be approaching our online community from an encyclopaedic point of view, bringing a set of different fragments into a unified totality. We will be introducing new elements and literally revisiting old encyclopaedias and dictionaries, like the one in this post, and appendixes.

Is there something you are curious about that you would like us to explore? Let us know in the comments.

The next Exploding Appendix session will now be on Clausewitz for Artists.
*The Typographic Imaginary In Early Modern English Literature: A Live Conversation with Rachel Stenner had to be rescheduled for next year's programme.

What can artists learn from military theory? How can strategic thinking inform socially engaged art? How can we transform strategy into an artistic practice?

Drawing specifically on Carl von Clausewitz's classic theory of Napoleonic warfare, On War, we will explore what military theory can teach us about artistic practice. In this session, we will...

●Summarise the Clausewitz's On War.
●Explore how military theory has influenced art history, especially the history of avant-garde art.
●Explore how the ideas might be deployed in relation to socially engaged art.
●Explore how we might apply this to our own art practice.

Join us for free online or in person at Southern Belle, 3, Waterloo Street, Hove.
Door open at 7 pm - Session starts at 7:30 pm until 10 pm

Manifesto Workshop for Creative Industries and Social Enterprises

The session will be run in conjunction with Defending Arts and Culture in Brighton, which was set up in response to the many cuts and crises facing arts, education, and culture in this city. One of our aims is to create a repository of all the different manifestos for the city of Brighton and Hove. This will help us understand people’s key demands for Brighton as a cultural space. We see the manifesto workshop as a step towards this, and we welcome people submitting their manifestos to this collection.

UPCOMING EVENT 📅

Join us as we dive into the paradoxes of s*x and its puzzling ambiguities.

Classical logicians tell us that a double-negative is a positive, yet in the intricate realm of our daily lives, clarity often eludes us. On this night full of contractions, we will explore an act of s*x that is not s*x, but also not not s*x, which means that it is s*x, but it is also not s*x at the same time - sort of.
