Solo sailors' taster for great challenge ahead
The Golden Globe Feeder Race to France set off from Falmouth - to Les Sables d'Olonne yesterday, waved on by around 200 support vessels, and crowds on Pendennis Point. They were started by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston firing his canon aboard Suhaili anchored at one end of the line – with Gypsy Moth IV at the other. From Les Sables they will follow in Sir Robin's wake, sailing around the world starting on July 1, as he did in 1968/9. The fleet arrived in Falmouth last Thursday and it was special to many of the 18 competitors to be in Falmouth with RKJ and Suhaili there alongside - thanks to 3deep Aerial and Heidi Frith for these clips.
Golden Globe Race sailors – Falmouth to France
The Golden Globe Race to France set off from Falmouth - to Les Sables d'Olonne (from where they will follow in the wake of Suhaili and Robin Knox-Johnston sailing around the world starting on July 1) - thanks to 3deep Aerial and Heidi Frith for these clips - Sir Robin sailed off after the fleet after anchoring at one end of their start line and firing his canon to mark the start. The other end of the line was marked by Gypsy Moth IV.
Sir Robin Knox-Johnston receives his steak at the Golden Globe press conference in the Chain Locker pub in Falmouth, at lunchtime today. “I was desperate for a steak because I wanted something to chew,” said the famous solo circumnavigator, and Golden Globe winner, referring to his return to this very spot in 1969 after sailing for 312 days in Suhaili on a diet of dried and tinned food. After the steak RKJ was given lemon meringue pie - the same pudding he’d ordered after his landfall.
This afternoon he will sign copies of his new book at the Falmouth Bookseller before coming back to the Chain Locker at 6pm for a Suhaili evening in the bar.
Tomorrow the gathered fleet of 18 solo sailors will sail around Falmouth harbour from 10am before they start their race to Les Sables d’Olonne at 1pm. From there they have a chance to finish their preparations before the race around the globe south of the great capes begins on July 1.

Hove Harbour Fire
This is how our local harbour looked this morning... At the West End of Shoreham Harbour in Hove the building/timber supplies warehouse of Chandlers caught fire this morning shortly after 8.00am. A dense plume of smoke spread out over Hove on the SSE breeze. One building collapsed at around 11am. The fire was still alight at 2pm. Ten appliances including two ladders attended the scene; nobody was hurt.

Meet Simon Cooper one of those extraordinary people who canoe and bicycle to out of the way places. Simon is pioneering the use of natural curing (UV) resins using them to dope the flax cloth that forms the skin of his craft. We featured him in our May issue in a piece called "Growing his own boat"!

MCA footage of Tynemouth's longest shout 110 miles from the coast. The 60ft former Danish fishing vessel LOUISE THOMSEN departed Thyboren on Sunday bound for Sunderland with one person on board. On passage the skipper has encountered some minor problems with water ingress and mechanical difficulties and has been assisted by standby vessels at the Siri and Valhalla oilfields and Coastguard Rescue Helicopter with pumps and repairs. Footage shows the Tynemouth Lifeboat establishing tow and then towing vessel to port - around trip of 220 miles.
