It was an absolute please to be invited to the opening night of the Lytham Anonymous Players production of the 40th anniversary of “Stepping Out”. An award-winning comedy play by Richard Harris.

The most well-known iteration of this story is the incredibly star studded 1991 film adaptation which earned Julie Walters a BAFTA nomination. But this production, directed by Anthony Stone is true to the 1984 play, with a few modern-day updates.

Set in a northern town’s church hall, we meet a wonderfully colourful group of characters at a weekly dance class, finding out they have charity gala night to perform at. We witness how life and dance develop leading up to it.

Each member of the cast brilliantly breathed life into their character. 9 ladies and 1 Man, every single one of them displayed their characters quirks, moods, brains, talent and body! Which made this such a pleasure to watch. Each line was delivered in such a natural way that it started to feel like I had crept up and peered into the church hall through the window. From the over worked Maxine, nervously shy Andy, wonderfully naïve Lynn, brassy and bold Sylvia, big mother hen Rose, dotty but smart Dorothy, bossy and clean Vera, brilliantly witty Mrs Fraser, dancer extraordinaire Mavis and of course the one man, as Maxine puts it…Geoffrey, Geoffrey, Geoffrey, This cast of characters acts at every opportunity. Spending almost the whole time on stage they never stopped, even when the ‘camera wasn’t on them’ so to speak.

The costumes and costume changes, which happened incredibly quickly and smoothly during blackouts on stage, were executed well and really kept you in the moment. Those modern-day updates, va**ng of course, and a few line changes which had the audience laughing a few times.

It would be very difficult to pick out any members of this cast because every person had such a part to play in bringing it together, however, a special mention should be paid to Sarah Jane Stone who not only took the role of Mavis the dance teacher but also the role of choreographer and sang twice during the performance!

The addition of a celebrity feature guest was a fun idea and we were treated to a little bit of stand up from Cheryl Ferguson before she introduced the grand finale. On Thursday this will be Steve Royal and on Friday Hayley Kay.

The whole company should be very proud of their opening night, they thoroughly deserved the standing ovation and rapturous applause they received.

Tonight I was very fortunate to be invited along to see the brilliant Cre8iv Kids takeover the Cre8iv Little Theatre.

It was wonderful to have a few of them on the show a few weeks ago teasing us about what a show it would be but they were terribly modest!

It was fantastic! From the planning to the performance the kids really did do it all. It is too difficult to pick out any single performance because every performer showed their whole talent and personality so well.

A personal highlight for me, however, and special mention should go to Armenia who, as MC, wrote her own script and knit the whole show together like a professional.

The future of theatre is safe if this is the standards, commitment and most importantly passion that young artists have.

I URGE anyone who enjoys musical theatre or live entertainment to seek out their next performance of We Will Rock You (27th June -29th June)

I will be interviewing a few of the cast on Tuesday 18th on DriveTime.

Until then…these kids..they did themselves, their parents and Cre8iv Proud!
