First shot fired in WW1- today in 1914.
The first shot fired by a soldier in a British uniform rang out on 7 August in West Africa. A reminder of the global and imperial nature of the First World War. The terrible fighting in France and Belgium became infamous but there were campaigns in Africa, Asia and across the world’s oceans.

The oldest large scale statues of humans ever found.
A collection of 20 of these plaster and reed statues were recovered during a road building project in Jordan in the 1980s. Hauntingly beautiful.
One of the most important ancient graves ever found.
This man, known as the Amesbury Archer, was discovered during the building of a school near Stonehenge. His grave contains the earliest gold items ever found in Britain alongside copper knives. His are among the first Bronze Age human remains ever found in Britain, making him a representative of the huge transition from an age of stone to an age of metal.
Today in 1545 while leading an attack on a squadron of French galleys in the Solent, Henry VIII’s powerful warship Mary Rose capsized.
