So this is an incredibly difficult post to write but unfortunately we have to announce the sad passing of our founder and editor Andrew Palmer. Football Masters Magazine was Andrews passion and his knowledge of retro football was outstanding. He will be sorely missed by all. This magazine serves as his legacy.

If any of you have met Andrew in real life you will know what a kind, compassionate man he was, we are all truly heartbroken.

If anyone would like to pass on any wishes to his family feel free to send a direct message to us or post to this page.

All the best for now.

Football On This Day – 29th July 1966
Tomorrow England will play West Germany in the World Cup final, If there had been football coupons 55 years ago, these would have been the mythical odds for the match:
England to become the first host nation to lift the Jules Rimet Trophy in 32 years, went into the match as the 4/5 favourites. Helmut Haller would have been 13/1 to be first goalscorer and 7/2 to score at anytime. Half-time score (1-1) would have been 5/1. 2-2 at full time would have been an inviting 39/1.

Football On This Day – 23rd July 1966
Geoff Hurst replaced the injured Jimmy Greaves in the England side for the World Cup quarter-final against Argentina at Wembley – and scored the only goal. The Argentine captain Antonio Rattín was sent off and England manager Alf Ramsey refused to allow his players to exchange shirts with their opponents at the end of the match, later calling the Argentines ‘animals’.

Football On This Day – 14th July 1969
The short-lived ‘football war’ started when the El Salvador army attacked Honduras two weeks after the two countries had played a bad-tempered play off match to decide who would progress to the 1970 World Cup Finals in Mexico. El Savador had won the football match and were winning the war until a cease-fire was called.

The Football War will be featured in Issue 7 coming soon
