2023 you've been amazing! Huge thanks to everyone who's trusted me with their music this year, this is my dream job and you make it a reality. 🙌

I've made some BIG changes this year, with plenty more planned for next. My focus is squarely on creating the highest standards in audio and providing a bespoke service that embraces a modern approach.

2024 will be my 14th year working independently as a music professional and I'm already excited to get started! 🥳👍

Back To Basics. 🙉

It's taken me ages to test different monitoring setups and eventually decide on this spectacular Kii Three BXT reference system, in an unnecessarily fancy Iced Bronze Metalic finish. 😀👍

Are these the best mastering monitors available at the moment? For my style and room, they're like nothing else I've heard! They are truly spectacular!

On The Hunt... 🏹

I'm always on the hunt for that extra 1%. It's rare that a new plugin or bit of kit makes it into my limited toolbox.

To say that I've been underwhelmed by 'some' analogue emulations would be an understatement, especially for Sontec attempts.

Could the search for a decent software Sontec be over? It certainly looks that way. It's not a surprise that this emulation by is licenced and endorsed by Sontec as it sounds great (so far).

I say this a week into the demo. I'll be running the full 30-day trial, and ONLY if I'm still reaching for it on a daily basis will I purchase.

I'd encourage everyone utilising plugins to really think carefully if they need it, or just want it on an impulse. And ALWAYS use the full trial periods before purchasing. 😀👍

In other news... my dog likes peanut butter. Time management and productivity are big on the agenda for this month! 🐶⌚️

It's about the ear. 👂 not the gear. ⚙️

Around the interweb, there's a bit of a weird focus on gear, especially in mastering.

My focus has always been on listening.

Anything that can help improve this, monitoring, conversion, acoustics, ear training etc. is going to have way more impact on what I can deliver in the studio over any 'magic box' or 'gamechanger plugin'.

After all, it's only when you can confidently hear what's happening that you can accurately understand what your tools are really doing to the music. 😀👍

I can't believe it's nearly 14 years since I decided to go independent as a full-time engineer.

Many things have changed... one thing remains constant, and that's the appreciation I have for all of the wonderful clients who place their trust in me to handle their music.

There are so many useful applications for AI technology, even in music, and these mainly lean towards repetitive tasks and data crunching. The second human creativity and emotions are involved, this tech falls flatter than a steamrolled pineapple pizza.
