Happy (belated) World Curlew Day! Always a little late to these things. Today is Earth Day. Still, some appreciation for these wonderful waders facing huge challenges is never amiss. Here is to the Curlews and to all the charities such as Curlew Action doing their most to raise awareness.

The #Underwater sounds of a sea loch in Scotland.
The popcorn popping sounds you hear (especially towards the end of the video) I have been told are made by Pistol shrimp - a cool looking crustacean with a Poppeye-sized arm capable of stunning their pray by blasting them with a shockwave.
I remain however not convinced as the main thing my eyes can see in the water are seaweeds Egg wracks and Bladder wracks, the yellow and brown seaweeds with air pockets. It would seem logical that when these air pockets are mature enough they pop under the water’s pressure.
More investigation needed - if anyone has any suggestions i’d love to hear them!

A little ASMR (Autonomous sensory meridian response) for your senses. Five minutes underwater with young brown trout, patrolling the lower waters of the Cladagh river in County Fermanagh. Filmed during the spawning season (though no spawning behaviour was recorded).
The river Cladagh, like the Arney, the Erne and other local streams, used to be brimming with trout and salmon. Their decline in numbers is due to several factors; the intensification of farming (transition from hay making to silage, spread of chemical fertilisers and slurry, and consequent runoffs), the hydroelectric dams built in the 1950s in Belleek and Ballyshannon, and the UDN disease outbreak of the 70s and 80s, being amongst some of the main causes.
The Cladagh river is one of the key sites where local community groups, with the help of scientists from Queen University Belfast, have been collecting brood trout in an attempt to breed and restock levels of Erne trout.
Species: Brown Trout (Salmo trutta)
Date and time of recording: 25 January 2022, 1pm
Location: Cladagh river, County Fermanagh, Ireland
Habitat: River
Gear: GoPro Hero 7, Aquarian Audio H2A hydrophones

FIELD RECORDING - Sounds of the EUROPEAN STARLING
Sturnus vulgaris perching on a power line in the Arney river catchment stretching Counties Leitrim, Cavan and Fermanagh in Ireland. The final part of the video showcases sounds recorded at a roosting site - listen out for clear bird mimicry, including that of waders such as Curlew and Lapwing, which are now a rare sound in the Arney catchment.
