Why you might not hear your request played…

We often get requests as DJ’s, and some may be more polite than others when it comes to dealing with requests. Personally, I try to be upfront if I’m not going to play a request, because it’s unfair to keep someone waiting if it doesn’t fit the vibe…however, if it’s a track that I feel I could play, but doesn’t currently suit the flow / tempo / crowd demographic then I’ll simply say ‘leave it with me…’🪩👌🏻

I’ll have every intention of squeezing it in, however the likelihood of me doing that will reduce every time you hound me for it, or stare at me…I am a professional, and I’m courteous at all times when I’m hosting and I expect the same in return…🥰

So, will your DJ play your request? Probably, providing you’ve asked respectfully, and not two songs after the genre your request fitted has just finished. The swiftest way to get your request played is to ask the host/s if the party to ask for it, and you’ll have to remember that we’ve put lots of effort into curating the set list with the couple, or party host and if we play a track that’s miles away from that, then we are not doing what we committed to…and if you ask for an obscure 80’s New Wave track when most of the crowd were born in the 90’s, please trust that if we can squeeze it in, we will…🙏🏻

First and foremost, my role is to represent the wishes of the party hosts, honouring their selections, whilst adding a few of my own to compliment their choices, and trust me when I say that I’ve discussed (at length most of the time) the importance of having a varied set list to suit a range of ages and tastes. 🎶🎶🎶

Also, if you buy me a drink, that might improve your chances of your request being played! 🍻😉

Last night we hosted a Thai wedding (with secret gender reveal! 💙🩷) and what a night it turned out to be…unfamiliar music selections meant more vigorous preparation and wow, did it pay off! Such a lovely and appreciative crowd, every song was a hit (even if we didn’t know the words!) and a great B&G! Another comfort zone well and truly completed!

I read an article this morning, relating to a global ‘do not play’ list and multiple wedding bloggers advising what songs to NOT have played at your wedding or event:

‘….it would be terrible if you played this song at your wedding…’

Ignore that ‘advice’; it’s your event, your wedding, your big day…so if you want to hear a few cheesy 80’s classics, some forgotten 70’s rock anthems, a little techno or drum & bass, Cotton Eye Joe, or the Cha Cha Slide, then put it on your list…as your DJ, I would scour that list and offer up any advice but ultimately, we are here to represent you through the medium of music. 🎶🎶🎶

We will know what order to play your selections, tracks to add in that will compliment your choices and any adjustments needed to keep the vibe going…

We are with you every step of the way with the intent of taking the stress out of one of the key elements of your wedding or event…so if you want a little bit of something that doesn’t ‘fit the norm’, we are here for it! 🥳

Let’s talk for a moment about value for money…

If you, or someone you know is planning to get married this year or next year, please take the time to read through this post:

When selecting vendors for your big day, what are your key factors in ensuring that you get value for money…is it worth spending that little bit more to have a day to remember?

There are so many things consider when selecting the ‘supplier team’ for your wedding; budget, location, style, capacity, among other factors…

Talking specifically about the entertainment for your celebration, consideration needs to be given to experience, knowledge, suitability to your decor and musical preferences…when selecting a DJ, you firstly need to ensure that you know exactly what you want so that you can communicate that vision (or indirectly through your planner), or at least communicate openly with your DJ to get some ideas of what has worked at their previous events.

If you send your DJ a playlist, and you only hear a few tracks from it, or if your DJ doesn’t provide feedback or queries to your playlist of it is a little too specific then you are not getting value for money.

If your musical tastes differ a little from the norm, that’s great, and we will work with you to make sure you’re represented in your selections, it’s your big day after all! We would also suggest that there are other genres featured for your guests that perhaps do not share your musical tastes…

What should your DJ be offering you for their fee:

1. Clear communication from introduction to post wedding. This could be a meeting (in person or virtual), emails or even calls/texts. 📞📧

2. They should request a playlist of 20-50 songs that are a ‘must play’, and subsequent feedback, advice or queries. Your DJ should legally download these tracks and spend time putting them in an order that suits your event timeline. 🎶🪩

3. An idea of the setup (speakers, lights, booth etc) they will be using at your wedding, including any extras that are chargeable. 🪩💃🏼🕺🏻

4. Some form of contract, this can be formal or informal, however as long as you know exactly what you are buying at the fixed cost including any available extras (hourly rate past midnight, additional fees for ceremony attendance etc) exact timings, what you can expect, and your DJ expects of you (and your guests).

5. They should have all relevant compliance documentation (public liability insurance, PAT test certificates etc).

6. They should also have testimonials and reviews from previous weddings and events, and if these are not offered, you are within your rights to ask for them.

7. They should liaise with, and if at all possible visit the venue prior to the event to review logistics and constraints (timings, available space etc).
