Mastering is so much more than slapping a few plugins on the mixbus and call it a day. And it’s definitely a lot more than putting your mix through an online mastering tool.

Analog mastering is a great way to bring life, depth and energy to a static and flat sounding in-the-box mix. Even without using any EQ or compression settings, just letting the mix pass trough the electrical circuit of tubes, transistors and transformers can be a massive difference compared to the zeros and ones of digital computing.

Producer, engineer and owner of Obsidian Mastering, Laurens van Oers, has installed a pair of PMC 6-2 monitors in his studio in Eindhoven. The devil is in the details…

Send your mix over and I’ll provide you with free mix advice. See it as a second opinion. I hear your track for the first time on high-end monitors and immediately notice things that catch my attention. It can be about the frequency spectrum, stereo image and mono compatibility, overall balance between elements etc. but sometimes it can be more subtle like unwanted artifacts, noise, clicks, pops or background noise. The feedback provided is a opportunity for you to learn, while improving the mix before mastering will eventually deliver an even better and more satisfying end result.

Analog ✅

Although analog mixing and mastering isn’t always more expensive, it can be. The reason is that analog mastering takes more time and effort than digital. This is due to the expense of printing/recording every track and because of revisions, as recalling a session needs to be done manually, via accurately documented settings, and recalibrating the correct settings.

Regardless of price, analog mastering often sounds better than its digital counterpart. This is due to a few different things.

Why does analog often sound better?
* The equipment used affects the signal in a uniquely analog manner
* Analog mastering adds some needed harmonic distortion to a clean digital recording
* The mastering engineer is often more experienced

LIMITING

Every track needs to be as loud as possible right? So let’s slap on that limiter and push it until it hurts (audible distortion/clipping).

WRONG!

I often don’t even use the limiter at all. I like to preserve the dynamic characteristics of the mix, especially when mastering jazz, funk, pop, rock, indie etc.

Why go analog?

Running tracks through analog equipment can create an extra level of dimension to music.

Although many digital emulations sound great and offer an easy way to quickly add harmonic generation, analog mastering still offers the harmonic complexity that digital is currently incapable of offering.

The components inside analog equipment such as transformers, active gain stages, op-amps, and tubes can add unique characteristics of saturation and distortion that make your mix sound more 3D, more warm, more balanced, glued together and with a thicker low-end.

It’s incredible to hear certain elements come forward and become more audible, more exciting, and better balanced by adding analog saturation.
