On the 1st March we released the wonderful cultural connecting release by Joan Bibiloni, Jim, Rhys Ifans and Pep Tosar to celebrate the cultures of Wales and the Balearic Islands and we got some great coverage in the Mallorca Dario newspaper. This is a release that is very special to us here at NuNorthern Soul and one that will be remembered for many years to come, we even had a request for a copy for the Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru | The National Library of Wales

Gareth David Potter, Welsh cultural commentator and creative consultant on the Cofio Recorda Remembrance project unboxes some of the finished copies.

In the enchanting realm where music and poetry intertwine, the forthcoming vinyl release by NuNorthern Soul promises to be a transcendent journey through time, memory, and the boundless reaches of human experience. At the heart of this captivating endeavour lies the revered Welsh poet known simply as Waldo—a diminutive figure whose literary legacy casts a towering shadow over the landscape of Welsh literature. Waldo's mystical prose, deeply rooted in pacifist convictions that once led him to prison, has long conveyed the essence of civilisation to the people of Wales. 'Cofio,' one of his cherished poems from 1936, explores the profound intersections of time, memory, and the ineffable elements that elude the grasp of recollection. This poignant adaptation, a collaboration between the Balearic islands' musical maestro Joan Bibiloni and the eloquent recitations of 'Cofio' by actor Rhys Ifans with additional arrangement by Jim aka James Baron [Crazy P] and renowned Catalan Spanish actor Pep Tosar, is a timely homage to Waldo Williams.

Released 1st March to celebrate St. Davids Day & Día de les Illes Balears (Day of the Balearic Islands).

Phil Cooper welcomes Turkish musician Zeynep Erbay to the NuNorthern Soul roster with the arrestingly beautiful Healer. Listening to the record, it’ll come as no surprise to learn that Zeynep spent many years studying at a classical musical conservatory. Her elegant piano playing colours everything on the E.P. She also did a stint at the Red Bull Music Academy, and has previously released music on Compost and Soul Clap. The story behind the music concerns a whale’s emotional search for her lost family. Her sense of longing, and hopelessness, balanced by hopefulness vibrates within the arrangements. Phil brings onboard two remixers to amp up the vibes, but it’s Marshall Watson’s mix that`s the winner for me. His version of Healer Whale blending dubby disco and Nu Balearic to stunning effect. 8/10

Zeynep Erbay, a classically trained pianist who took a turn towards the dance-floor while at university, the Turkish DJ/producer earned her first release on Compost Records way back in 2007 after taking part in the 2006 edition of the Red Bull Music Academy programme. Since then, her career has been on an upwards trajectory, with releases on Fools Gold and Soul Clap Records confirming Erbay as a genuine rising star of underground electronic music.

On the Healer EP, the Istanbul-based producer showcases the more atmospheric, sun-kissed end of her productions, taking a turn away from synth-powered, disco-leaning club tracks towards something more suitable for al-fresco events, sun-down sets, and sofa-bound listening sessions.

Inspired by a poem inscribed on the back cover of the EP, Erbay’s two original instrumental tracks simply ooze with emotion. The poem tells the story of a whale searching for her family while helping others along the way, which acts as a metaphor for our wider search for belonging and acceptance.
