Spotlight on Stan Getz: the lush, timeless sound of jazz’s cool school

Known for his velvety tone and effortless style, Stan Getz left an indelible mark on jazz, crafting a sound that could transform even the simplest melody into an unforgettable experience. From his early days with Woody Herman’s “Four Brothers” saxophone section to his iconic bossa nova collaborations with João Gilberto and Antônio Carlos Jobim, Getz’s artistry and emotive restraint shaped jazz’s cool school and set new standards for the tenor saxophone. His 1963 album, Getz/Gilberto, introduced the world to “The Girl from Ipanema,” becoming an instant classic that brought bossa nova into mainstream American music.

Getz’s evolution in jazz saw him embracing rock and fusion elements through the 1970s, only to return to acoustic jazz in the 1980s, much to the delight of purists. Through every genre he explored, Getz remained a singular, revered figure whose melodic creativity continues to inspire musicians and captivate listeners.

Born in 1928 in Tampa, Florida, Cannonball Adderley made an indelible mark on the jazz world. Early on, he played with Ray Charles in Florida before settling in Ft. Lauderdale as a band director. But it was his move to New York City in 1955 that truly launched his career, quickly gaining the attention of jazz icons. Collaborating with Miles Davis, Adderley played on monumental albums like Kind of Blue and Milestones, while also crafting timeless solo works such as Somethin’ Else and Know What I Mean?

Known for his explosive virtuosity and a tone that was both powerful and soulful, Cannonball’s alto sax playing was like none since Charlie Parker. His rich blend of jazz, soul, and blues left a legacy that continues to inspire musicians across genres.

Tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley stands as one of the defining artists of the Blue Note label, often overlooked despite his significant contribution to the hard bop movement. Critic Leonard Feather described Mobley as the “middleweight champion of the tenor saxophone”—his sound occupying a middle ground between the fiery intensity of John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins, and the softer, cooler tones of Stan Getz and Lester Young. Known for his smooth, rounded tone, Mobley’s music emphasized subtlety and sophistication, with intricate rhythmic lines delivered with precision.

A charter member of the Jazz Messengers, Mobley helped lay the foundation for hard bop—a style blending complex jazz improvisation with a soulful, earthy swing. His solo career flourished in the 1960s, producing landmark Blue Note albums such as Soul Station, No Room for Squares, and A Caddy for Daddy, which remain essential listening for hard bop enthusiasts.

SPACE IS THE PLACE…   Sun Ra invited us to imagine the impossible. Born Herman Poole Blount in 1914, Ra’s vision stretched far beyond Earth, weaving an “Astro-Black mythology” that linked ancient Egypt to the cosmos. After a supposed encounter with extraterrestrials in the 1930s, he was inspired to create music that transcended reality. His eclectic career, spanning over 100 albums, explored everything from chaotic space music to lush jazz standards, all while dressed in futuristic costumes and playing instruments with names like the “cosmic tone organ.”

Ra’s ideas went beyond sound; they urged listeners to see a future where humanity breaks free from its past traumas. He believed Earth’s struggles, particularly the history of slavery, had rendered life here untenable. Instead, he proposed a cosmic exodus “beyond the stars.” The Arkestra, his band of “tone scientists,” embraced this philosophy, creating an ever-evolving sound that moved from ragged improvisation to funk grooves, as heard on the newly reissued Lanquidity.

Sun Ra’s legacy remains relevant as we continue to rediscover his teachings and sounds, encouraging us to dream of a world yet to be realized.

In the late 1950s, Miles Davis didn’t just play jazz—he revolutionized it. Rising from the ranks to become a cultural icon, Miles transcended genres and generations, creating a string of groundbreaking recordings that forever changed the landscape of improvised music.
