A New Universe of Retailing...
Michelle Hespe (Retail correspondent, Publisher journalist and much more) and yours truly (Retail expert, previous winner and since 2010 Expert Juror Member of the Global innovation Award …) sat down for a talk about “A New Universe of Retailing”. Norway – Illums Bolighus, Oslo

Scandinavia ́s leading department store within design, lifestyle, fashion and home furnishings for the quality conscious customer, Illums Bolighus has the tagline which tells it all: The Royal Warrant: “By appointment to her majesty the Queen of Denmark.”

Illums Bolighus focuses on Scandinavian designer brands with input from world-known brands. The focus is on in-store customer experience, using specialists – designers and vendors are present in-store to meet customers and tell the story of their products. The first Illums Bolighus store in Norway opened in 2006 and now features five locations. It offers not just nice products and celebrated designers but also signature store events from wine courses and tastings to art exhibitions.

Uruguay – La Iberica, Montevideo

Established in 1892, La Iberica is located in the Historic Quartier of Montevideo – in a building built in 1850, featuring a lot of the original materials that give the store a special character. The 4-story, 1350 m2 store offers a curated selection of 5,000 home products from around the globe and by local artisans. Known as the tastemaker in Uruguay, La Iberica mixes tradition with state-of-the-art in a unique and timeless way.

The recipe for La Iberica’s 130 years of success in business is to combine a customer-oriented service with permanent innovation in products. They introduce in average at least 10 new products per month, carefully chosen with the criteria of timeless beauty, functionality, innovation and good quality.

Argentina – Tiendas Landmark, Martinez

The first "made in Argentina" department store chain, Tiendas Landmark offers anything for the home, featuring high-end quality and design. The retailer works with a store-within-a-store concept, where each brand has its own space, theme and atmosphere.

The new 6,000 square-meter (64 500 ft2) Tiendas Landmark store was designed to be an immersive experience that invites the customer touring – like in a small town – buildings, streets, a central “piazza.” There is a pathway to follow, set by architecture, and the fully set-staged store includes several artist interventions: a holographic entrance by Parratoro, murals painted by Martin Ron and elaborate wallpapers of Mercedes Costal.

A BIG shoutout to all the local editors of The Home- & Housewares magazines around the world for picking such great national winners in The Global Innovation Award competition 2023! It has been an absolute pleasure deep diving into the evaluations of the record-high 27 nominated stores from around-the-world.

Having studied the submitted papers, photos, videos, etc. and stopping by google, Facebook, and Instagram sites, I’m left with a strong belief, that The Store is Still King, and that there are so many ways to create a resilient, anti-fragile, and sustainable retail store.

The “beauty” of The Global Innovation Award, is that it is not a beauty contest - It’s about honouring the ability to rethink and reinvent retail, and how to create stores that customers want to visit over and over again. This is why a small single store can compete against big box store concepts (and win).

A store where people look forward to show up for work and is taken care of and feel like their role is recognized.

I can’t wait to meet the national winners. To have one-on-one coaching sessions with several of them, to give a lecture about best-in-class examples of innovation in retail, and last but not least, to honor the very best on the best on stage with a global recognition Saturday night at the “Oscar event at The Radisson Blu in Chicago.

Having won the award myself in 2007 and being part of the expert jury since 2009, I know how much work it takes to offer this setup, therefore a big heart warm thank you also goes to Derek Miller, Piritta Törrö, Tina Genualdi, and the rest of International Housewares Association for prioritizing to honor excellent retailing on a global scale.

Henrik Reisby gæstede i dag Roskilde Hovedbibliotek til Godmorgen Roskilde, hvor han i samtale med Roskilde TV's Annette W. Thuesen talte om byens handelsliv dengang, nu og ikke mindst i fremtiden, samt nyhedsforbrug og medievaner.

Reisby fortalte også med stor glæde og indlevelse om musik, bl.a. en rørende oplevelse med Paul McCarthy på Roskilde festival.

Da jeg drev Inspiration H.P. Nielsen dannede Formland i mange år rammen for de dage på året, hvor vi fandt ud af hvilke leverandører, der havde de rigtige produkter til den kommende sæson.
Det var og er fortsat vigtigt, at kunne se leverandørerne ved siden af hinanden, spore trends og blive introduceret til de historier, der gemmer sig bag produkterne. Foredragene gav også altid indspark og inspirerede til at skabe de bedste rammer for kundernes besøg i butikken.

And the "Oscar" goes to ...
A record of 33 stores received national recognition for being the most innovative store within their country. They were all invited to The Inspired Home show in Chicago to compete in The Global Innovation Award presented by the International Housewares Association.

Out of the 33 stores - five stores were selected as the best of the best. Congratulations to: Westwing - Casa & Decoração (Brazil), PAUL French Gallery (Argentina), Hengstyle 恆隆行(Taiwan), The Butler´s Pantry (USA), La Maison Pernoise - Concept Store (France)

We also selected a winner for the Martin M. Pegler Award for visual merchandising and displays HomeTown (India) and an award for the most innovative digital retail solution Make Designed Objects (Australia).
