A neighbourhood where hopelessness, drugs, alcohol, and fights are the everyday normal. Growing up in the local Roma community means you are destined to be just another misfit. However, the story of journalist Patrik Banga is strikingly different. It captures his life’s journey from the Roma quarter to becoming a journalist in the Czech media. In a raw and very open style it depicts the reality of a teenage boy who encounters rejection, criminalization, racism, and police brutality at an early age. And he’s looking for a real way out.

We are extremely proud to bring you the English edition of Alek Popov's novel "Mission: Turan. Census of the Ancient Bulgarians", translated by Traci Speed.

It is thanks to Péter Krasztev that we got to know Alek and his marvelous and funny novel. We had been working closely with Alek on the English edition up until his untimely death in March.
Since then everybody from translator to editor from publisher to former colleagues and friends have pulled all their effort together to make this edition worthy of Alek's memory.

“These new… ancient Bulgarians,” Slavyanski began hesitantly, still not clear on the terminology. “It seems to me that we should take steps to integrate them. This will have a positive impact on the demographic situation.”
“And on your ratings!” the professor added slyly. “Just think, thousands of new voters!”
“No, that’s not quite what I had in mind,” the president said, hurt. “I don’t look at people that way. For me, they’re human beings above all else.”
Yeah, sure you don’t, thought Dokuzanov. If you ask me, you don’t care about anything else. If only you did!

We at CEEOL Press are deeply saddened by the passing of our author, Alek Popov. In the last few months we have been working with him and a team of talented publishing professionals (translator, editor, designer) to bring out Mission Turan in English. He was involved in every step and was very happy how the book was shaping up. We will make sure to bring his wonderful book to readers all around the world. Rest in peace, Alek!

Alek Popov, one of Bulgaria's top writers, died today aged 58. He was the most clear voice of a new generation of Bulgaria post-Communist writers who did not shy from teasing the opportunism, laziness, hypocrisy, lack of morals and fake patriotism of modern-day Bulgarians. He was widely popular, mostly for his novel Mission London, one of the best satirical works this country has seen in the 21st century. His works were translated into several languages, including English.

Alek was a great friend of Vagabond and contributed to this journal since its inception.

He is survived by his wife.
