Special Mention of the 7th Berlin Revolution Film Festival – The Land That Rises and Descends by M***a Pennanen

Jury motivation: A Special Mention goes out to a film that takes us to an unknown place which is never resting and where the Super16 material shows us traditions that have their roots in urban myths. The film poetically and unobtrusively connects the moving of sea and land to the questions: What is the future and what is the past?

Jury motivation: A Special Mention goes out to a film where every breath, every word and everything else is as precisely as it can be. Approaching the topic of loss through sheep on a cemetery opens up a wonderful wondrous space in our heads which leaves a smile on our faces while thinking about our loved ones.

GRAND PRIX of the 7th Berlin Revolution Film Festival – Half Wet by Carlos Irijalba

Jury motivation: The film which is the winner of this year’s Berlin Revolution Film Festival shows us in a very unique, unagitated and non-panicky way how a dystopian scenario on a coast of this planet could look like. The beautifully composed images not only leave space to dive into our protagonist’s routine including his thoughts and questions, but leave us as viewers time to comprehend what is at stake: being Half Wet.

The pandemic has changed our relationship with the Alpine landscape, we have had nostalgia for it and we have rediscovered it, especially during the summer. The film is an invitation to marvel at the landscape and to reflect on our “mediated” relationship with Nature.

In this homage to Chris Marker's Sans Soleil, an unseen woman reads from the letters, postcards, and emails she's received over the years from a globe-trotting cameraman, her former lover and colleague. He shares footage with her from his more than three decades of filming around the world, reflecting on his experiences during this time of democratic instability, climate catastrophe, runaway technology and a global pandemic. Meanwhile, the woman is torn as to whether to reunite with him or not…

“Epitaph” is a photo-film about a murder of the woman by her ex-partner. It focuses on her inner journey before she dies and recalled memories of early life and relationship. She is living abroad far from her roots and culture which is also reflected in her last moments. Fears and longing are mixed together in memories with dreams of real and fictional people and places that she would never see again…

Visual artist Daniela Torres creates colorful ceramic dick sculptures inspired by the men who have been dicks to her. In this intimate artist portrait, Daniela shares her struggles, anger and catharsis as she creates a sculpture modeled after a series of unsolicited dick pics. She also shares her process with a diverse group of women who come together in one of her popular Berlin-based dick sculpting workshops. It’s a hands-on approach to healing that yields beautiful results.

The short documentary “Dicks That I Like” by the Berlin based director Johanna Gustin is scheduled for Saturday 21. October from 19:00 at Kino Moviemento, Kreuzberg, as part of the official selection of the 7th Berlin Revolution Film Festival. After the screening Johanna will discuss the details of her work during Q&A session.

„Terrain Vague“ is a 16mm photo-roman, based on the images and accompanying log of a fictional female researcher who, over the summer of 2016, chronicles the development of a new private university-based innovation center from the shell of a former coatings laboratory in a poor and working class Southwest Philadelphia neighborhood.

Through her investigation into the innovation center’s raison d’etre–and thus the history and geography surrounding it–the researcher reflects on the endless cycles of “creative destruction” that undergird this development, and the entrepreneurial science fictions and urban nostrums that fuel such cycles.

“The Fantastic” is a film about encountering the unknown and the relationship between imagination and reality. The film is built on interviews with exiled North Koreans, who describe what they imagined the outside world to be like, based on their experiences of watching smuggled western fiction films.

Alternating documentary footage and visual effects, the film raises the question of how reality is defined and what we wish to believe in. “The Fantastic“ reverses the set-up where westerners are peeping in on the everyday life of the closed-off state. In this film, it is the North Koreans who direct their curiosity at the outside world and imagine what life in Western countries is like.

“Where the Merrows Roam” is an entirely dialogue-free, experimental feature film following two separate stories across six distinct chapters. A nonlinear collage of reminiscences tracing the hazy glow of childhood memory through to the harsh light of adulthood.

The wolf no longer inhabits the land that once formed part of its territory, and only through its outlines can we get closer to it; remnants of wolf traps, predator urine imported from the US, a dung-hill used to feed scavenger birds and archers that shoot at replicas of animals. Reserve constructs a story about the fragile balance of a territory after the disappearance of the predator, where the complex co-existence between humans and non-humans presents a distinctly marked anthropogenic ecosystem.

“I took the role of Sweden's most annoying woman, someone absolutely no one wants to run into. Twerk for Yemen is my desperate attempt to draw attention to the forgotten war.”

A committed documentary filmmaker follows in the footsteps of the Swedish cult classic “I am Curious Yellow” and asks people in Stockholm what to do about the war in Yemen. The reactions she encounters and the answers she receives are at the same time deeply distressing and incredibly entertaining.

At a dystopian future moment in the coast of Oaxaca, due to global warming the oceans PH levels have acidified making them unsuitable for humans, therefore sea tourism has been gone for generations and only indigenous language is spoken. Wuicho repeats his father’s and grandfather’s ritual of keeping swimming pools pristine while he questions his actions and his predecessors.

The voices of five women gradually fill the sound space of the film, weaving a pattern: a tarot card reader who draws cards; a woman who survived one of the most horrific cases of kidnapping, sexual violence and homicide in Italy in the 1970s; a woman who is accused of the homicide of four people; a woman who suffers from depressive disorders; and a woman who has found her way in life through religious practice.
These voices deal, in different ways, with the relationship to life through the discourse of death.

The Land that Rises and Descends explores Finland’s forgotten backyard: the Kvarken Archipelago. Kvarken is a unique place on earth where the sea is the future land and the land was previously the sea. There myths as old as time form part of daily reality, and the rising and descending of the land poses questions about the archipelago’s future existence.
