Long the target of official harassment, the Hungarian Evangelical Fellowship seems poised to lose its remaining network of schools and social-care institutions. An October visit by the UN Special Rapporteur for religious freedom will surely ask why.

🇭🇺 | Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto called Croatia an “unreliable partner” as a row over oil transit escalates.

After Ukraine in June stopped allowing oil from Russian major Lukoil to transit its territory on its way to Hungary and Slovakia, the EU Commission suggested Hungary should instead turn to Croatia for more oil supplies.

Croatia has raised transit prices five times since the war started, Szijjarto complained.

PM Orban nominates controversial Oliver Varhelyi as Hungary's commissioner again. “During the past five years, Commissioner Varhelyi has proved that the EU can make a difference as a positive force in its neighbourhood and beyond. He will do an excellent job in the upcoming Commission!” Orban wrote on X.

But insiders say it its doubtful whether Varhelyi, who has been criticized over a number of issues, will be accepted by EU Commission President von der Leyen. Even more unlikely that the crucial enlargement and neighborhood portfolio, which has gained much more weight with the war in Ukraine, would be awarded to Hungary.
