HH Seeks to Promote Justice, Not Vengeance - PoZa Scope

It is praiseworthy enough that Zambia's new President, Mr Hakainde Hichilema held at least 12 meetings with a wide range of local and international stakeholders. All this was in a space of just four business days upon being declared president-elect, a clear indication of how ready and eager he is to serve his country.

However, what is really awe-inspiring is that among the first of these was a cordial meeting with his longtime rival, outgoing president Edgar Chagwa Lungu.

In view of the persecution Hichilema endured at the hands of Lungu, including 137 days in jail on flimsy charges, this was, no doubt, a felicitous demonstration of Hichilema’s willingness to promote peace. So far, his actions can be described as embodying the oneness that is so direly needed by Zambia and indeed Africa.

As briefly hinted in his acceptance speech, President Hichilema will not act out of vengeance and persecute those who persecuted him. He elucidated, nonetheless, that he will simply allow the law to take its course and let justice prevail.

Mr Hakainde S. Hichilema will be inaugurated as 7th President of the Republic of Zambia, today Tuesday, 24th August 2021 at Heroes Stadium in Lusaka, Zambia.

Zambia's 3rd President Dr Levy Patrick Mwanawasa Dies after being hospitalised for a stroke - 19th August 2008

Levy Patrick Mwanawasa was born as the second of 10 children on 3rd September 1948 in Mufulira, Copperbelt.

He attended high school at Chiwala Secondary in Ndola and studied law at the University of Zambia from 1970 to 1973.

Having served as solicitor general from 1985 to 1986 under Kenneth Kaunda, Mwanawasa soon became a key figure in the push for multiparty democracy.

Mwanawasa was widely tipped to become the president of the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) in 1991, but he declined, citing his young age and inexperience.

On 8th December 1991, Mwanawasa was involved in a serious traffic accident in which he suffered multiple body injuries and his aide died on the spot. The accident had a lasting effect on his speech.

Officials treated it as a possible assassination attempt.

When Frederick Chiluba won Zambia's first multiparty elections in 1991, Mwanawasa was appointed vice president but later quit the post citing the government's condoning of corruption, greed, and irresponsibility.

He served as the fourth vice president of Zambia from November 1991 to July 1994 whilst an elected Member of Parliament of Chifubu Constituency.

Chiluba later tapped Mwanawasa to be his successor. Mwanawasa won the presidency in 2001. Soon after taking office Mwanawasa turned on Chiluba, who was put on trial for corruption.

Mwanawasa had a reputation for integrity and won praise for his anti-corruption and economic modernization drive!

He curbed government spending and launched the biggest anti-corruption crackdown since Zambia won independence in 1964.

This endeared Mwanawasa to Western donors, and led to the 2005 cancellation of the country's external debt, putting Zambia back on a path to economic recovery.

In his time as president, Mwanawasa battled a growing public perception that his economic success had done little to tackle poverty.

Dr Levy Patrick Mwanawasa died at 59 on 19th August 2008, at the Percy Military Hospital in Paris, France nearly two months after suffering a stroke during an African Union Conference.

President George W. Bush hailed Mwanawasa, saying, "As Chairman of the Southern African Development Community, President Mwanawasa worked tirelessly to uphold the values of good governance, speaking out against human rights abuses and threats to democracy when many others were silent."

In her eulogy at the funeral, Maureen Mwanawasa said of her husband: "Typical of you, you died on duty. You died a sad man as no one seemed to appreciate your sacrifices."

The first speech of Zambia's president-elect, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema delivered on Monday 16th August 2021:

My fellow citizens,

It is with great honour, humility and gratitude that I stand before you today to say change is here. We have prevailed. Zambia has prevailed.

This victory does not belong to me, but to the men and women of Zambia. You came out in large numbers, with great energy and passion, and you sent a clear and resounding message that has reverberated around the world. It is time for change.

And through this message, you have tasked HH, Mutale Nalumango and the UPND Alliance with forming your next government and delivering this change.

I thank you for your support. I pray we will be worthy of your trust.
Brothers and sisters, it is indeed a new day in Zambia. A new beginning for us all.

With the election behind us, let us come together as Zambians. One Zambia. One Nation.

To those who voted for other candidates, we extend our hand, in friendship and respect. Though today you may be disappointed, I embrace you as your brother and as your servant.

I will be a President of all Zambians; president of those that voted for me and of those that did not. We will govern without fear or favour and without preference for any group over another. Indeed, the values of inclusivity, equality and diversity will be at the core of our administration.

Now is the time to move forward, beyond the partisanship of the election period towards a more prosperous and more united future. Let us put the past behind us, for it is what we do now, in the present, that will define our future.

To our competitors, we thank you for your participation in these elections. We are grateful for your gracious concessions, and for your acknowledgement of our victory. To you, we pledge to foster a better democracy where your voices and your democratic rights are freely exercised.

We invite you to work together with us, as we build a better Zambia, together.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank my running mate Ms. Mutale Nalumango, all the members of the UPND Alliance, our candidates, our campaign teams and well-wishers who worked tirelessly on the front lines and behind the scenes. We would not be here today without your hard work and dedication.

I thank my beloved wife Mutinta, who has always been by my side through thick and thin. You will make an incredible First Lady. To my children and the rest of my family, your love and enduring support has been a great source of strength.

I give thanks to our God Almighty, without whom this day would not be possible.

My fellow citizens, we have an enormous task ahead to revive our economy and deliver on your expectations. The journey will be tough and challenging, there will be ups and downs, but I am certain that with hard work and commitment, we will succeed in building a better life for you and your children.

Finally, let me thank again my masters, the people of Zambia, for the mandate you have given us to serve you.
We will not let you down.
God Bless you all.
And God Bless the Republic of Zambia.
