"The benefits of birding are available to everyone, because birds do not discriminate. Watching them is accessible to the elderly, the middle-aged, the young and the disabled. I cherish the peace and tranquillity of birding alone but I have met many birders of all ages and abilities and this hobby truly has the power to bring people from all walks of life, age and abilities together."

When the history books focus on only one kind of naturalist, they reinforce colonial power dynamics and erase the work done by Black, Indigenous and People of Color. Naturalism isn’t just a study of individual organisms, it requires deep understanding of entire ecosystems. Hazel M. Johnson, Haunani-Kay Trask and JoAnn Tall emphasized the connections between land, people, and water. Throughout their careers, they also promoted solidarity with other marginalized communitiesβ€”including other tribes and racial justice movements. Naturalism is most powerful when it examines the impact of systemsβ€”social and ecologicalβ€”and they did just that.

β€œThe lives of Hazel M. Johnson, Haunani-Kay Trask, and JoAnn Tall teach us that environmental justice starts with acknowledging the deep ties between land, water and people. You can’t claim to care about one and not the others.”

Calling all creatives! πŸ–‹οΈπŸ“

Join us on Tuesday, February 13th at 6:30pm for the first in a series of author panels being held at the Library this year. https://bit.ly/3RZxD6s

At Fireside Chats with Local Authors, we invite you to bring a friend and take part in an ongoing conversation about writing, storytelling, and the craft of spinning tales of adventure to share with readers.

How do writers manage to wrangle their big ideas onto the page and then, write enough pages to fill a book? Turns out, no two authors tackle the challenge in quite the same way.

For our first Fireside Chat, we are thrilled to welcome Jordan Bartlett, Katrina Rosen, and Helen Rolfe to the panel.

Visit our website to learn more about each of these incredible local authors.

Snacks will be provided. Books will be available for purchase.

Each event will also include a book exchange table. Bring a book you love (gently used or new) for the exchange table and leave with another to read!
