Last week First Choice Books owners attended the July Chamber of Commerce Business Mixer at Government House. This event was hosted by Janet Austin - Lieutenant Governor of BC and addressed by Victoria Chamber CEO Bruce Williams. It was a wonderful evening in the historic building with great food, stunning views and top company; this event was truly a highlight for the summer of 2023. Along with the First Choice Books owners, many local business leaders participated in this event and took the opportunity to socialize and make new business contacts.

The Emerging Local Authors Collection is an initiative developed by GVPL to celebrate Greater Victoria’s rich writing culture. To date, 1300 unique titles and over 900 authors have been showcased in this annual collection, with featured authors ranging in age from six to 90-plus.

First Choice Books proudly support this event because for us it is very important to empower people to tell their stories. In 2022 we were very pleased to see two of our authors featured as Emerging Local Authors on the GVPL website: David Knapp Fisher, the author of Punch Failure in the Face and Maria Skelly, the author of the Pilot Light Effect.

In its eighth year, GVPL's 2023 Emerging Local Authors Collection features self-published, independent, and small press books written by local authors and published between 2013 and 2022.

Last week, First Choice Books owners Melanie Perkins and Patrick O'Connor attended a Think Local First Business Mixer hosted by Prince of Whales in Victoria BC. It was wonderful afternoon with great weather on board their environmentally-friendly, custom-built catamaran, the Salish Sea Eclipse for the trip out to Race Rocks, where they viewed close-up harbour seals, stellar sea lions and the resident seagulls. Thanks again to the owners & crew of Prince of Whales for a great trip!
