Moqadas was working as a journalist in Afghanistan when the Taliban took control. With her life in danger, she had no choice but to leave her home country and look for safety elsewhere. She came to Canada as a refugee, and is now helping others who have experienced similar challenges.
.
Over the past few months, Georgia Street Media has had the privilege of working with Surrey Local Immigration Partnership on a series of videos called "Stories of Impact."
.
This project is a celebration of the diverse and vibrant stories of immigrants in Surrey, BC.
.
We've created five inspiring short films that delve into the stories of immigrants from India, the Middle East, Africa and South America. Each of them has a unique journey, but they all share the same spirit of resilience and hope.
.
We are so proud to be attending a public screening today - July 24 - at the Surrey City Centre Branch Library.
.
A huge thanks to the team at DiverseCity, especially the wonderful Tina Balachandran, who has been at my (Amanda's) side throughout this entire process, connecting, advising, cheering and sharing her own story with me. She has been incredible to work with, and has become a true friend.
.
And to our Storytellers - we are so grateful for your time, your openness and your optimism. I am humbled to learn from you and help you tell your stories of challenge and triumph.
.
We are excited to share the full stories as they become public. Thank you!
Some BTS of how we lit this interview shot!
Happy Earth Day!
.
We have been working with members of The Leq’á:mel First Nation and BC Hydro to create a video that shows the relationship the Nation’s members have with water.
.
Leq’á:mel is part of the Stó:lō Nation. Stó:lō means “People of the River.”
.
Located in Deroche, 22km east of Mission and 25km west of Agassiz, we traveled to Leq’á:mel multiple times to meet with council members and film with the community. We are so grateful for everyone who helped create this video and invited us onto the water.
.
This piece will be integrated into BC Hydro’s Power Smart for Schools educational resources for kindergarten to Grade Three students!
.
This video is voiced by council member Camielle Laslo - who is also featured in the video with her daughter. Camielle was a huge resource and help to us as we created this piece. Thank you Camielle!

Behind the Scenes - Future Global Leaders
Join us for a look behind the scenes as Amanda breaks down a project with her Co-Producer, Michael Dibblee!
.
Michael is the Director of Massif Creative, a branding and digital content agency, and a long-time GSM collaborator.
.
In the summer of 2023, GSM teamed up with Massif to create a series of videos to promote the Future Global Leaders (FGL) Program at the University of British Columbia.
.
💡 Together, we developed a creative that used a former FGL student as a host to guide viewers through what the program might look like. We spent two days filming with students on campus, and delivered 5 videos that focused on different benefits of the program.
.
👉🏻From the client: “We started promoting the summer program with the videos in mid-December and immediately thereafter we saw a spike in web visitors and engagement. We’ve had an amazing response thus far, and I’m sure it’s because of the amazing videos you’ve produced.
We’ve had an unprecedented rate of enrolment - never seen anything like it in the last 10 years!” 🤩
.
Amazing results and something we’re thrilled to hear after all the hard work we’ve put in!

Our team recently wrapped up a series of mini docs for Engineers and Geoscientists of BC. Each film focuses on an award winner and the contributions they have made to their profession.
.
Now, I’m no engineer - which is exactly why these videos - and each person in them - fascinate me! It’s an opportunity to learn from and be inspired by a completely different world of work.
.
Pia Abercromby - featured in this excerpt - won ‘The Young Professional Award,’ and graciously let us film her running through the forest many, many times 😄 She spoke about how she’s a “sustainability learner” - and doesn’t need all the right answers to start making a difference.
.
Her words really hit home for me: “Have a think about what you’re passionate about, and look for the opportunity to involve those things in what you do everyday. I think that’s been a breakthrough really for me, is having that belief in myself and realizing it’s ok not to know everything, but to still give it a go.”
.
Congratulations Pia! You inspire us!!

Leith Wheeler - Quiet Money
Some recent work for our friends at Leith Wheeler Investment Counsel - featuring a b-roll cameo of 11 year old Jordan Lee
Today it’s Jordan’s turn to share a little behind the scenes of his modular and speedy run and gun camera setup! The story always comes first when it comes to video, but gear is pretty fun too.
Behind-the-Scenes: The River Wall
Join GSM Owner, Producer and Director, Clayton Goodfellow, as he shares some behind-the-scenes from a special project!
.
The River Wall is an art installation at the Willowbrook Shopping Centre in Langley, BC, and GSM was hired to produce a video to be part of this permanent exhibit.
The purpose of the piece is to educate the public on the history, biology and geography of the Fraser River, and celebrate this integral part of our province.
Our team had the opportunity to highlight local businesses, residents and the Kwantlen First Nation, that work with, around and in the river.
.
When was the last time you explored The Fraser Valley? We highly recommend you do!
A little behind-the-scenes explanation about how our recent Wilson School of Design compilation piece came together!

Engineers and Geoscientists are literal superheroes. They build vital infrastructure, protect our towns from landslides, floods and cybercrimes, and are constantly looking to the future and better ways of doing.
The time we spent telling the stories of this years EGBC Award Winners was eye-opening.

May is Asian Heritage Month!
.
To celebrate, we are spotlighting a project we produced in partnership with the Office of the BC Human Rights Commissioner, featuring Brandon Yan.
.
Brandon is the Executive Director of Out on Screen, a BC film & education non-profit. In this piece, he shares his experience grappling with his identity as a queer man of mixed Chinese-White heritage - including the discrimination he has faced and the happiness he has found.
.
.
From the Government of Canada website:
Asian Heritage Month is an opportunity for us to learn more about the many achievements and contributions of Canadians of Asian heritage who, throughout our history, have done so much to make Canada the country we know and love.
The theme for Asian Heritage Month 2022 is, “Continuing a legacy of greatness”.
This month is a reminder for all Canadians to come together to combat anti-Asian racism and discrimination in all its forms.
